We do this by having a positive influence on youth in our communities by supporting innovative education, youth entrepreneurship, and leadership.

We exist to help every child become all they were created to be.

Stories inspire. They contain the evidence of hard work and the outcome of a curious mind, and daring heart. Often I think of my father’s story, his humble beginnings, and find inspiration for another day, another idea, another initiative. He lived his story one day at a time. And now it possesses the power to effect change in the lives of others.

Hard work is contagious. People notice, and get inspired. In 2015, the Chick-fil-A® Foundation did the work. Our team dug in. Their aim?

To help every child become all they were created to be.

Our curiosity leads us to ask a question of possibility: “What if every child actually became all they were created to be?” It’s a question that leads to action; to make that mission a reality. And it’s inspiring to see the results from 2015. Please read and be inspired. But more than that, I invite you to become part of the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s story. A story of discovering solutions to real problems that confront our communities and nation.

We like to say the Chick-fil-A Foundation is not a charity, but leadership in action. Let’s stand together to be an inspiration to those in our community; let’s be willing to be engaged partners.

After reading these stories, decide how you might contribute to the call to transform lives. What good work will you do? What page of the story will you write?

An honor to serve at your side.

Curiously Inspired

Chairman, President, and CEO of Chick-fil-A, Inc.

Nestled on the Westside of Atlanta, the neighborhoods of Vine City and English Avenue are known by many names including their respective zip codes of 30314, and 30318. Over 60 percent of children under the age of 18 in this area live in poverty. One third of the homes stand vacant. These neighborhoods are some of the most violent neighborhoods in America today. The area struggles as these social ills prevent growth in the community. And yet these neighborhoods of Atlanta possess deep historical significance. They were an incubator for the civil rights movement and now are home to some of the nation’s most prestigious historically black colleges and universities. Due to years of disinvestment and poor management, the Westside needs revitalization.

It is no accident that our hope to shape the future of Atlanta begins here. “I have a very deep conviction about what this problem says about our society,” says Dan Cathy, “about what it says about our own backyard. This is happening on our watch. We have got to fix it.” Join us in imagining what could be. Imagine thriving neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. Imagine the Westside as a beacon of human flourishing where children are daily becoming all that they were created to be. In response to this glaring need, in 2014 the Atlanta Committee for Progress, along with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, established the “Westside Future Fund” (WFF). The fund operates as a convening mechanism. It creates a community framework that encourages collaboration with organizations such as PulteGroup, The Arthur A. Blank Family Foundation, Delta Air Lines, and The Home Depot. The Chick-fil-A Foundation joins these world-class organizations in a collective effort to change the trajectory of the Westside. Because of a deep commitment to the city of Atlanta and our neighbors, the Chick-fil-A Foundation desires to be part of the restoration of the Westside through financial contributions and partnering with other organizations through volunteering and continuing to be a humble presence in the area—listening to residents, understanding the complexity of the problems they face, and working with residents to solve them. Our heart for the Westside is shared by many other organizations we invest in such as: the City of Refuge, Peace Preparatory Academy, Bearings Bike Shop, Raising Expectations, Big Brothers Big Sisters, partnerships with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and others.

The Vine City and English Avenue neighborhoods represent where real needs require action. For those outside Atlanta, we ask you what is your Westside, the place in your community that needs the greatest attention? How can you address the immediate needs of your community? We can join hands now and work to make every community a place where every child gets the opportunity to become all they were created to be.

What is Junior Achievement (JA)? JA works with local businesses and organizations to deliver experiential programs on the topics of financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

The more important question, however, is: What impact does JA have upon our nation’s youth? Imagine all children understanding the connection between their education and their future career success. Imagine all children growing in financial wisdom and their love for entrepreneurship. Imagine inspired young people connecting the now of learning with the tomorrow of real cultural change. That’s what JA does.

Our vibrant partnership with JA continues to expand across the nation, and the collective effort from Chick-fil-A, Inc. and from Franchised Operators creates a powerful impact, nationwide.

At the Chick-fil-A Foundation, we believe in leadership through service. It’s in the DNA of our community, and it reflects the heart of our founder, Truett Cathy. In 2015, you could find Chick-fil-A Support Center staff serving in local community gardens, food banks, and schools. We’re about the work of imagining what can be in this world, and then doing the work to bring that potential to life.

True Inspiration Awards

Vice President of Community Affairs Executive Director of Chick-fil-A Foundation

RODNEY BULLARD

You and I can probably name at least one person who made a significant difference in our lives when we were young. My high school guidance counselor, Mrs. Gonzalez, encouraged me to go to the Air Force Academy. That advice changed the trajectory of my life. The power of one act of kindness, a helping hand, or thoughtful advice can work miracles in the lives of our youth.

That’s why I love what the Chick-fil-A Foundation is doing with the second annual True Inspiration Awards. The True Inspiration Awards recognize community organizations that align with the Chick-fil-A Foundation’s mission to support and inspire youth. In 2015, we awarded over $1 million in grants through the True Inspiration Awards to 25 organizations, nominated by Chick-fil-A Franchised Operators and community foundations across the nation. There are 22 organizations chosen for the 2016 True Inspiration Awards, to which we provided more than $1 Million in grants. Each award recipient has a mission that aligns with ours -- to help every child become all they were created to be -- devoted to innovative education, emerging leader development, or youth entrepreneurship.

The annual True Inspiration Awards Gala gives us the opportunity to honor these folks and their great work. It’s a special night of dinner, music, and inspirational testimonials. This year’s Gala featured Grammy Awards® winner and musician Lecrae, who hosted the event. In his opening remarks, Lecrae described his own upbringing. He is the first family member to make it out of public housing. Lecrae attributed his own success to organizations like the ones represented at the Gala that exist to help every child reach their full potential.

At the event, we presented an award to each organization, a trophy designed to physically represent “the flame within.” This flame represents the generous spirit that flowed through our founder, Truett Cathy’s heart. The True Inspiration Award Winners represent that spirit, and carry it on into the next generation of great leaders. It was a pleasure to celebrate them and their accomplishments.

S. Truett Cathy Honoree

A Night to Remember Prom

The legacy of Truett and Jeannette Cathy is one of inspiration and caring for the next generation. Early in their relationship, Jeannette and Truett worked as a team in Truett’s entrepreneurial endeavors. Their vision and faith flourished, allowing them to parlay their business success into widespread philanthropic efforts focused on helping young people reach their full potential. The S. Truett Cathy Honoree embodies this entrepreneurial spirit of vision and service, and in 2016 we are pleased to honor A Night to Remember Prom, nominated by Chick-fil-A Franchised Operator Mandy Medlin.

“Young people are inspired by having opportunities to put action behind their words. They want to be ‘doers.’ The pure joy and excitement of A Night to Remember Prom has led to hundreds of student hosts jumping on board.”

Cheryl Shields, Founder & Director, A Night to Remember Prom

True Inspiration Awards

The founders, Rob and Cheryl Shields, dreamed up an annual prom for high schools in San Diego. Their desire is to love and honor students with special needs, and build community with “mainstream” students—exactly what they accomplish through A Night to Remember. They say, “On prom night, dancing and fun knows no disability.” Student volunteers are paired one-on-one with a new friend with special needs for this prom night, through which they break down barriers and build friendships.

Summer CampOver 1,000 kids experienced camp with the Chick-fil-A Foundation in 2015, hosted at colleges across the nation—Morehouse College, Georgia Institute of Technology, Wheaton College, and University of Washington.

One of our camp models, Fundamentals on the Field, is a one-day character curriculum that takes place on college campuses through partnerships with college football teams. We love this program because campers have the opportunity to visit a college campus, interact with student-athletes, and learn vital leadership skills.

Community Leadership Speaker SeriesInspiration demands movement. There must be a stirring of the mind, body, and soul. The rise of Ted Talks shows us how important and influential thought leaders are in every vocational field. Thought leaders help us see the potential of a good idea in action. They inspire vision for helping every child become all they were created to be.

In our ongoing effort to inspire the community and equip leaders, we sponsor the Community Leadership Speaker Series. The series hosts nationally known speakers to discuss issues facing the community, education, and youth. Hosted at the Chick-fil-A Support Center, these events are open to all Support Center staff, Chick-fil-A Operators, team members and external audiences. In 2015, we hosted over 1,000 attendees at six events, hearing from dynamic thought leaders on topics related to community development.

We believe that high school students are ready for action. That’s why we love supporting Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. The program involves 30 students per school in a seven-month curriculum where they learn valuable leadership lessons, culminating in an end-of-program Impact Project. This year, we awarded $72,250 in micro-grants towards 52 Impact Projects, supporting 1,500 students involved. It’s a lot of big numbers for a lot of students with big hearts. Partnering with Feeding Children Everywhere, the program accomplished a huge feat of preparing 1 million meals, sponsored by the Foundation.

Partnering with The Salvation Army and CBS Atlanta, the Chick-fil-A Foundation committed to sponsoring Angel Trees in six Simon Malls. Chick-fil-A Support Center staff got involved by investing their time to sort gifts in preparation for Christmas. Altogether, this partnership provided a special Christmas morning for more than 10,000 children, making their Christmas one to remember.

“Every child deserves to experience the joy of Christmas morning. Families who are struggling to meet the financial demands of day‑to‑day life question how they might provide a gift or two for their children on Christmas Day. The Angel Tree program provides relief to those parents while allowing generous donors to embrace the spirit of the season by giving.”

Chick-fil-A likes restaurant Grand Openings to be special events that not only offer fun and excitement, but real personal value for our guests. What if every child understood the value of reading? What if every Chick-fil-A guest at our Grand Openings was inspired to give toward that goal?

We partner with A Better Way Ministries to provide Chick-fil-A Franchised Operators with a “bookhouse,” used to collect children’s books from our guests during Grand Opening events. In 2015, we partnered with 93 Chick-fil-A Franchised Operators to collect and donate over 10,000 books to local organizations.

Meet the ChairmanMeet Ted Blum, Chairman of the Chick-fil-A Foundation Advisory Board. He has a passion for working with kids and believes we can change the world “one kid at a time, one opportunity at a time.” The bottom line for every initiative with the Foundation is its transformational impact on children. He gets excited about the diversity of programming the Foundation employs in order to reach kids in different locations, with different passions and talents. To Ted, this is key to transforming children’s lives and building community. We asked Ted what kind of legacy he hopes to leave behind through his involvement with the Foundation. Here are his thoughts:

“Our children have so many untapped talents that can be nurtured when we give them opportunities. The Foundation brings together kids fromt many different neighborhoods and communities to learn and experience new challenges, strengthen their identities, and develop their leadership potential. We are committed to helping our youth explore their passions, find their voices, and develop the skills necessary to make their way in the world. Working with the Foundation and seeing the impact we can all have when we work together has been incredibly enriching for me personally. I’m thankful to run the Atlanta office of a dynamic international law firm, and nothing makes me happier than to see how my business and all of our businesses can come together to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors.

“Every person matters. All of our children deserve the chance to learn, grow and improve their lives. I am proud to be a part of an organization that is so dedicated to helping kids realize their potential. As we work together to enhance the opportunities of our youth and cultivate leaders of tomorrow, we at the Foundation are strengthening our communities and enriching all of our lives.”

The Chick-fil-A Foundation rallied senior executives and industry thought leaders to bring unique perspectives and guidance to the Foundation’s leadership and philanthropic efforts. They volunteer their time, talents and resources to support the organization and offer operational insights.
