MUNICIPAL AND CONSTRUCTIONACCESS SOLUTIONS
CORPORATE CAPABILITIES
East Jordan Iron Works, Inc. has been a part of the East Jordan, Michigan, community for over 125 years. William E. Malpass and his father-in-law, Richard W. Round, established the foundry November 8, 1883, to service the area’s booming lumber industry. At the time, the foundry produced castings for machine parts, ship parts, agricultural uses, and eventually railroads. Soon after the company was founded, W.E. Malpass called upon his brother James, a journeyman machinist in England, to join the firm.
When the lumbering era came to a close, EJIW expanded into new markets allowing continued success in changing times. The company shifted to the production of street castings, water works valves, and fire hydrants. In the 1920s and 30s William E. gradually transferred management to his three sons, William Henry “Will” Malpass, Richard Ward “Dick” Malpass, and Theodore Edward “Ted” Malpass.
As technology advanced during the 1950s and 60s, the third generation of leadership emerged. Will’s son, W.E. “Bill” Malpass, and Ted’s son, F. Bruce Malpass, converted the foundry to a completely automated, high-pressure molding line known as the Taccone Line. The new highly sophisticated equipment maximized production capabilities for the foundry.
Since the mid-1980s the business has been led by the fourth generation: Fred Malpass, son of Bill Malpass, and Tracy and Tad Malpass, sons of F. Bruce Malpass. They have trans-formed EJIW into an international leader of construction castings by modernizing its facili-ties, acquiring and establishing additional branch operations, and developing an umbrella of companies known as the EJ Group®. The EJ Group®, along with EJIW, have a world wide presence with products in over 100 nations.
Currently, several members of the fifth generation are successfully working in different capacities within the company.

A new large molding line was
installed in 2009. The line
has helped better utilize the
melting and manufacturing
capability at the East Jordan
facility. It was built to produce
molds with up to 76” long
by 60” wide flask sizes. It
completely automates pattern
changing, sprue cutting, vent
drilling and flask clamping.
The East Jordan and Ardmore foundries have attained ISO 9001: 2000 Certification.

Water ProductsA commitment to innovation and growth is also
found in our Water Products Business Unit.
The EJIW WaterMaster® Fire Hydrant line and
FlowMaster® Resilient Seated Gate Valve line
are constructed from high strength ductile iron,
allowing us to provide lighter products with higher
pressure ratings. Both product lines are recog-
nized throughout North America for dependability,
reliable performance, and superior quality. Our
hydrants meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI/
AWWA C502, and are UL listed and FM approved.
Since the 1920’s, East Jordan Iron Works has
manufactured fire hydrants and valves for
municipal water systems. The Water Products
operation moved to a new state-of-the-art facility
in 1998. Located in East Jordan, Michigan, this
facility features modern machine tools, special
coating facilities, and an automated assembly
and testing area for fire hydrants and valves.
Insist on cast iron Valve Boxes made in the USA!
EJIW produces two- and three-piece 5-1/4”
boxes, in both slip and screw designs. Our valve
boxes meet the requirements of the ASTM A48,
offer interchangeability with major U.S. manu-
facturers, and are less prone to breakage than
boxes made with thin walls and lower grades
of iron.
Iron and steel Riser Rings are light, quick to
install, and minimize traffic disruption. EJIW
offers patented designs in thousands of sizes.
The INFRA-RISER® Multi-purpose Rubber Composite Adjustment Riser patented products
are installed between the iron casting and the
manhole/catch basin structure. They create a
watertight seal — preventing infiltration into the
system, prolong structure life, reduce traffic vibra-
tion damage, and are environmentally friendly.
EJIW offers iron, aluminum, and steel Access Hatch doors in a variety of sizes. These doors
provide easy and secure access to subsurface
installations. We have solutions for all loading
requirements — from pedestrian safety to
aircraft loading.
