Fish & Chip Shops Aroundthe UK Celebrate National Fish & Chip DayFish & Chip shops up and down the UK helped celebrate our industries National Day by dressing uptheir shops, running competitions, raising money for charity and joining in on social media.Throughout the day #nationalfishandchipday remained the 3rd talked about topic on Twitter withit even making the 2nd spot in some regional areas!

In London, Kingfisher Fish & Chips, Winnerof 2017’s Chip Shop of the Year pitched uptheir mobile van at Trinity House anddished our free portions of Fish & Chipsto workers and tourists alike whilst raisingmoney for The Fishermen’s Mission! Thebeach themed event attracted thousandsof visitors and a range of handy propshelped the public get involved.Down in Portsmouth, Long Johns kindlyprovided Fish & Chips to service men andwomen on board The HMS Forth, Merseyand Tyne whilst members of The RoyalNavy were interviewed by The BBCBreakfasts’ John Maguire on their fisheriesprotection fleet.

Staff at both our Coatbridge and Gateshead depots also took part intheNational Fish & Chip Relay in the week building up to NationalFish & Chip Day as well as enjoying a chippy lunch on the day.

Turning Used Cooking Oil to Green EnergyThings have certainly changed and UCO is now regarded asa vital source of Green Energy. The energy created from UCOproduces very low levels of CO2, to the benefit of ourattempts to reduce Global Warming.To make Green Energy the UCO must be processed and cleaned and, at first, itwas not worthwhile investing in UCO processing equipment as we were notcollecting enough to warrant it. In time our collected volumes have grownsufficiently to allow us to make the commercial investment in a UCO RecyclingPlant where we now process UCO ourselves.

We spent a considerable amount of time and effort looking at various UCOprocessing methods across the UK and Europe and in Europe many of the plantsin no way met the environmental and hygiene standards that, as a company,we would accept! However, we did find a processor in Germany who processeswaste organic material, including UCO, cleanly and hygienically and knew wecould realise our vision by working with Wichelmann’s – the manufacturer oftheir processing plant.

We made several visits to their factory in Northern Germany to discuss ourneeds with the owner Herr Bernd Wichelmann, until we were satisfied that theplant that they proposed would give us what we wanted – a clean and hygienicprocessing system.

It has taken us three years of intense activity and refinements to develop aprocessing system that fits our purpose and we are delighted to report thatthe Recycling Plant was brought into operation in March this year.

We are extremely fortunate to have an excellent Plant Manager and Supervisor,Tony Armstrong and Jeff Wilkinson, who have the operational skills requiredto run this complicated plant and who, along with their team, are absolutelydedicated to - and proud of – this ‘state of the art’ equipment.

Our UCO Recycling Plant operates to strict Environmental Permittingregulations and we are working to ISO 14001 standards. We source and sell‘fresh’ oils and fats, collect UCO and now process it. This is knownenvironmentally as a ‘cradle to cradle’ approach and you and your UCO arepart of this valuable virtuous circle.

As a company we have been processingand packing edible oil since 1893. In 2006we started to collect our customers’ UsedCooking Oil (UCO) as an additionalservice in the years following the BSEoutbreak which caused the Governmentto stop farmers from feeding waste foodssuch as UCO to farm animals. Thissituation created a UCO disposal problemfor our customers and our new servicecreated the perfect solution. Bill Colbeck

The Recycling Process

The process starts with Fatboxxes full of solid UCO being placedin our ‘warm room’ where the UCO is melted. After this themelted UCO is vacuum pumped through a series of filters whichextracts unwanted elements such as fine particles of food. Thefiltered UCO is then pumped through a Heat Exchanger, wherethe temperature of the UCO is raised before it is released intothe settlement tank.In this tank the constituent parts of the UCO separate out. The oilfloats on top of the fine food particulate which, in turn, floats on topof the water that has separated out of the oil. This process takes about36 hours and the longer we allow the UCO to settle, the morecomplete the separation.

After the separation process, the UCO itself, only contains 1% of water.The separated water and food particles at the bottom of the tank arepumped off for use in an Anaerobic Digestion plant.

The processed UCO is collected by tanker for use either to generateelectricity or to process into bio diesel. In the UK it is stipulated thatdiesel fuel sold at the pump must contain a minimum 4% Bio fuel. InGermany the minimum is 10%!!

Our new Recycling Plant has created four new jobs and wesee this as a very positive investment in the local economy,the environment and the fight against Global warming –as well as the future of Henry Colbeck Limited.

In March this year we rolled out a new computer system to replace our existing onewhich had been in place for over 30 years! The old system was becoming out-datedwhich was limiting integration with modern technology and preventing us fromdeveloping our customer service for the future.

Putting a new system in place hasn’t been without itschallenges and a little bit of pain! You may haveexperienced some it with us! We have been workingvery hard in the background to ensure that any issuesare addressed as soon as we are aware of them.

Theinvoices, delivery notes and statements are now smallermaking them much easier to handle and file. Even better,you can choose to receive a copy of your invoice andcredit memo via email, once a week.
