Chris White, Conservative, MP for War-wick and Leamington, also spoke in tribute.

He said: “I am utterly shocked to hear

“She was elected only last year to serveher constituents and she leaves behind ahusband and young children. My thoughtsand prayers are with them today.”

College event givesstudents EU voiceSTRATFORD Collegerecently played host toa Question Time-styledebate focused on theEU Referendum.

Former BirminghamYardley MP, John Hem-ming, of the LiberalDemocrats, and BillEtheridge, of a UKIP MEPfor the West Midlands, werejoined by political analyst,Matt Cole, and stand-upcomedian, MaureenYounger, for a lively discus-sion on the merits and draw-backs of EU membership. Itwas chaired by former ITVCentral journalist Bob Hall.

The event was master-minded by students fromthe college’s CreativeMedia programmes.

Students from across thecurriculum attended andhad the opportunity to voicetheir opinions to the guestsand pose questions that

were said to have kept thepanelists on their toes.

Despite the panelists’opposing views on EUmembership, all four werein agreement on one majorpoint: the importance ofthoroughly debating a sub-ject about which many feel

they are ill-informed, ofexplaining the issues indepth, and allowing individ-uals to ask the questionsthat matter to them.

Mr Etheridge said: “Ithink debates about the ref-erendum give people achance to actually ask ques-

tions and to cut through allthe crossfire. People can askwhat really matters to themand this will allow them todecide how to vote on whatwill probably be the mostimportant decision they willtake in the political spherein their lives.”

Trio jailedfor caravanthefts spree

It follows a four-yearcase which began in Sep-tember 2012 after a fourthmember of the gang,Andrew Lee, was arrestedon the M6 after being foundtowing a stolen caravantaken from FennyCompton.

And at Warwick CrownCourt last Friday, SeamusMcDonagh, 57, DavidChristopher McDonagh, 36,and Seamus McGuire, 25,all from Coventry, werejailed for six years, nineyears, and eight years, respectively, for severalcounts of conspiracy tosteal.

Lee, who acted as adriver for the three ring-leaders, admitted hisinvolvement at an earlierhearing, but did not turn upat court for sentencing, anda warrant has been issuedfor his arrest.

Following his arrest, aninvestigation revealed thatLee had been working asthe driver for an organisedcrime group which wasinvolved in stealing cara-vans and transit vans fromLeicestershire, Stafford-shire, the West Midlands,Warwickshire and Worces-tershire.

It was then discoveredthat in 2012, SeamusMcDonagh and his son,David, had stolen 17 cara-vans from the five counties

used crime analysts to lookthrough automated numberplate recognition cameras(ANPR) to detail vehiclecar movements, whichlinked the men’s vehicles tothe theft locations.

The footage showed thaton 16 occasions a vehicleowned by SeamusMcDonagh was in convoywith the stolen caravans asthey travelled along themotorway.

Investigations revealedthat ten different clonednumber plates were used bythe McDonaghs whentowing the caravans.

Having identified thethefts, police executednumerous search warrantswhich led to over 20 mobilephones being recovered, allof which had been in theexact area of each stolencaravan at the times of thethefts and convoys, and theMcDonagh were arrested.

Police were laterinvolved in a high-speedpursuit with SeamusMcGuire.

Detective ConstableRichard Zarcone from War-wickshire Police, said: “Iam pleased with the resultfrom Friday, which demon-strates that we take reportsof vehicle theft very seri-ously and will deal withoffenders robustly.”

Jailed: Seamus McDonagh, top, David Christo-pher McDonagh, and Seamus McGuire.

THREE men have beeen jailed for a total of 23years after stealing £250,000 worth of caravansand transit vans.

Bourne triumph againWELLESBOURNE made it seven wins from seven in theCotswold Hills League Premier Division with a 62-runsuccess over reigning champions Exhall and Wixford.

Visitors Exhall were left to rue five missed catches asBourne’s superior fielding skills played a big part in theresult. They had to dig deep after slumping to 32-3 afterbeing asked to bat first.

In Birmingham League Division Two, Stratford’s matchat Halesowen was abandoned. Players from both teamswere happy to wait around for a late start, but the umpiresdeclared that the conditions were not fit to play.

Full cricket round-up in this week’s Herald.
