Emerald Bay is on the West End of Catalina, with access to untouched beaches, coves, and dive sites in one of the largest operations on Catalina Island. We were started in 1925 as a Boy Scout Camp, and have operated continuously ever since (except during World War 2, when we are a military training base). We have grown monumentally over the past 15 years, becoming one of the most renowned and successful summer camps in the United States and continuing to push the progression of the Scouting Movement.2

Dive into discussions about Emerald Bays ocean wildlife at our large Aquarium stocked from local waters.The Pennington Marine Science Center is the largest aquarium on the island and affords the best opportunity in scouting to learn about Marine Biology. We can help new scouts reach their next rank!

Campers who are new to scouting or have only recently bridged from Webelos are invited to do the First Year Rank Advancement Program, which uses the first half of each day to work on the advancement requirements to reach the rank of First Class. They will still have opportunities after lunch each day to work on other elective merit badges.7Troop Activities

Live the Scout LawEmerald Bay has been on the cutting edge of Moral and Ethic Programming. We refocused our mission into building good people through the Scout Law. We encourage scouts to apply the Scout Law in every interaction through the Values Game, and we have found ways to incorporate discussions and applications of the scout law in our merit badge classes and at meals.9War Canoe

War Canoe is the troop outpost activity in which troops canoe to nearby Parsons beach to camp out in the sands. Spend the day hiking silver peak, snorkeling in Beavers and Smugglers cove, swimming in the savagely beautiful landscape, and cooking your own Dutch oven meal.10Aquacade!

Scoutmaster Belly FlopThe ultimate test of speed, strength, skill, and teamwork, Aquacade gives troops a chance to participate in a camp-wide competition. Events range from sand castle building to relay races to the ever-popular scoutmaster belly flop. Compost and Sustainable GardeningThe Eco ClassroomEnergy and Water ConservationEmerald Bay has been on the vanguard of Environmental Education and Sustainability. We helped write the requirements for the new Eagle-required Sustainability Merit Badge, and we have made Energy and Water Conservation, waste management, and recycling part of our camp lifestyle. We run a garden that composts much of our food waste, and we have a number of structures constructed of recycled materials using leave-no-trace principles.12Rugged E

Hope you brought a dry bag. Were canoeing around the entire island!Rugged C takes participants on a week long trip around Catalina Island. Canoers will visit untouched beaches in the hidden corners of the island that are far off the beaten path, and will visit Avalon, Little Harbor, and some of the main sights and coves in the area. Spend the end of your days snorkeling, grilling on the beach, and body surfing in this unique adventure.14Rugged S

Experience Catalina from underwater!Rugged S, or Rugged SCUBA, is a week long PADI Open Water SCUBA Certification Course.Catalina Island is one of the Top Ten Diving Destinations in the world, and we have some of the best dive sites on the island in our cove. We dont teach in pools, but in the famous California Kelp Forests. Must be 12+15Rugged O and Rugged R

Advanced DivingRescue DivingRugged O and Rugged R are the next step for Sport Divers. Rugged O is an Advanced certification that trains divers in deep diving, advanced Navigation, Fish Identification and Night Diving among other skills. You will dive from our boat at incredible dive sites all over the west end and leave a much stronger diver.Rugged R is the step after that, a Rescue Diver Certification that trains advanced divers in Diver First Response, Search and Rescue, Oxygen Administration and self-rescue techniques.
