LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Rev. Patrick G. Cecil VICARIATE II YOUTH AWARDS
Sunday night we celebrated the Vicariate II Youth Ministry Awards at the White Eagle. Bishop Frank Kane, Vicar of Vicariate II was the keynote speaker. Ten outstanding teen leaders received this award from St. Mary of the Woods. They were Caroline McGowan, Isabela Karwatowicz, Matthew Mieling, George Bullock, Agnes Connolly, Shannon Bayless, Krystyna Kaminski, Nick Thilmany, Jake Sepich and Jeffrey Bullock. These teens have been participating the Teen Led Mass planning and taken on leadership roles in the choir, as a sacristan, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers and leading the ushers and greeters.
The members of the choir opened the evening by singing Beautiful Things, Blessings and Jesus Say Yes. Bela Karwatowicz was chosen to do a witness talk about how ministering at the Teen-Led Mass through planning and leading the choir has deepened her relationship with God and made her feel a part of a supportive community.
All this could not have been possible without the help of the parents who came together with the teens to create this new leadership experience. Many thanks goes to Parvin Karwatowicz, Mary Anne Eichhorn, Lynn Thilmany, Michael Rabbit and Amanda Thompson who have been working with this amazing group of teens for the past two years!
We welcome new teen ministers and leaders! If you are interest in being trained as a minister for the Teen-Led Mass, there will be a training on Tuesday, March 10th and Sunday, March 22nd from 7:30—9:00 pm in the Church. All are welcome, newly confirmed 8th graders as well as any high school students! Any questions, email Amanda Thompson at [email protected] attend the next Teen-Led Mass on Sunday, March 15th at 5:00 pm and support Teen Leadership in our Parish!
JESUS AND THE MARKETPLACE
The scene in today’s Gospel is the temple precinct in Jerusalem called “the court of the Gentiles,” a virtual marketplace filled with merchants and money-changers. Jesus observes the transactions with growing indignation until he reacts physically. As far as we know, this is the only time Jesus resorted to physical force.
Perhaps what made Jesus so angry was that even in a place of worship, people could not get away from buying and selling. All of us need, some-where, a temple that has been cleared of consumerism. Perhaps it is a church, or some private place—a place of personal retreat or place of shar-ing with others.
This “marketplace” sometimes gets a bad rap as a place where people only care about money. Many caring people in the world earn their living in the “marketplace,” but all of us can be tempted to see people as only customers or clients. They are more than that. They are individual people who want to be loved, not used. This is why we need a haven from this world. We need a quiet place, where we can have our view of the human race corrected.
We also need to look within ourselves. Emerson wrote: “In the corner of my heart is a plant called faith that needs watering at least once a week.” This is why we need a haven from the world, where we can back off on a regular basis and take a fresh look at ourselves. Peace, Father Pat

PARISH LIFE Exodus 20:1–17; 1 Corinthians 1:18–25; John 2:13-22 Dignity of Work and Rights of Workers
Jesus spent years working as a carpenter. Work is im-portant to help people live good lives, so people must be paid a fair wage to provide for themselves and their families.
We are reminded that God worked and God rested, and we are asked to do the same. Do we empower oth-ers to attain meaningful work? Do we help others to keep the Sabbath? Do we keep it ourselves?
Jesus is angered by injustice and takes action. He is unafraid to let his opinions be heard. Do we speak out against injustice where we see it, or do we assume it’s someone else’s responsibility?
This week’s CRS Rice Bowl Story of Hope takes us to Niger, where we meet a family whose livelihood is governed by the seasons. We all experience seasons of challenge, in justice or sorrow.
"How do we display our hope that a season of justice will come, our trust that “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom?"
“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own pov-erty.” Pope Francis Loving God, We thank you for the many gifts you have given us. Bless our prayers and sacrifices this Lent. May we bring hope and life to our sisters and brothers who suffer with hunger each day. Unite us through Christ with the poor worldwide, and bless our ef-forts to bring relief to those in need.
Amen
Invites you to join us in celebrating the tradition of the St. Joseph Sweet Table
We invite you to share in this tradition with your fellow parishioners after each of the Sunday masses on March 15th in the Parish Hall. This is not a bake sale; instead, this is an opportunity to share in some fellowship and honor the St. Joseph tradition. Donations are optional.
Can you donate some sweets? We welcome any donation of baked goods for the table. Please contact Beth Houck at [email protected] with your donation and to arrange drop-off.
About the St. Joseph Tradition
St. Joseph's Day, or the Feast of St. Joseph, came about in medieval Sicily. During a bad drought and famine, Sicilians prayed to St. Joseph, who was pa-tron of workers and the guardian of family, for help, and the famine ended. To give thanks for ending the famine, a yearly feast -- consisting of pasta, bread, egg dishes, fish, vegetables and desserts -- is now prepared in his honor. St. Joseph's Tables, as the feast is referred to, can be found in churches, restau-rants, homes, and banquet halls across the country. Any leftover food is traditionally given away or sold, with the profits donated to help the poor.

8th Commandment: Thou shalt not bear false witness against your neighbor (Exodus 20: 16) Outright lies are certainly on the DON’T list. We can also add gossip to the don’ts in this category. This can be a real challenge. A juicy piece of gossip can be entertaining, cleverly presented, and provide chuckles or outright laughs. But at whose expense? The obvious DO in this category might be to work on positive speech. As kids many of us heard the caution: If you cannot say something nice, say nothing at all. This direction frequently came from Mother. Wise woman. The DO approach for this commandment comes with an extra benefit. If you say and do something nice, you’ll feel better about yourself! And, you might just spare yourself some embarrassment at a later date when the dishonesty comes to light. Use sweet words....you may have to eat them later.
The Bible Study Group meets on Mondays at 1:00 pm in Jubilee House. We’ll be working on the “Book of Job” this Monday, concen-trating on Chapters 11 & 12
All are welcome to join us.

TODAYS ALMS COLLECTION IS FOR OUR SMOW EMERGENCY FUND
NEXT WEEKS ALMS COLLECTION WILL BE FOR THE FATHER LEO T. MAHON FUND
Monsignor Leo T. Mahon was the third pastor of St. Mary of the Woods Church. He recognized the struggles of families who sent their children to Catholic schools. Sometimes illness, employment situations, or unexpected events cause families unanticipated hardships making it difficult to meet their tuition requirements. For this reason, a fund was started in his name. It is used to supple-ment tuition payments for families who have fallen upon hard times. Your donation will benefit families needing assistance meeting the rising costs of tuition. Thank you in advance, for your generosity.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS – MARCH 22
The Loaves & Fishes Ministry will be providing sack lunches on March 22nd for those in need at the Marquard Center and St.
Stanislaus Kostka soup kitchens. Sign up will be next weekend March 14/15th after all of the masses. If you need them you will receive six sacks for the lunches as well as an instruction sheet when you sign up. *Again if you could please help us go green and reuse your own bags, that would be great!* You will need to drop off the lunches you prepare on Sunday, March 22nd between 1:00 and 3:00 pm in the parish resource room by the elevators. Over 400 lunches are needed so this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to lend a helping hand right here in our own community. If you are going out of town next weekend but would like to sign up, you can call Jill Niemi at 847-800-8369. We can sign you up over the phone. Thanks to everyone for your continuing support!

FAITH DIRECT REPORTS THAT 10 DONORS STILL NEED TO UPDATE THEIR
ACCOUNT INFORMATION!
In the last two months the Parish suffered the loss of over $4000 in donations due to account suspensions. The most common fix for the problem is updating credit card informa-tion. FaithDirect notifies donors of this. Please respond if you are contacted by FaithDirect regarding updating suspended account information.
There is a catch-up feature that permits donors to take care of planned donations that failed to clear, simply by using this feature. Please consider supporting St. Mary of the Woods with electronic donations through Faith Direct.
If we give according to God’s principles, God will give back to us. The young man who gave his loaves and fishes didn’t have to go without dinner.
Stewardship reminds us to count our blessings, acknowledge God’s gifts to us, and express thanks to God by a proportionate giving of our time, talent and treasure.
“God can multiply his favors among you so that you may always have enough of every thing and end even a surplus for good works.” (II Corinthians 9:8)
The decision to give has not so much to do with calendars and budgets. Really, the decision to give is really a matter of putting your life with God into perspective.

Consider enrolling in FaithDirect as a means of consistent giving. Electronic giving through Faith Direct is based on the stewardship model of sacrificial giving in which we place God First. It is not just a financial transaction, but an entire program that enhances stewardship principles. By participating in this programmed giving, you are able to donate to the parish consistently and we are better able to budget, knowing in advance the funds that will be available on a regular basis. Consider your many blessings and pray about what level of giving would be appropriate for your circumstance. I’d like to recommend the Faith Direct program to you. You may visit the FaithDirect website at www.faithdirect.net or call their toll-free number 866-507-8757 for more information. EDUCATIONAL NEWS Principal Points
St. Mary of the Woods School National Junior Honor Society On Tuesday, March 10th, twenty-seven St. Mary of the Woods Middle School students will be inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. Students, parents, current NJHS members, and faculty will gather in the school gym to witness the induc-tion ceremony. New NJHS members qualified for acceptance because of the high standards of excellence they achieved in all areas of their lives. As part of the ceremony, NJHS members will describe five areas in which the they are required to excel in order to become a member of the National Junior Honor Society. They are: scholarship, service, citizenship, char-acter, and leadership. Our NJHS members are working hard to provide school safety (crossing guard), lead our school in raising money for St. Baldrick's, and many other projects that will help our community at large. Congratulations to all new inductees and current members for your hard work and dedication! God Bless, Mrs. Yamoah
Religious Education Corner
We were busy Sunday making sure that each family had received their Rice Bowls so they could fully participate in the Parish Project. We also spent time measuring the second graders height for the line up for First Communion, a very important event.
This week we highlight Rene Kudlinski-Baltudis, one of our fourth grade teachers. Rene has been a member of the St. Mary of the Woods Faith Community since 1978. She was married here and has three beautiful children—Daniel, 22; Nathan, 18; and Anna, 15. All three children received all of their sacraments at St. Mary of the Woods.
Rene is a Chicago Public School Special Education teacher who works with mostly Latino children in her current position on the near west side. Rene has taught fourth grade here at St. Mary of the Woods for nearly ten years. She feels that teaching children is her calling from God and finds interacting with young people al-ways brings relevance to life and puts her life and actions into per-spective. She finds the rewards always positive and purposeful for herself and the children she is fortunate to interact with in her family, work, and spiritual life.
In her own words, “It is truly a privilege and blessing to serve the Faith Community and I am truly grateful to all the children, families and parish staff I have interacted with over the years at St. Mary of the Woods.”
We are very blessed to have Rene working among us.
God bless,
Marcy Mahoney

2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Bracket Challenge “March Madness” – the annual NCAA men's basketball tour-nament – is sweeping the nation! Sunday, March 15th is Se-lection Sunday, when the nation’s top teams will be named to the tournament bracket – and the tournament officially begins on Wednesday, March 18th. Faith Direct is using this exciting tournament as an opportunity to support our parishes and help spread the word about eGiving! This year Faith Direct is hosting their 2nd Annual NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Bracket Challenge that lets our parishioners win cash prizes for your parish – including a $1,000 first prize, $500 and $250 for the second and third-place brackets, and a special prize for the highest parish participation. This is also a fun way to reach out to people who haven’t yet signed up for eGiving, and let them know about Faith Direct and how it’s an efficient, convenient way to support the parish.
You can share the sign-up link (www.faithdirect.net/bracketchallenge) If you are a basketball fan, you can take part in the tourna-ment and challenge your fellow parishioners to catch March Madness!
Thanks for your continued support of the FaithDirect program. We look forward to awarding great cash prizes that parishes can use for their ministries.
