Introduction to RU40 features
Description
RAN2124: HSPA 128 Users per
With this feature 128 simultaneous HSPA serving users (HSDPA and
HSUPA) per cell are supported. This feature increases the number of
serving HSPA (HSDPA and HSUPA) users per cell in CELL_DCH state to
128. It mainly deals with the BaseBand capacity enhancem
with the new HW and SW. The BTS provides resources and handles the
increased number of users, while the RNC takes care of enhanced
admission and overload control.
With this feature, the HSPA is used in Cell_FACH
Cell_FACH more users can be supported in Cell_FACH state and smooth
and faster data transmission can be provided for users not requiring large
data volumes. Services for sending frequent but small packets can be
handled more efficiently. The reason behind introducing the specified
enhancements in Cell_FACH states are the quick HSPA access (improved
setup times) and improving performance of the legacy R99 RACH/FACH
channels.
The RAN2451: Fast Dormancy Profiling feature identifies smartphones
causing unnecessary signaling load. Identified smartphones are moved to
Cell_PCH with shorter timers to avoid signaling connection release. In
addition the data threshold for common channe

This feature reduces the state transition time from Cell_PCH and
Cell_FACH.
This feature introduces dynamic service or application prioritization for
HSPA scheduling. Prioritization is done dynamically between bearers,
according to the service actually used in a bearer. This feature also
introduces dynamic prioritization of UL traffic for single NRT RAB users.

2. WCDMA IPA-RNC changes
2.1 Introduction to WCDMA IPA
RU40 introduces the following IPA
• RAN2538: 1000000 RRC Connected UEs in RNC feature that allows the RNC2600smartphones and always-on applications in the network. Thisreduces the effort on network optimization
• Reduced software upgrade time (for more information, see RAN2528: 1 Hour RNCUpgrade Time)
WCDMA IPA-RNC RU40 Delta of
user Experienced This feature introduces new counters for end
(scheduling priority indicator) class for HSDPA traffic.
The RAN2717: Smart LTE Layering feature introduces support for the
redirection of active LTE-capable UE from WCDMA to LTE. In the early
LTE-supporting UE, redirection is well-supported and thus preferred. LTE
cell reselection for the UE in idle mode, Cell_
in the WCDMA layer has been enabled by the RAN2067: LTE Interworking
feature.
RAN2435: SRVCC from LTE and
Single radio voice call continuity (SRVCC) from LTE function allows for
voice over IP (VoIP) call handover from the LTE to the WCDMA as a
normal CS voice call. Also CS
Fallback from LTE function is supported.
RAN2302: Dynamic HSUPA BLER
RAN2302: Dynamic HSUPA BLER allows the operator to define different
BLER targets for:
• HSUPA peak rates
• HSUPA cell capacity
• HSUPA user throughput at cell edge
The power of HSUPA downlink control channels is adjusted based on the
required
power level at the UE.
Feature RAN1910: Flexible RLC in UL belongs to basic software. This
feature allows the use of variable RLC PDU sizes up to 1505 bytes for the
WCDMA uplink (UL), which reduces the overhead in the RLC layer in the
uplink; this, in turn, enables higher HSUPA peak rates.
RNC changes
Introduction to WCDMA IPA-RNC
RU40 introduces the following IPA-RNC product improvements:
RAN2538: 1000000 RRC Connected UEs in RNC feature that allows the RNC2600on applications in the network. This protects the operators' investments and
reduces the effort on network optimization for smartphones.
