Meet the members

Hi all my name is Mike Troth, I live near the metropolis of Redditch, have been a member of a few cameraclubs over the years and have picked up a lot of ideas on photography from each club on film and now digital. Iam a member of Smethwick as well as Worcester camera clubs.

Back in 1994 did an on line course from Adobe on Photoshop and this has encouraged me into the creativeside of photography.

My main interests are people , but i have been known to take nature and sports images. I like to entercompetitions both club and internationals and have had some success in both.

Les Bailey writes of recent travels:-

Started in Oslo, where 30% of the city isbeing redeveloped at any one time. and asausage is the cheapest thing you'llsee. Some fantastic new buildings, the'Bar Code' developmentparticularly. Hugely expensive, occupiedby Deloittes, PWC and thelike. Includes residential andcommercial though, to keep the areaalive, rather than becoming a ghost townat night.

We visited The Viking Ship Museum, which holds three longships; theOseberg ship dating from circa 820, heGokstad from 890, and the Tune ship(mostly a wreck) from circa 910. Allthree are made of oak, with 30 - 32oarsmen. Containing many artefacts aswell as the ships, it's a great place tovisit.

Next came the Fram museum, whereAmundsen's ship (The Fram…) isheld. Another great place, you can walkon and in the ship. There are eerily life-like models of Amundsen and the cook,

Adolf Lindstrom. Lindstrom had been onthree expeditions, two with the Fram, andwas famous for his good humour andfood. The pancakes he's holding out lookedible…

There is obviously still anti-Naziresentment, evidenced by the 'Nazi FreeZone' stickers posted around thecity. The image attached is on thewalkway across to the Bar Codearea. Norway, though neutral, wasoccupied by the Germans in WW2. Ofparticular interest was the heavy waterfacility at Vemork, made famous by thefilm 'Heroes of Telemark'. The Germanswanted the heavy water to develop anuclear bomb, and increased productionsignificantly. 'London' decided that theplant should be destroyed, but beingsituated on the side of a steep gorge, access was difficult. The only bridge was

heavily guarded, so it was decided that saboteurs wouldscale the cliffs. Twelve saboteurs climbed down one side, crossed the river, and then scaled the other face, reachingthe railway track that led to the plant. Access was easy, since this area was unguarded. Once in the plant, explosives were laid in the basement, where the electrolysiscanisters were producing heavy water. The plant wasdestroyed, and none of the saboteurs were captured.

The Germans decided to transport the remaining heavy waterto research facilities. This was to be by ferry, which wasunguarded, a weak link. Overnight, explosives were plantedin the bow of the ship by saboteurs. It was sunk with theloss of 14 Norwegian and 4 German lives. (Sunk on LakeTinnsjo, image attached shows point of sinking).

Images from Telemark andregion.

Although 'Heroes of Telemark',the plant is near a village calledRjukan, and was itself calledVemork. Neither sounds asgood as 'Heroes of Telemark'though. The bridge is now usedas a bungee jump location, aswell as single file access forvehicles up to the plant. Abungee jump, lasting threeseconds jump to rebound, costsjust short of £100.00. The guysare busy all day every day, apparently enthusiasts have a

list of 'must jump' places, Telemark being one. The gorge is much deeper than they jump; 3 seconds down, then the operatorslower a winch cable and that takes about 7 minutes to hook up and get winched back. I tried to shoot a series of the girl in blue, unfortunately a tree gets in the way of the last second's drop. The operators are very well organised; the jumper gets strapped inwith a body harness as well as ankle harness, stands up onto the platform, one guy holds their ankles whilst another shovesthem off, then the second guy lets go of the ankles - gives a reasonably straight fall rather than a chaotic plunge.

The waterfall is one of hundreds we saw, not particularly large, very pretty though, with a walkway behind. Hence the double-exposure image showing the houses across from the fall. There are a collection of phones below the walkway, dropped byenthusiastic snappers who tried to get too close and slipped. Strangely this fall was Chinese-tourist-free, almost unique in myexperience. I have a series of 'inevitable' images of Chinese tourists with selfie sticks. Maybe another week.
