  • Shike Bertoletti is the International President of WJJF/ WJJKO & was brought out all the way from Italy to Adelaide by Kyoshi Carl Withey President of WBKA & Hanshi Pete Pace from Goshin Ryu Bujutsu. Hanshi Hans de Jong also travelled all the way from WA & also taught during the 3 day seminar.

Brief martial arts background of Shike Bertoletti Shike Bertoletti began his martial arts training when he was 12 years old in Greco Roman Wrestling & fencing. He began practising Shokukai & was one of the first black belts of Master Yoshinao Nanbu in 1961. He also practiced Shotokan, Shito, Judo, Kendo but above all Ju Jitsu of Japanese origin Yoshin Ryu. In 1976, with the foundation & leadership of the WJJF (World Ju Jitsu Federation) with Soke Robert Clark, he began his long trips to Japan & joined the school of Hontai of Saburo Masanori Minaki, 17th Patriarch, thanks to the presentation of So Shihan Eiji Ogasahara, where he remained until Soke Minaki’s death. He received his 7th Dan Kyoshi in 1984 by the same Master Saburo Minaki. In 1997 he earned his 8th dan by Soke/ Sosai Kunio Tatsuno of the Sheshikai of Osaka. In 2004 President Paul Hoglund (President of JJIF, International Ju Jitsu Federation) issued him the 9th dan. His career culminates on April 2005 (Venice) in the grant of 5th Shike title of the school Koden ENSHINRYU Honmon ENSHINRYU-BUJUTSU, honorary and dynastic title that only a few western persons can get. Friday Night Seminar The Friday night Seminar was for WBKA members only, was well attended & thoroughly enjoyed by all. I personally found Shike Bertoletti to be very approachable, easy to talk with, his demonstration & explanation of techniques easy to follow. He taught Ju-Jitsu techniques. It was a pleasure of learn from the great man who also happens to have a great sense of humour. For a man in his 70's he is very agile, carries himself like a young man & demonstrates superb techniques. We cannot thank you enough Shike Bertoletti, and also Kyoshi Carl Withey & Hanshi Pete Pace for bringing out this great man to teach us all. Shike Bertoletti & Hanshi Hans de Jong shared the teaching. Shike Bertoletti taught the black belts a Flow of Ju-Jitsu techniques, whilst Hanshi Hans taught some jujitsu to the juniors.

Saturday morning started bright & early at 9am. WBKA for the second day hosted Ju-Jitsu Masters Shike Giacomo Spartaco Bertoletti, President of the prestigious World Ju-Jitsu Federation, World Ju-Jitsu Federation Kobudo Organisation, and Soke Hans De Jong, Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu JuJutsu. We are so honoured to host two of the world best exponents of Ju- Jitsu, who have enthralled all who attended today, with their skills, knowledge and enthusiasm, passing on their eminent knowledge to young and old alike. The dojo was buzzing all day, everyone and more people tomorrow for day three. Congratulations to sensei Domanic Puz on his promotion to Godan (5th Dan) Shihan Goshin Ryu. He certainly earned it today (acting as Uke for Shike Bertoletti), congratulations Shihan. Shike Bertoletti refreshed our memory of the Ju-Jitsu flow techniques from the previous night & he added techniques to the flow. After every demonstration he encouraged the group with various abdominal exercises finishing with backward rolls, prior to us practising what had just been taught. His Uke for the seminar was Dominic Sensei from Goshin Ryu Bujutsu. Dominic Sensei did well as Uke & flowed with the techniques being taught. Shike Bertoletti good naturedly gave him a slap now & again to remind him if his delivery was slightly incorrect. Dominic Sensei accepted it all with a good nature & in humility. Dominic Sensei is also Italian & so there was an immediate connection between Shike Bertoletti & Dominic Sensei. Hanshi Hans de Jong today taught escapes from hand grabs.

  • Day Three of the WJJF Australia & WBKA Seminar in Adelaide South

    Australia - Sunday Seminar

Lots of fun was had by everyone including the two instructors of the day - Shike Giacomo Bertoletti & Hanshi Hans de Jong. Normally the third day is a long one, but

many attendees commented that the “time went so fast”!

Shike Bertoletti reinforced what he had taught on Friday & Saturday & added on/ changed flows slightly. He made learning these flows easy to understand & follow. Hanshi Hans de Jong enlarged what he had taught on the previous day adding on wrist locks, lapel grab escapes, take down defences, defences against Right Haymakers, escapes from Guillotine chokes. His teaching as always was fascinating & practical.

We broke for a BBQ lunch which was kindly organised by Hanshi Pete Pace & his club.

This was followed by a very special presentation by Shike Bertoletti. He wore a spectacular formal samurai outfit. He painted some Japanese Caligraphy on a piece of paper, folded in a Hachimaki which he then wore as a headband. Upon doing a formal bow in with his katana & announcing his Japanese Samurai title, he commenced a Katana kata accompanied by music. I think he was using a shinken (live blade). Upon finishing the crowd gave a wonderful applaud. During the seminar Renshi Dominic was presented with his 5th Dan & Shihan title. Hanshi Pete Pace received his 8th Dan & Hanshi title, and Hanshi Hans de Jong was presented with his Soke title & 10th dan. Shike Bertoletti also presented Dominic with a very special Hachimaki.

Congratulations to newly promoted Kyoshi Peter Pace of Goshi-Ryu on his new title Hanshi and 8th Dan, Goshin-Ryu BuJutsu/Goshin-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu presented on behalf of Shidoshi Glen Perry by Shike Giacomo Spartaco Bertoletti and Soke Hans De Jong, who also presented Hanshi Pace with the WJJF 8th Dan certificate in Goshin Ryu and he was also entered into the Black Belt Hall of Fame along with Soke De Jong.

Shike Giacomo Spartaco Bertoletti, President of the prestigious World Ju-Jitsu Federation, World Ju-Jitsu Federation Kobudo Organisation, presented Hans De Jong, son of Soke Jan De Jong of Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu JuJutsu, with the Sokeship of his father’s legacy and charged him with the preservation of the art. Shike Bertoletti presented the official certification, and tied the specially made new red belt around Soke Hans De Jong waist and declared him Soke of Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu JuJutsu, Head of the family system. We are so honoured to have been part of this historic day. Congratulations SOKE HANS DE JONG of Tsutsumi Hozan Ryu JuJutsu.

Days 4 & 5 of the WJJF & WBKA Seminar in Adelaide South Australia. Having Shike here in Adelaide for just over a week has allowed many old and new prospective members to gain access to the WJJF - WJJKO International President and for him to enlighten students on the rich history, events, training and connections around the world of martial arts. Shike decided to extend the seminar for 2 more sessions, deciding to teach sword and bokken work. The students enjoyed the extra special sessions. Shike Bertoletti returned to Italy on the Wednesday & he had informed me he was heading to London the following weekend for another seminar. On behalf of WBKA and all who attended the historic seminar, congratulations!

  • As the International representative for the WBKA, I am very pleased with the World Budo Kan Seminar I hosted over the weekend. Kyoshi Carl Withey, who is 7th Dan Shodai Aikido and 8th Dan Atemi-Jutsu, travelled from Adelaide in Australia, along with his black belts for the two day seminar. He taught first generation Aikido and Ju-Jitsu throughout the event, along with basic techniques and stretching exercises. Members of the Shodai Martial Arts Dojo were joined by students from Birmingham, Surrey, Poole, Bristol and Exmouth, and all thoroughly enjoyed the event. Some students only recently began training whilst others had a few years experience, but Kyoshi Carl introduced techniques which were new to all.

On Friday Bret Smith Sensei was invited to become a member and International representative for Japan Hoshiyama-Ryu Ju-Jitsu by Hoshiyama sensei. I was overwhelmed and honoured to be invited and humbly accepted this kind invitation which shows great recognition and respect for all the work I do within the international martial arts world.

    A selection of the

students Anthony Fairbrass is one of my local students who was awarded his 4th Kyu orange belt in Atemi Ju Jitsu at the event told me he had such an amazing weekend and learnt some really effective new techniques. He was very surprised to receive a grading from Kyoshi Carl and orange is his favourite colour! Rafal Kaminski is a K1 kickboxer from Bristol who wanted to expand his knowledge and see if he liked Aikido and Ju-Jitsu. He had his mind blown away with how simple some of the moves were and hopes to continue his training by travelling down to Torquay whenever he can. His girlfriend Natalie Smith also joined in the training last weekend from a purely self defence angle. She had done nothing before and was pleased that she didn't need any strength to perform the moves, and that it was all down to technique. Mat Cast is an ex-serviceman who I began training 8 years ago, and who is now in the police force in Poole. He said he could not miss the opportunity to learn from Kyoshi Carl Withey while he is in the UK. He has heard me praise Kyoshi Carl's teaching and was pleased that he made the trip to

Torquay as he can take some of what he learnt back to work with him.

What was taught Kyoshi Carl Withey had obtained special permission to introduce Hoshiyama-Ryu Jujitsu during this seminar. He is one of only 5 people worldwide who has the knowledge and permission to teach this traditional martial art, which is a truly private Hoshiyama family system from a time in feudal Japan where jujitsu was a way of

life and death. I am now also one of these 5 people worldwide too, which I still can't believe that my small club in Torquay has been given the honour of helping keep this art alive. The moves can be fatal so it is not to be taught to everyone.

  • Shodai Aikido was also taught on Saturday, which is first generation Aikido. This is what I teach on Friday nights at Shodai Martial Arts Club, but there are many techniques and forms that mean that all my students, as well as the visiting ones, were still learning new moves.

Charity Fundraising I was also raising money for WW2 veterans and orphans at the Kodokwan Ju-Jitsu Club of Zambia. I met Jonathan Kruger Sensei whilst in Australia and the selfless work he does in Africa is truly inspirational. Budo spirit is not just about what students and teachers do on the mat in a dojo, but what they do for fellow martial artists and charities as well. I ran the Torbay Half Marathon for this great cause, and have continued to raise money to help them build a new school and to send a box of clothes and second hand gi's to the orphanage too. I hope to raise £1000 for them this year, and am half way there.

Next year's Event Shodai Martial Arts Club will be travelling to Australia for next year’s seminar, which has caused a lot of excitement amongst all my students. Everyone who attended this year’s event has an invite and spaces are very limited as they were for my event, which ensures the highest quality material can be studied and one-to-one tuition can be enjoyed.

Two of my students have also joined the WBKA on the back of this seminar which is also great. I am still on a high as to how successful my first seminar went, and I want to say a big thank you to my wife Hannah for all her support in my Martial Arts journey and for providing all the refreshments for the weekend, paperwork for the Club, moral support and training partner, and in helping me entertain the students and teachers with a great hospitality programme whilst staying with us in Torquay over the last fortnight. I owe her big time!! It has been a great experience in organising and hosting this event, but I'm glad it's someone else's responsibility next year, and all I have to do is get my club to Australia!!! I will be travelling to Japan in October 2015 to attend a bridge seminar in Kumamoto, after

Munetsugu Sakabe saw my training in Cyprus earlier this year and my links with Japan and Australia.

  • The Meeting of Styles Seminar was held at Kyoshi Pete Pace’s

Goshin Ryu Jutsu dojo at Para Fields 10am to 3pm.

The WBKA Meeting of Styles Seminar was well attended by junior & senior students from Sensei Carl Withey, Budo Kan Australia; Sensei Pete Pace, Goshin Ryu Jutsu, Para Fields; Sensei Tony Ricketts Hikari Aikido dojo, Ottoway; Sensei Darren Miles Camden Park Ju-Jitsu Club; Sensei John Alford Tugra Shan Martial Arts, Morphett Vale. In

addition there was Brett Sensei & a few of his students. The day began with Sensei Tony Ricketts teaching a few Hikari Aikido techniques including opposite hand grabs; defences off a Knife Hand Strike and Double hand Front Throat grabs. These

were all very effective allowing for a flow of techniques. Sensei Mark Thyer, Budo Kan Australia said in light of the recent frequency of knife attacks he would teach some street effective defences against knife attacks. Sensei Mark showed defences

against stabs, ice pick grips & slashes.

Sensei Dominic from Goshin Ryu Jutsu showed defences against grabs & follow on

techniques. Sensei Darren Miles from Camden Park Ju-Jitsu showed street applications using

    pressure points.

At the end of the seminar Professor Carl Withey presented a number of people

with their World Budo Kan Association membership certificates & badges.

A special presentation was made by Professor Carl Withey to Sensei Tony Ricketts who was granted the rank of Sandan Aikido. A huge congratulations to Sensei Tony who has demonstrated his high skills in Aikido at a number of WBKA Seminars & has

selflessly donated his time & effort to WBKA.

  • 3rd ISSUE 2015 Page 14

WBKA Meeting of Styles Tugra Shan Martial Arts 24 Oct 15

It was an incredibly exciting seminar & all students young & not so young thoroughly enjoyed themselves. After introductions the group was separated into adults &

    juniors.

Sensei John Alford (Iaijutsu) took the adults through Iaijutsu basics which included handling your sword safely, basic cuts & blocks, kata & kumitachi (2 person techniques). Techniques included different types of chiburi (symbolically removing the blood off the blade), noto (returning the sword to its sheath), ‘saya bunna’ control (control of the sheath). All students were very excited to participate particularly in the 2

    person techniques.

Meanwhile on the other side of

    the gym Sensei Tony Ricketts

    (Aikido) taught the juniors

    basics in sword techniques.

    Kyoshi Carl Withey (WBKA

    President) had brought along some

    short wooden swords (wakizashi).

    All juniors loved Sensei Tony’s

session. The short swords proved a

bonus for the short hands of the

    juniors.

The second session saw Kyoshi Carl Withey take over the training of the juniors. Meanwhile I was very busy tallying up the finances for the seminar. The fees for the WBKA seminars are very low in comparison to other seminars, and in fact the seminar fee today was just a mere $20. Monies collected today & other WBKA seminars all go towards the cost of the WBKA bringing out high ranking Masters from overseas and within Australia. From what I saw the juniors were having a very exciting time learning under

    Kyoshi Carl.

  • Page 15 3rd ISSUE 2015

Sensei Tony Ricketts took the adults through Aikido sword disarms. Sensei Tony has had extensive experience in this aspect of Aikido techniques. He has in fact trained in Japan as well as in Australia & runs his own Hikari

    Aikido dojo in Ottoway, Adelaide.

After lunch Kyoshi Carl took the adults through some counters against an opponent preventing you from drawing your sword. The adults were fascinated by these techniques and some implementing the techniques with ease, whilst others less experienced a little confused. However Kyoshi

Carl happily assisted students who needed help.

Juniors were taught by Shihan Richard Harding who has had over 40 years experience in various martial arts styles including taekwondo, judo & Tang Soo Do to name a few. I asked Senseis Dominic (Goshin Ryu Bujutsu) & Greg Fielke (Zen Do Kai) to

take turns in assisting Shihan Richard.

It was all too soon before the WBKA

Sword Seminar at Tugra Shan Martial Arts

was nearly over. Kyoshi Carl gave students

an insight into the benefits of becoming a WBKA

member including having access to seminars. He

also spoke of plans in 2016 to bring out some

highly qualified & ranked teachers for WBKA

seminars. Shihan Rohan Clifford spoke on

how he had recently joined WBKA and how he

had thoroughly enjoyed attending all 3 days of

the recent WBKA seminar run by Shike

    Giacomo Bertoletti (International President of

    the WJJF/ WJJKO).

A fantastic katana seminar was hosted by John Alford on the

weekend at his dojo. Our club was represented by Greg Fielke,

Ralph Williams, Barry Morgan and myself, we all learned a

great deal and it was incredible to be taught by such gifted teachers. Shihan Rohan Clifford BJC

Awesome day absolutely loved training with all of you it was ran very professionally thanks for inviting me and my students to your

event we all had a fantastic time. Sensei Shane Neville BJC

Great day with like minded people. Thoroughly enjoyed myself! Ralph Williams BJC

Thanks to all the extremely talented and personable instructors for their time and energy. Barry Morgan BJC
