THE DISTRICTThe District may be small, but it is mighty when it comes to federal funding. D.C. receivedmore federal spending than 22 states did last iscal year, counting contracts, grants andother inancial assistance. By far, most of that is contracts, and the Department of Defenseled the way. But the Department of Transportation awarded more contracts in D.C. thananywhere else in the U.S.

MARYLANDIn Maryland, health care awards rule, thanks in part to the wealth of biotech and lifesciences headquarters stationed around the National Institutes of Health and the Foodand Drug Administration, both based in Montgomery County. And yes, the Marylandcounty receiving the most in federal contracts this past year was Montgomery County, which got more than $3.75 billion in contract dollars.
