Questions 8 -14 are based on thefollowing text.

For many people. loneliness is most certainly a problem. Most peopleexperience loneliness due to problems or a lack of social interaction. Some mayeven suffer from debilitating loneliness that keeps them from performing normaleveryday activities or may keep them from progressing in their personaldevelopment. However, for many people, loneliness is common for them andmay come from a number of problems they may have in their lives.

    :;

11 People who do get lonely may find themselves feeling worn out, anxious, depressed, and physically tired. They may get a headache; they may tindthemselves tired or even experience stomach cramps. You may find some thatare critical of themselves and others, and they may spend far too much timecomplaining that they are miserable. The biggest problem of those feeling lonelyis that they become defensive; they may stop going out with friends, they mayspend all their time at work or do all activities by themselves. They may evenpush away their families and friends in fear that some people will reject andpush them away. For some, it becomes a problem even when they fOlm newrelationships because they feel that they may not be worthy of love and respect. As a result, they become clingy and obsessive which drive others away.

    10

    IS

III Therc are several types of loneliness. The first is social isolation which meansthat the lonely sufferers have cut themselves ofT from doing the things theywould normally do or that they would be doing. Invitations to social eventsbecome a problem. Instead they immerse themselves into difTerent projects thatthey could do by themselves. These individuals can be helped by involving themin voluntary work which would keep them from staying lonely.

    20

IV Another form of loneliness is interpersonal isolation which is when one feelsas though one actually does not belong in any of the social activities that onetakes part in. One may have many social engagements but none that makes onefulfilled or gives one direction. In short one feels tired and has no one to helpone out of the feelings one may have.

    25

V Next, some may sufTer from intrapersonal isolation which is caused by somedreadful events in their lives. usually the loss of a loved one. These personsmay throw themselves into projects and work to keep them from thinking ahoutthese situations. Even though they have social functions to attend and haveseveral support groups who want to help. they still feel isolated and lonely.

    3D

VI The last and possibly one of the most critical forms of loneliness is spiritualisolation- a lack of closeness to God. A person may pull away from God.during life changing events. The death of a loved one. espccia]]y a s p ~ ) u s e . mal

Questions 15 - 22 are based on fhe following passage.

I We may not realise this but sodium and salt are not the same. Salt is made upof 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride. We need only 500 mg of sodiuma day to keep our system running. This amount can be easily found naturally inmilk, shellfish. meat and vegetables.

I I Why must we be careful \vith the amount of sodium we take'? Scientificevidence has shown that the more sodium you take in, the higher your bloodpressure will be. forcing your heart to work harder to pump blood througharteries. This in the long run may harm the blood vessels making them lesstlexible. Another lesser-known health consequence is kidney failure. Thishappens when the kidneys have to work overtime to tilter out excess sodium.

    5

    10

II I So how do we cut back on sodium'? There are many ways that one could adoptto reduce the intake of sodium.

IV Read the labels before you buy something. If the sodium content is more than400 mg per serving. reconsider buying it. Look for lower-sodium versions ofthe food you love. Do not worry about your taste buds, as they will adjust to thenew taste in a fortnight. After that period. your palate becomes so sensitive thatit is tough to go back to the old way of eating.

    15

V Study serving sizes. A small package can contain two to three servings. A canof soup with 400 mg of sodium per serving, for example, will provide up to 800mg if you eat the whole can. 20

VI Understand the terminology. Choose the 'low-salt' or 'low-sodium' versIOn.These versions contain 140 mg or less per serving, or 'very low sodium' with35 mg or less per serving. 'Reduced-sodium,' on the other hand. means there isat least 25 percent less sodium than the original version.

VII Increase the intake of fruits and vegetables. They are high in potassium. amineral that can protect against the efTects of sodium. By increasing the intakeof mineral and at the same time reducing the intake of sodium, you can reducethe risk of cardiovascular diseases such as a hem1 attack by roughly 50 percent.

    25

VIII Flavour without the shaker. Season with salt-free spices and f1avourings likelemon juice or herbs - all of which have little or no sodium. 30

IX Drain and rinse canned beans and vegetables. One cup can pack in more than1.000 mg of sodium: but remcving the liquid reduces that amount by up to 41percent.

X Order smarter. At restaurants , ask the chef to cut back on salt when he makesyour meal. Have sauces and condiments such as salad dressing served on theside.

    35

XI Pick the right poultry. Many manufacturers inject chicken cutlets and breastswith saline to make them juicier. As a result, these parts are loaded withsodium before you even season it. Read nutrition labels or choose an additive-free organic brand.

    Questiolls 23 - 32 are based 011 thefollowing text.

I It's three in the afternoon and I sit next to a "small merry-eyed, russet-colouredold guy with mostly toothless mouth." Ketut Liyer is a ninth generationIndonesian medicine man. It's my first visit to Ketut and he's reading my palm.I-Ie tells me that I will find creative work that I'll be passionate about. He alsosays with absolute certainty that I will find my soul mate soon. Very soon. 5

II Ketut has rarely journeyed from his humble home in Ubud, Bali; yet, he hasbecome very famous particularly among tourists to Bali. Ketut's fame is a resultof the impact he had on writer, Elizabeth Gilbert. According to Gilbert, Ketut isresponsible for the prediction that changed her life. It was his prophecy thatenabled her to formulate the concept for her award-winning book Eat, Pray, 10Love'.

III Her enchanting depiction of Ketut in her book has resulted in throngs offoreigners appearing at his doorstep. His previous life of gentle obscurity.prescribing herbal remedies and rituals for his Balinese neighbours, is now adistant memory. On my most recent visit, I counted close to twenty people 15waiting patiently to have their palms read, many with the book in hand.

IV My introduction to the world of Ketut came while browsing an airport bookshopin Hong Kong. It was early 2008 and I was going to Bali for the very first time.Call it what you will; fate, providence, kismet. or just plain old-fashioned dumbluck, but as soon as I found my seat and pulled out the book to read, the lady 20sitting next to me whipped out her digital camera and excitedly began to showme photographs of a happy-looking, elderly Balinese man. She enthusiasticallyinformed me that this was the Ketut the Medicine Man who had helpedElizabeth Gilbert find success. Intrigued, I dived into the book's pages anddecided to pay a visit to the soothsayer. I wondered if he could live up to the 25other worldly expectations created by Gilbert? I hoped so. lfhe truly helped herwriting aspirations, perhaps he could breathe life into mine.

V I enlisted the help of some fellow travellers in tracking down Ketut's addressand in no time. we' re making our way to Ubud. Entering the front gate of hishouse, we noticed a cheerful man fitting Ketut's description sitting on the porch, 30just like Gilbert had written. He was in the midst of giving a palm reading to twoAustralian women. Ketut glances up at us a perky smile and gives a quick, friendly wave. When it's our tum to sit with him, his prevailing sense ofhappiness proves to be contagious. Although his English is very basic, Ketut'ssimple words are universally understood and singularly. 35

VI I returned to Bali several times after the first visit. I've also gone to see Ketut oneach tri p. Ketut is not a guru or a yogi in the traditional Indian sense. He doesn't

attempt to pierce into the depths of one's soul with burning eyes and assist in thejourney to enlightenment, nor does he seem to take on students as he did withGilbert in the book. However. each visit presents an opportunity to bask in anaura of uncomplicated happiness that emanates from him.

    40

VII The sun is setting and this magical little man begins a palm reading for twoAmerican ladies. They listen to him as he describes a future similar to the onehe predicted for Gilbert. "You will meet someone new for life who will behappy to be with you. and you will not be divorced again." Their eyes brightenthe same way mine must have during my first visit.

    45

VIII Success doesn't necessarily create happiness, but happiness in itself createssuccess. I think this adage rings true for Ketut. With each encounter. I realisethat most of my original expectations of him, garnered from the pages of Eat,Pray, Love. were misguided at best. Ilis profound joy and contentment energiseshis visitors, ading as a beacon of encouragement in following our ownaspirations. as Gilbert herself did.

Questions 33 - 41 lire based on the following text.

I Having a positive attitude can mean the difference between living a life full ofjoy and happiness or living a life full of depression and misery. Your attitudewill determine what you will experience in life regardless of the actualcircumstances. If there is one thing you can work on that will change your life,it is your attitude. This article will discuss the importance of developing apositive mental attitude as well as give you some tips on how you can developit.

    5

II Reality can be a difticult concept to grasp. How is it that two people can havethe exact same experience yet one person comes out of it loving life while theother comes out of it resenting life? There was a story of two brothers whogrew up in a home with an abusive father who drank all the time. Jt would beno surprise if both of these boys grew up to be alcoholics themselves with ahatred for life. One of the two brothers did just that. He followed his father'sfootsteps. However, the other brother grew up completely the opposite.Because he experienced that childhood, he made up his mind to be a caring andloving father because he didn't want his kids to go through what he had gonethrough.

    10

    15

III So what made the difference in the outcome of these two men's lives? It camedown to attitude. You see. it's not what happens to you that will determine howyour life will turn out; it's what you do about it that will determine your life. The reason for this is that by having a positive attitude, your decisions andactions will be ditferent than if you had a negative attitude and will thereforeexperience a different outcome as a result of those decisions.

    20

IV If you can understand this, then you will understand that you are in essence incontrol of your life. You can't control outside circumstances and events but youhave total control over your actions and what you decide to do with thosecircumstances. Your decisions determine your destiny but it's your attitude thatwill determine your decisions. This is why having a positive attitude is socritical if you want to experience a happy life.

    25

How to Have a Positive AttitudeV The first thing you will want to do is to acknowledge that you are in control of

your decisions and actions. Let's say someone cuts you of f on the highway. You can do one of two things. You can get mad or you can be glad that youdidn't gel into an accident. These two decisions can have completely differentoutcomes.

    30

VI When you are going aiter a goal and things don't turn out the way you want 35

them to, you will decide whether to feel sorry for yourself or to press on. Byhaving a positive attitude about life in general, you are more likely to make thedecision that will eventually lead you to accomplishing your goals. Settinggoals and reaching them isn't always easy. In fact, most of the time, it's hard.Whether or not you achieve that goal will heavily depend on your attitude. 40

VII Now that you know you are in control of your decisions and actions and howhaving a positive attitude can help you make the right choices, here are somethings you can do to develop a better attitude.

VIII Read positive books and messages. There are tonnes of different positive booksout there that can help you see life in a different perspective. You can even readpositive attitude quotes or even listen to audio programmes on the subject. Onereally well-known book is, "The Power of Positive Thinking" by NormanVincent Peale.

    45

IX Another powcrful step you can take is to start surrounding yoursel f with peoplewith positive attitudes. It's true that you become who you surround yourselfwith most of the time. When you hang around with people who have a positiveoutlook on life, their thinking will rub off on you. They can also help toencourage you to reach for your goals instead of putting you down like manyother people will. By constantly feeding your mind with positive material, youwill develop a strong positive attitude and once you have that, your life willnever be the same again.

Questions 42 - 50 are based on the following article.

I Have you ever seen a dolphin? Dolphins are often regarded as one of Earth'smost intelligent animals. though it is hard to say just how intelligent. Thedifficulty and expense of experimental work with large aquatic animals has sofar prevented some tests and limited sample size and rigor in others. Comparedto many other species, however, dolphin behavior has been studied extensively, both in captivity and in the wild.

    5

II Dolphins are social animals, living m pods of up to a dozen individuals. Inplaces with a high abundance of food, pods can merge temporarily, forming asuperpod: such groupings may exceed 1,000 dolphins. Individualscommunicate using a variety of clicks, whistles and other vocalizations. Theymake ultrasonic sounds for echolocation. Membership in pods is not rigid:interchange is common. However, dolphins can establish strong social bonds;they will stay with injured or ill individuals, even helping them to breathe bybringing them to the surfacc if needed. This altruism does not appear to belimited to their own species however. The dolphin Moko in New Zealand hasbeen observed guiding a female Pygmy Sperm Whale together with her calf outof shallow water where they had stranded several times. They have also beenseen protecting swimmers from sharks by swimming around the swimmers orcharging the sharks to make them go away.

    10

    15

III Dolphins also display culture, something long believed to be unique to humans. In May 2005, researchers in Australia found Indo-Pacific Bottlenose dolphins(Tursiops adunclls) teaching their young to use tools. They cover their snoutswith sponges to protect them while foraging. This knowledge is mostlytransferred by mothers to daughters, unlike simian primates, where knowledgeis generally passed on to both sexes. Using sponges as mouth protection is alearned behavior. Another learned behavior was discovered among riverdolphins in Brazil, where some male dolphins use weeds and sticks as part of asexual display.

IV Dolphins engage in acts of aggression towards each other. The older a maledolphin is, the more likely his body is covered with bite scars. Male dolphinsengage in such acts of aggression apparently for the same reasons as humans:disputes between companions and competition for females. Acts of aggressioncan become so intense that targeted dolphins sometimes go into exile as a resultof losing a fight.

the larger sharks, such as the bull shark, dusky shark, tiger shark and greatwhite shark are a potential risk, especially for calves. Some of the largerdolphinic species, especially orcas (killer whales), ma y also prey on smallerdolphins, but this seems rare. Dolphins also suffer from a wide variety ofdiseases and parasitic infestation.

VI Some dolphin species face an uncertain future, especially some river dolphinspecies such as the Amazon river dolphin, and the Ganges and Yangtze riverdolphin, which are critically or seriously endangered. A 2006 survey found nosigns of the Yangtze river dolphin, which now appears to be functionallyextinct.

VII Pesticides, heavy metals. plastics and other industrial and agricultural pollutantsthat do not disintegrate rapidly in the environment concentrate in predators suchas dolphins. Injuries or deaths due to collisions with boats, especially theirpropellers, are also common.

VIII Various fishing methods, most notably for tuna and the use of drift and gillnets, unintentionally kill many dolphins. Accidental by-catch in gill nets andincidental captures in antipredator nets that protect marine fish farms arecommon and pose a risk for mainly local dolphin populations. In some parts ofthe world, such as Taiji in Japan and the Faroe Islands, dolphins aretraditionally considered as food, and are killed in harpoon hunts or drive hunts.Dolphin meat is high in mercury, and ma y thus pose a health danger to humanswhen consumed.
