Our Legacy

In 1965, Fabio Bertarelli, father of Ernesto and Dona, became Chief Executive

and drove expansion internationally. In the 1970s, Fabio moved the company

to Geneva. By the turn of the millennium, Serono was operating in some 40

countries and selling its products in more than 90.

The Bertarelli family’s business history is indelibly tied with Serono, the

pharma and biotech company founded in 1906 and built over three

generations.

In 1935, Pietro Bertarelli, the grandfather of Ernesto and Dona Bertarelli,

became Managing Director. In 1949, Serono successfully develops Pergonal,

a fertility-enhancing drug.

In 1996, Ernesto Bertarelli succeeded his father as CEO and drove forward its

activities in biotech. In 2000, Serono was listed on the NYSE. In 2006, Serono

was sold to Merck to form Merck Serono and the family focused their attention

on establishing new businesses.

Academic Partnerships

Through the Bertarelli Foundation, Waypoint has long-

standing relationships with Harvard Medical School, Stanford

University and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de

Lausanne (EPFL), a leading Swiss institution dedicated to

education, research and technology transfer at the highest

level.

In April 2012, Merck closed its Geneva site. Led by Ernesto

Bertarelli, a consortium was formed to try to renew the massive

building as a location for results-driven scientific research in the field

of life sciences. Campus Biotech – this consortium of the Bertarelli

Family, Hansjoerg Wyss, EPFL and the University of Geneva – beat

all competitors and acquired the building in April 2013.

With the arrival of scientists from UNIGE, the Human Brain Project,

EPFL’s Centre for Neuroprosthetics, new Professors funded by the

Bertarelli Foundation, and the new Wyss Center for Bio and Neuro

Engineering, Campus Biotech is well on its way towards achieving

its vision of creating a European Centre of Excellence at the

forefront of global research in the fields of neuroscience and

bioengineering.

Infrastructure Services Availability and Business Continuity.

No redundancy in case of telecom lines or internet outage

No redundancy of infrastructure in case of hardware failure

Old back-end infrastructure technology

Small team unable to monitor all data center components
