Letter from the PresidentA word of introduction from your

new President, Bob Gates.

My wife, Celia RetzIer Gates, and I have been Co-Treasurers of our Society the last three years and haveserved on various committees since we joined tenyears ago. Shortly after we both retired in 1988, webegan our genealogy, literally from scratch. Noliving member of any of our families or our deceasedparents or grandparents had spent more than an hourof research on any family. Hence, anything we foundmade us look like minor heroes.

My home area is northern IL. Celia is a native ofWooster. Her parents and both her paternal andmaternal grandparents were all born in Ohio. Sinceour favorite hobby is travel, we have accumulated agreat deal offamily history on both sides.

In 1991, at an Ohio Genealogical Society meeting, mywife and I heard a statement that made a lastingimpact. The speaker, emphasizing computers, said"using the computer will allow you to do more in lesstime. You have a responsibility to leave somethingfor mankind." We took it to heart and have been ableto do two family history books.

A major goal of our Society this year is to get morepeople involved in our activities. The NominatingCommittee was unable to fill the regular VicePresident's office whose main duty is to arrange ayear of programs and be back up for the President.They were able to divide the responsibilities: a VP toback up the President; and a Program Committee offour people. Within less than 30 days they hadprograms lined up for the entire year and had made anattractive brochure that was given to everyone at ourannual Christmas Party on December 2. They will bemailed to the other members in our area. Theprograms for the first quarter are in this Newsletter.

In addition, three people have volunteered to assistour Newsletter Editor, Deb Keener, in searching forinteresting material. The inventory of a couple of ourbooks is getting low so we have started another groupworking, the Publishing Committee. The members ofthis committee will research the usage and purchasesof all our books. It will not be easy as they need tosearch the period from 1966 to 1997 when we were aSection of the Wayne County Historical Society.

Requirements: Ability to read and write

Flexible schedule: Could be morning, afternoon, or evening; no minimum or maximum number of hours required;you set your own schedule and determine the number of hours you want to volunteer daily, weekly, or monthly

Why?We, as a society, voted to do this project. There is no better time than the present to take an active role in your localgenealogy society.

Pay: The satisfaction of knowing you did your part in preserving Wayne County, Ohio history and making itaccessible to current and future researchers.

How can I help?There are three notebooks in the Wayne County Public Library Genealogy Department. These notebooks includedata for individuals buried in the Wooster Cemetery. Presently, we are using the three obituary index books in thelibr~ to:fill ~ missing d~th dates. If you are interested in helping out with this project or have additional questions,stop ill at the library or grve me a call at 330-262-0916, ext. 225. Ask to speak with Deborah. THE FAMILY TREEI think that I

shall never see,The finish of a

family tree,As it forever seems

to grow,From roots that

started long ago.Way back in ancient

history times,In foreign land and

brown,without my knowing,it makes me frown.People from places

near or far,I may be related

to the guy in thatcar.

I checked inlibraries,

cemeteries,and the books on the

racksI've been looking

for people withopinions and facts.

I've been hard atwork

for sometime,just to know

I'd give a dime.With everyone's

courtesy andgenerosity,

In 1998, our society started a Memorial Fund in memory oflongtime member Faye Grunder. This past spring,members of our society voted that this fund be designated for the future purchase of a copier. The copier wouldbe used to reduce the cost of the newsletter and other printing. An Ad Hoc committee has been designated forthis project. In August and September, two longtime members, Lloyd Vandersall and David Skelly, passed away.Donations in memory of these three dedicated members total $580 to date. We will keep you informed as moreinformation becomes available.
