Life is a process which is bound to time where people live within the constraint of time. The big question here is, how much time that we have in our lives which enable us to do all sorts of matters or “so-called” works. The question is do we rule time or does it rule us. Those are the is-sues raised by people these days as they claimed that they don’t have enough time. 24 hours a day is certainly a huge amount of time that we have in life. Besides, it will be interesting if people can see time like this:

HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TIME?ACADEMICS

With regard to the topic discussed, people are advised to be more reflective and keep on doing it as much as they can because this will lead to a conclusion where everybody is aware of what they are doing to fulfil their daily needs. It is arguable if someone says that he has done a lot of beneficial things in one day which the word ‘beneficial’ can be interpreted into various meaning from one to another person. Furthermore, always think that life is unpredictable where not all of our plans are can be accomplished in one day as there are always hurdles which can get in our way.

This is followed by turning the word ‘hours’ into ‘minutes’. In oth-er words, it is the question on how many minutes that we have with-in that particular hour and we do something with the time limita-tions given to us. Finally, plan your work in advanced so that you are able to set your own due dates before the actual date takes place. This is not an explanation on a scheme of work; instead it explains why people need to have the concept of a system in time management. In a nutshell, time management can be very important to us, especially

Such calculation will develop our awareness as we do have that amount of time in our daily life. To a certain extent, this has answered one part of the former question posed by the “people”. This prob-

lem has led to the topic of time management. The topic is very subjective as there are many tips and sugges-tions given by experts, unfortunately, it has the same points which do not help at all. People shall look this mat-ter from a broader view as time management functions as a system which involves the whole day, moreover, us in particular. It is better to take such concept because that is the reality and we live within domain of time itself.

INTERVIEW

Danial KhoririThe Aspiring Footballer

In this issue, we are proud to bring you an exclusive inter-view with Danial Khoriri, a former student of Uni. Portsmouth and a member of Kick-ers FC. Besides, Danial is also a coach and obtained his Level 1 Coaching Li-cense during Summer 2010. This is an im-promptu interview on both the Malaysian football landscape and his future plans.

Hello there! Tell us what made you fall in love with football.

My name is Muhamad Danial. I have a huge passion in football. I don’t know how exactly to define how did I fall in love with football. What I know is football is a team game and I always love to be around with my team which are my friends as well.

What is football for you?

For me football is a very BEAUTIFUL game, full of excite-ment, passion, discipline, focus, determination and much more. Football contributed a lot in sports history, because of football, there were many sports been invented therefore it is called one the oldest team sports. Football really means a lot for me. It gives me confident, discipline, determina-tion, focus and obviously the passion. This is one of the

ways that I can really focus and determine to do. It is just like you are in a battlefield when you are in the football match. You need to have strategies to fight or in other words to play. You play with dignity, pride and confident just like you are in the battlefield. These are your pride and dignity, having your emblem or flag in front of your jersey proves more important than carrying your name at the back of your jersey. This shows how beautiful the game was created and how teamwork is always important no matter whom you are. Everyone in team plays important roles in football. Everyone is equal. Everyone has the responsibilities. “Player doesn’t win trophy, team win trophy”. -Jose Mourinho

INTERVIEW

What is your worst injury? I had my ankle sprained when I played in Malaysia 5 years back I think and it happened again during a practice in Goals 3 months ago.

What is your proudest moment as a Kickers FC player?

“we really improved our fitness and strength and mentally we gained a lot of confident”

I don’t really have a proudest moment in football. For me what that I can be proud of is the competitive-ness that what we gave during the league that we played in Goals. We did improved a lot during the league, physically and mentally. In terms of physical we re-ally improved our fitness and strength and mentally we gained a lot of confi-dent because we think that we can be the same level or even better than them. That is what I am proud of.

Give three important aspects to be a good player.A. DeterminationB. DisciplineC. Teamwork

How can you contribute to the Malaysian football landscape since you are a licensed coach now?

How do you intend to be involved with the Football Association of Malaysian (FAM)?

Well, that is one of my dream. I don’t really want to be the President of the association. Maybe I can be

in the team that change the football in Malaysia. I hope that I can be the one who show the right way for the right person to be the president, the

one who is really influential in choosing the presi-dent.

I hope that I can contribute in early stage football.

Wayang Ku-lit wishes the best for Danial Khoriri in his future endeav-ours and what-ever he decides to pursue both Kickers and

The Food You Want to Eat from the South: Street Food

in Commercial Road

FOOD

LIFESTYLE

Anti-Bacteria Man

Food… is basically an important element for human be-ings to survive. However, the food you taste must be deli-cious and mouth-watering. Sometimes, the best food can be found on the streets. And the best street food in Ports-mouth can be found in the heart of Commercial Road.

Located right in the City Centre of Portsmouth, Commer-cial Road is a great place for shopaholics, street perform-ers, and of course food vendors. Along the road, you can just see many small tents pitched up and aroma from the many stalls fills the air (no, not the smell of cigarettes).

Aunty Jack Potatoes

One of the famous street stall is the “Aunty Jacket Po-tato”. It can be found in front of Burger King. Opens 24/7, this stall (according to me) could be dubbed “the most popular store” in that street. Obviously, the stall is the “mastermind” in Jacket Potatoes. You’ll never miss it because there will always be a queue. Jacket potato is an English cuisine and I believe it is very delicious. What is interesting about this stall is there is no meat (except tuna) as the filling of the potatoes. So it is safe for Mus-lim to enjoy. More importantly is the taste of the pota-toes. With a touch of butter and added with the filling of your choice, the potatoes is just right to eat. There are various fillings and that will cost you ONLY 3 Pounds!!!

My Recommendation: Tuna and Cheese. Perfect com-bination as the melted cheese and Tuna mixed with the smoking potatoes provides a perfect balance when you scoop it into your mouth. A smooth sensation.

Advice for eating: a) Eat when it is still hot. A cold one would ruin your taste buds.b) Share if you are a small eater. It is a large potato and small eaters (especially girls) can share and still be full.c) Must add Cheese!!! Sure it is fatten-ing, but no potatoes is nice without cheesed) Do not order the 2 pound’s potato. It only has butter or Garlic butter, and it is not as good as the 3 pound worth potato.

Choices of Fillings (Choose up to 2): Cheese Tuna and Sweetcorn Vegetarian Chilli Beans Onion

Cake Shake

Located just outside of the Subway sandwich store at the rear end of Commercial Road, cake shake provides the best milkshake (or at least the cheapest milkshakes) in the area. Milkshakes in the Western countries has be-come a famous dessert. All over England, you can see various types of Milkshakes from your typical Chocolate and Strawberry to wild and crazy Forrero Roche and Kit Kat milkshakes. What is even “out of this world” about this milkshake store is, its combined delicious cake and vanilla Milkshakes. You can mix over 10 cakes with the shakes (of course it also sells the normal flavoured ones).

Only opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Price: 2 pounds per cup.

Other food: During winter, they also sell various English soups with a Baguette worth 2.20 Pound. On a cold weather, a hot soup will warm you up.

Advice: a) Ask for a Shake Card. It is a card where you can collect stickers for every shakes you purchase. After buying 10 milkshakes, you can get one FREE.

b) Never drink this after a heavy meal. It will make you feel nauseas s as milkshakes can be filling.

c) The milkshake machine is very old. Do not be surprise if you found some chunky bits at the bottom of your milkshake.

Chocolate Bannoffee Tart Milkshakes. As crazy as the name, the milk shakes use Bannoffee Tart and 1 banana to be blended into the shake. The unforgettable choco-late should be thick enough to mix with the banana, causing a classic “delicious pairing” of the 2 ingredients. Absolutely delicious but high in Calories and sugar.

Dinky Doughnut Burger Grill shops all over Comm Road

For a punch of sweetness, go to the Dinky Cart out-side Mark and Spencer. They only sell this dough-nut with various drinks. It is fairly pricy as 1.25 pound only got you 10 tiny doughnuts. But the taste is beyond this world. Even after you scrapped off some excess sugar, the sweetness kind of explodes in your mouth. It is advisable to eat it when it is hot

I love the names of all these shops… Especially the cart named <Fat Boys = Good Food>. You can get cheap burgers and hotdogs. But do remember it is NOT Ha-lal. For a cheap, big and tasty burger, I recommend the burgers at “Refreshment” near the end of Commercial Road. The Burger is large and it cost only 1 pound. All these food are on the greasy side and I don’t recom-mend eating them (period). Try cooking it at home… =P

That covers most of the popular stalls in Commercial Road. Be sure to check it out before you leave Ports-mouth.

FASHION

designers’ sales weekI went to London to check out one of the events that bargain hunters look forward to, Designer Ware-house Sales (DWS). It only takes place 10 times a year. What makes it different from oth-er bargains is the labels on the clothes.

The names on the labels play major roles as people will do anything they can just to get their hands on it. Clothes and accessories including bags can be as expensive as a car and even a house, if it is a the rare Himalayan Birkin by Hermes. Only David Beckham would sacrifice £80000 for a petite handbag as a gift to his wife.

Back to the DWS, who knows you have travel until the

end of zone 2 just to get a good bargain for designers labels, not to mention walking through a scary alley and paid £2 for the admission! Your coats, jackets and handbags or any kinds of bags need to be left, no hand-phones or cameras! The studio was quite old and rusty.

It was raining at that time and the water pouring down through the walls, the staffs had to take the clothes away.

If you looking for Gucci, Dior, Fendi, Cha-nel or Prada, this is not the place to be.

But they do offer quite a range of Dolce&Gabbana, Just Cavalli, Valentino, Moschino Cheap&Chic, Love Moschino, Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Calvin Klein. Most of the labels were UK or Euro-pean designer but not as established as Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith and Stella McCartney.

There was one knitwear label that grabbed my attention, Goat. It was luxury, chic and sophisticated, yet very com-fortable with an affordable price for designer price tag. There are lots of scarves from Moschino Cheap&Chic, but when I compared the price, TK Maxx is much cheaper.

When you want something from design-er piece don’t ever compare the sales price with the high street sales, it is way dif-ferent and you still have to spend more on designer though it says ‘sales’. I walked out from the studios empty hands. I just do not feel the satisfaction of owning branded cloth-ing from this kind of sales. If you do not mind pay-ing £300 for a Calvin Klein tailor-made suit and walk out with big dark blue shopping bag without the la-bel’s name on it, this maybe your place to be, but not for me. I found out that there are so many private sales for designers’ brands in London. Some sales

need you to buy ticket and it can cost you almost £30 for an entrance ticket. If you go out empty hands without buying anything, £30 would be such a waste. Some sales are so private; hence you have to register yourself as a member first to get an invitation. Thus, as the conclusion, here is no easy way to own something luxury. The principle goes the same with owning money. You have to work hard for it! When all of your hardwork pays off, indulge yourself in Self-ridges or Harrods or immediately to the designers’ boutiques, even at Louis Vuitton, although you have to queue up for some time first before entering the boutique!

A NEW EMBRACED INTEREST

Photography is the re-cording of light that re-flects on any object and go through the camera lens and stay in the light recording medium such as film or digital sensor.

Photography was never my hobby until last summer, I bummed into the idea of lomography from one of my friend. Lomography is a freestyle shooting where the focus is not about the composition but the lighting ef-fect recorded on the film. I fall in love with the vintage reddish and yel-lowish look produced on an expired film. After a while, I found out that develop medium format film is rather difficult in Portsmouth where not ev-ery photo lab able to do that. Later on, I decided to get on a 35mm film SLR camera and to learn about pho-tography. I always in an indescribable excitement while waiting for my film to get developed. I’m here to share some tips to improve your skills in photography. No matter what cam-era you use whether a DSLR or a digital point and shoot, still it is possible to give you good photos.

Light and the surrounding

The environment especially the lighting condition is the core factor in photography. Choose a good day for outdoor photogra-phy. I find the best moment for photogra-phy is during overcast weather. However, you will not get a stunning photograph if you are out for landscape photography. If you opt for landscape photography the best time is during the sunrise and sunset.

Post processing

There is controversial that photo editing softwares manipulate the reality of the image. However, I view photo editing software like a film developing chemical. Sometime what we see in the LCD camera screen might not be the same as we trans-fer and view it in computer. Sometime, the contrast and colour saturation fade away when we put into computer. Then now, the image in the camera LCD become our guideline and use photo-editing software to tune the image until it has the look like how the image display in camera LCD.

After all, photography is a creative expres-sion, there is no correct or wrong way to express yourself. So, feel free to ignore all the rules and guides and be brave to try something out of convention. Lastly, go out to shoot as much photo as possible and don’t be scare to shoot a lot with a single subject, you can always choose the best out of it and dump all the crappy photos (I do that all the time).

Aw Win Chan

Read camera instruction manual ( A MUST!!! NO EXCEPTION!!!)Basically, you will be able to learn about the foundation knowl-edge from your camera instruction manual. For me, whether you are a professional, amateur or newbie photographer, everyone need to read the camera manual. From the instruction manual, you will be able to understand your camera func-tions and limits. If you lost your camera instruction manual, don’t worry. http://www.manualnguide.com/guide/consumer-electronic/digital-camera/ check out from this website or google it and you might find your PDF format of your cam-era instruction manual for free.

Tips on taking a good shot:

Composition

a. Use the rule of thirdRule of third is very useful when you want to create a balance com-posed image. Try to put the fo-cus subject around the centre box.

b. Try out different angleOne single subject, there are thousand ways to photograph it from thousand

different angle. Don’t be afraid to try out dif-ferent angle. Instead of putting your photo into landscape orientation, check out your view finder with portrait ori-entation, your image might come out good in different orientation.

c. Try to turn off as much auto mode as possibleI know that auto mode save you a lot of energy and time but you are not the one that taking the photo. You throw the re-sponsibility to the camera to decide how your image look like. Try to set as much setting into manual mode as possible to take control over your camera. In my ex-perience, I never learn about photography when I put my camera into auto mode.

MARTIAL ARTS: AN ANECDOTALEXPERIENCE

Yee Jin Cheng

Foreword: This ain't gonna' be a lecture nor academic piece, so take it easy, folks! : ) No sources quoted (if you discredit Wikipedia, that is). It's all to my knowledge.

Chinese martial arts have a long history dating back more than 4000 years ago. The earliest form of Chinese martial art recorded is Jiao Di, which is a combat sport involving contestants wearing head gears with horns and butt each other out. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor employed Jiao Di in his armies as a way to brawl rebels in 2697 B.C. Without the head gear, this combat sport would later form the basis of Shuai Jiao or Chinese wrestling and many Chinese martial arts styles. The term Kung Fu is often used to refer to the arts, but it can also be used to refer to skills in other non-martial contexts eg: cooking, carpentry. On the other hand, Wushu is a more precise term. The character Wu carries a martial mean-

Chinese martial arts encompasses many different styles. Along with that, there are many different ways to categorize them. One of the most commonly used category is via geographical location. The Yel-low River crosses through the heart of China in the centre. Styles originated from the northern part of the river would be deemed as northern styles while styles from the southern part of the river be deemed as southern styles. The term “southern fists and northern kicks” was commonly quoted to refer to the differences between the arts from both regions, that the northern style specializes in kicks while the southern style in hand techniques. However, such differences are not absolute.

Northern Chinese martial arts are commonly practiced in northern parts of China such as Henan province, Beijing, or Shanghai. Generally, northern styles emphasize on swift footwork, large, circular and powerful blocks and attacks, acrobatics, as well as deeply extended stances for conditioning of the body. It is said that such aerial and grand movements suit the often mountainous terrain of northern China and were historically meant for battling against Mongolian horsemen. Influences of northern styles can be found in Korean martial arts like Taekwondo, with their emphasis on high kicks.

Examples of northern styles included:

Tai Chi Northern Praying Mantis

Eagle Claw

Page 15: Wayang Kulit February 2011

Southern Chinese martial arts are commonly practiced in southern China such as Fujian (Hokkien) province and the Guangzhou. In contrast, southern styles generally emphasize low, rooted stances, short and direct hand techniques and lower kicks. It is said that such characteristics were due to the dense urban population and flatter terrain in southern regions of China which made close combat more feasible than large movements typical of northern stylists. Influences of southern styles could be found in Goju Ryu Karate, a Karate style from Okinawa, Japan.

Chinese martial arts contain a vast arsenal of hand and leg tech-niques. Different styles have their own set of techniques respectively, such as forming the fingers into tiger claws in Hung Gar or mantis hooks in Northern Praying Mantis. In general, all Chinese martial arts employ striking, kicking, felling, throwing, and joint-locking techniques in order to kill, immobilize, or paralyze the enemy with the least effort yet maximum efficiency. Throughout the styles, train-ing always consist of the basic stances, forms, combat application.

Stance training are meant to strengthen the fighters' body Stance training is often practiced statically by remaining in the position for a set period of time and dynamically, which involves moving in between different stances. Notable stances included the horse stance and the cat stance.

Forms or tao lu are pre-arranged sequences of movements which are meant to teach martial applications of the respective style and also to build proper body alignment. A style usually consists of several empty-handed and weapons forms and drills as well as 2-person fighting sets.

Application refers to the use of the forms into combat. Each move-ment in a form often corresponds to at least a particular combat situation, such as a punch or a kick.

At higher levels, practitioners would incorporate the use of Qi or internal force. Qi is often defined as the energy that supports every living being and the Chinese believe that by utilizing internal force, more powerful blows could be delivered without the requirement of brute muscle strength, a believe which in turn is very common from the western scientific paradigm. Internal force is of-ten generated via Qi exercises, better known as Qi Gong, or through stance training. In addition, the abundance of Qi builds healthier bodies and minds and increases life span.

I know it is funny to be recommending a children’s cartoon, but hang on a minute, it is FUNNY, and that’s the reason why I choose this! Megamind talks about how people always stereotype hero to be Superman-like, when in reality, anyone can be a hero. A good movie for a good laugh!

The final one is a romance movie. Jamie is a salesman and his most powerful asset is definitely his charms. Until one day he met someone who doesn’t fall for his sweet talks. So what now? And that’s how the story begins. P.S, this movie is R-rated, so it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Alright folks, if you don’t know who Russell Peters is, you should google him up right now! Nah, I’m just messing with you. Russell Peters is an Anglo-Indian who was born and bred in Canada. He is better known as a comedy superstar who aspires to break the ste-

He recently did a stand-up in the UK and I skipped my registration to watch it in the NIA! How was it? It was mind-blowing! I have to say that this stand-up comedian has a talent that not many of them have out there. He jokes about people and how they behave in a situation and puts it ever-so-nicely

for the audience. Among his all time favourite punch lines are ‘some-body gonna get hurt real bad!’ and forgetting, ‘take

Back to the show, he made some impressive acts on how the English were so into football that they forget everything else happening around them. He has performed a number of sold-out tours in China, South Africa, Australia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Jamaica, Trinidad, Singapore and also the United Arab Emirates. GOING TO UNIVERSITY(SECRETS OF SUCCESS)

When I was given this book, I thought that it will be another boring book but how wrong I was! This book is not a book that provides you with details about univer-sity life. It is an interactive book that acts as a guide to every student covering as-pects like studies, finances; night life and accommodation just to name a few. In fact, the title of this book pretty much says it all; it portrays a student’s life (with lots of introspection from the author) and how to make the most out of uni life.

The author of this book, Kevin B. Bucknall puts forth some brilliant points that students (like us) should consider to be successful in the university. For instance, Bucknall teaches us ‘how to survive during the first day’ and not be left out. He also emphasises the im-portance of staying focused on the degree and spending more energy on preparing a good thesis at the end of the year. He goes to the extent of providing a list of ‘good words and phrases to use’ when writing an essay/report or the like. Not only that, this book is also useful for those are still schooling but would like to prepare themselves for their univer-sity life. Bucknall has devoted an entire chap-ter to help students improve their study skills.

The way Bucknall has structured each chapter is very interesting. He starts off a chapter by in-troducing new ideas then moves on to provide some case studies and insert discussion points for students to reflect on and finally ends the chapter with a summary. So, if you are just too lazy to read the entire chapter, you can flip to the last page and have a look at the summary. The fact is you cannot put the book away because it is so gripping; it is written for students by a (former) stu-dent. The funny part is Bucknall has included some quotes throughout the books like “some stu-dents would rather get bad marks than make the effort of thinking–in fact they do. Please try not to be one of them!” and here’s another one: “for the cynics amongst us, team work means never having to take all the blame yourself ”. You could actually read the book just to ponder the quotes.

Sections on improving presentational skills, tips for exams, organising an essay are particularly useful to all students out there. This book would be an excellent supplement for the ‘Study Skills’ unit that we all took in our first years. To put it succinctly, this book is worth a read by all uni students as it helps in lots of aspects.

You’ll never know the future,Even you have shaman to help you, or,Unless you have super-power,But I bet you don’t.You’ll never know the future,Even you’ve learnt your past,Stay at present,If you think it would be the best for you. You’ll never know the future,You know the future by the name,But do you really know the future?Sincerely, I bet you don’t.You know nothing about the future, neither do Iso, what’s the point talking about fu-ture?Because you have a future. And the future is in your hands.

SPORTS

KICKERS FC

Kickers FC is a Portsmouth Malay-sian football club which was initiated by Aimran Halim late 2009.

Throughout 2010, the club has par-ticipated a number of tournaments and leagues within Portsmouth and in Malaysian games.

The notable achievement of the club is winning Cardiff Games 2010. Besides, Kickers FC was also the respected runners-up of the presti-gious Easter Cup. In 2011, Aimran Halim left Portsmouth for better op-portunities. Hence, the current captain is Uthama Zayed. The number of players in the club has been steadily increasing and not to mention their skills and confidence in both on and off the pitch has improved dramati-cally.

2011 will be a big year for the boys as they prepare to push up their game and compete in a higher level.

Currently, Kickers FC is participating in the Intramural University of Ports-mouth League. The first game con-cluded on 3rd February 2011 resulting in a 3 - 1 win.

They are playing on every Thursday in Nuffield Centre from 2pm to 4pm. If you are free, do cheer for them there!

In the following issue, we will introduce each member of Kickers FC.
