Network Access Control

There are two main levels for controlling user access:− MAC layer− IP Layer

MAC layer – the Wi-Fi uses two types of techniques:− Based on MAC layer authentication

Keys / pass-phrases (WPA-WEP-PSK)Certificates (802.1x)Requires minimum user skills (for embedded clients)

IP layer – service access control (e.g. internet access):− Based on user authentication

Based on the 802.1xDialer – IP based or PPPoECaptive portal

All of the above requires a RADIUS server for the authentication
