Warm up: complete on separate piece of paper‐answer in complete sentences

1. How is a ire blanket used during an emergency?2. What is the difference between a dependent variable and an independent variable?

3. Explain the difference between a criteria and constraint (use examples in your explanation).

Title of Notes:

Introduction to Waves

the wave, slinky : observations

Oct 302:21 PM

The nature of waves:

What is a wave?A wave is a disturbance or movement that transfers energy from one place to another

‐ Waves can transfer energy over distance without moving matter the entire distance

‐ Forces can start a disturbance

Waves transfer energy NOT matter.

Oct 302:22 PM

The water waves below are carrying energy but are not moving. Waves can only exist as they have energy to carry.

Oct 302:24 PM

There are two kinds of waves :

mechanical waves and

electromagnetic waves

Today we will focus on mechanical waves

What are mechanical waves?

‐ waves that transfer energy through maer (medium) ‐ A medium is a form of maer through which the wave travels (such as water, air, glass, etc.)

‐ Examples: (cannot move through empty space)

water waves, sounds waves, waves traveling down a rope or string, earthquake/seismic waves

‐ Empty space: space where no maer is present

Oct 302:54 PM

What are the two kinds of mechanical waves? based on how energy moves through them

Transverse Waves type of wave in which the disturbance moves

at right angles (perpendicular) to the direction on which the

wave travels

Longitudinal Waves (Compression Waves)type of wave in which the disturbance moves in the same direction that the

wave travels

Oct 303:01 PM

Transverse waves examples

water waves, snapping rope in hand

Oct 303:04 PM

Longitudinal waves (compression waves) examples

spring, sound waves

Oct 303:03 PM

BrainPop

• Actively watch the Brainpop on waves and take notes as you do

Oct 303:07 PM

Read waves passage

HW: complete question based off notes and passage

* List 4 examples of waves and explain why it is considered a wave
