Properties and Characteristics

Page 2: WAVES Properties and Characteristics. What is a wave? A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another

What is a wave?

• A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another location.

• It carries energy but does not carry matter.

Parts of a Wave

Page 4: WAVES Properties and Characteristics. What is a wave? A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another

Properties of Waves

• Amplitude: the height of the wave, measured in meters. • Wavelength: the distance between adjacent crests,

measured in meters. • Period: the time it takes for one complete wave to pass

a given point, measured in seconds. • Frequency: the number of complete waves that pass a

point in one second, measured in inverse seconds, or Hertz (Hz).

• Speed: the horizontal speed of a point on a wave as it propagates, measured in meters / second.

Compressional Wave

Transverse wave

A transverse wave can be created in a rope if the rope is stretched out horizontally and the end is vibrated back-and-forth in a vertical direction.

Longitudinal/Compressional

• . A longitudinal wave can be created in a slinky if the slinky is stretched out horizontally and the end coil is vibrated back-and-forth in a horizontal direction.

Compression

• A compression is a point on a medium through which a longitudinal wave is traveling which has the maximum density.

Rarefaction

• A rarefaction is a point on a medium through which a longitudinal wave is traveling which has the minimum density.

Categories of Waves

An electromagnetic wave is a wave which is capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum (i.e., empty space )

Page 12: WAVES Properties and Characteristics. What is a wave? A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another

Mechanical waves

• A mechanical wave is a wave which is not capable of transmitting its energy through a vacuum. Mechanical waves require a medium in order to transport their energy from one location to another. Example of a mechanical wave. Sound waves are incapable of traveling through a vacuum. Slinky waves, water waves, stadium waves.

• Speed = Wavelength • Frequency

v = . F

Water Waves

• All waves are traveling energy, and they are usually moving through some medium, such as water. A water wave consists of water molecules that vibrate up and down at right angles to the direction of motion of the wave. This type of wave is called a transverse wave.

Light Waves

• Light waves are a little more complicated, and they do not need a medium to travel through. They can travel through a vacuum.

• A light wave consists of energy in the form of electric and magnetic fields.

• The fields vibrate at right angles to the direction of movement of the wave. Because light has both electric and magnetic fields, it is also referred to as electromagnetic radiation.

•

Light Waves

• Light waves come in many sizes. • The wavelengths of the light we can see

range from 400 to 700 billionths of a meter.

• But the full range of wavelengths included in the definition of electromagnetic radiation extends from one billionth of a meter, as in gamma rays and sound waves. Light is one small part of the spectrum.

Visible Light

• Visible light is light that can be perceived by the human eye. When you look at the visible light of the sun, it appears to be colorless, which we call white .

Page 21: WAVES Properties and Characteristics. What is a wave? A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another

Making colors

• When sunlight passes through a GLASS of water , we see a rainbow on the wall. This would not happen unless white light were a mixture of all of the colors of the visible spectrum.

• Isaac Newton was the first person to demonstrate this. Newton passed sunlight through a glass prism to separate the colors into a rainbow spectrum.

Colors

Page 23: WAVES Properties and Characteristics. What is a wave? A wave can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium from one location to another

Making colors

• He then passed sunlight through a second glass prism and combined the two rainbows.

• The combination produced white light. This proved conclusively that white light is a mixture of colors, or a mixture of light of different frequencies.

• The combination of every color in the visible spectrum produces a light that is colorless or white..

Summary

One wavelength is one vibrationOf the charge particle

That is making the wave.

Waves travel throughEmpty space or matter

Electromagnetic Waves

Frequency is the number of wavelengths

That pass a certain pointIn one second.

Waves are made of electric fieldAnd magnetic field
