Waverley School, VIth Form and Children’s Centrehas seen rapid change and improvement over thelast five years. We gained Specialist HumanitiesStatus in 2006 and we were graded ‘Outstanding’ byan OFSTED inspection in April 2010. We are anexpanding school, becoming an all through schoolfor students aged 0-19 in 2012 with a resource basefor students with cognition and learning difficulties.This is an exciting time for the school and itsinclusive vision. We have high expectations ofbehaviour, attendance, uniform, achievement andattainment. We believe in every child being given theopportunity to achieve his or her potential andbeyond. We have a strong, committed staff who aimto do this.

At Waverley we intend to create an environmentwhich allows all learners to flourish by encouragingmutual respect for each other and a respect for‘learning’. Enabling every learner to recognise and

realise his or her potential and capacity to achieve,encouraging every learner to ‘aspire’. We intend toimprove the quality of Learning and Teaching byrecognising that we are all learners and continue todevelop our expertise and professionalism asteachers, promoting a climate of high expectation.We regularly review the work of the school so thatlearners get the best possible opportunity.

As a school we are part of a community andtherefore have responsibilities, at Waverley weintend to create and develop opportunities forworking with others in the community. Working inpartnership with and valuing the contribution ofanyone whom has a stake or interest in the school.Not only creating a culture of learning in school buta learning culture in the community, supporting ourcommunity in its development and to become aflourishing and thriving community in the future.That we ensure that there is an equality of

opportunity for individuals, students, parents,teachers, and the school community. At Waverleywe value the diversity of the school community andrespect the individuality of each person. Wecelebrate in the achievements of all the schoolscommunities showing the excellence from all faiths,cultures, genders and orientations.

Working together to promote the best start in life Waverley’s Children’s Centre ensures that allfamilies and children have the best start in life. TheCentre supports the work of Waverley Schoolproviding a broad range of services for pre-birth,children, young people and families from 0-19.Through our work we aim to make sure all youngpeople enjoy living, learning, developing and achievingin a safe environment where all can flourish.

The Centre works in partnership with manyprofessional agencies to provide a flexible range ofoptions to support children and families within theircommunity.

Our provision includes:

• Early education • Family support and parental outreach• Child and family health services• Links with schools and Children's InformationServices

• Employability skills through Job Centre Plus andtraining providers

Laying solid foundations for future success.We are committed to the highest possible standardsfor teaching and learning. Our curriculum at all KeyStages, inspires our students to the highest levels ofachievement and develops their aspiration forsuccessful future careers.

The School Council plays an important contributionto the richness of school life. The voices of ourlearners are important to us, in helping us shape thefuture of our school. The work of the school councilis underpinned by Year Councils and regular surveysof student opinion.

Our Early Years curriculum planning is based on thesix areas of learning set out in the Early Yearscurriculum/Foundation Stage document, publishedby the DFE. These areas are:

• Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy• Communication Language and Literacy• Creative Development• Personal, Social and Emotional Development• Physical Development• Knowledge and Understanding of the World

The curriculum covered through the six areas oflearning, are delivered through a wide range of exciting,stimulating and challenging themes and topics.

Our Reception groups are differentiated to allowchildren to work at levels appropriate to their ability.This supports the needs of all children; it respondsto children’s different learning styles and allows themto develop their curiosity and talents. Our approachprovides them with a firm platform for learningthroughout their lives.

The school puts on a wide range of extra-curricularactivities both during the school day and afterschool. Diversity days promote the school ethos:Humanity, Equality, Aspiration, Respect. These dayssubmerse our students in the culture, arts andheritage of different continents of the world. Theypromote understanding and tolerance. We hopethey will inspire and excite our students to learn andachieve.

Curriculum

In year 7 & 8 all students follow a programme ofstudy which includes not only the core subjects:English, maths & science but also the complete rangeof visual and creative arts, design technologyhumanities, languages and ICT. All students areexposed to digital technologies which enhance andsupport learning.

In year 9, 10 & 11, students follow a core pathway ofEnglish, mathematics, science, PE, RE and ICT. Inaddition students are provided with options toselect dependent upon their interests and aptitudein GCSE, vocational and AS/A level. Optional subjectscovering a full range of creative and visual arts,design, humanities, languages, business studies andwork-related programmes.

We firmly believe in getting the best out of all ourstudents and we achieve this by ensuring they studya pathway which will allow them to develop theirskills and excel.

Developing talent and nurturing passion to become All our students demonstrate a huge appreciationfor celebrating humanities, diversity and creativity.Students are offered a broad range of regular extra-curricular opportunities after school. The schoolalso offers Diversity Days throughout the schoolyear where the timetable is suspended. Duringthese days students explore and celebrate thecultural diversity of different regions of the worldthrough the visual arts, cultural heritage, literature,drama and music.

Waverley Cricket Academy is sponsored byWarwickshire County Cricket and the English

Cricket Board. Students entering our CricketAcademy will spend part of their week at theEdgbaston ground being trained by the very bestcoaches. Students entering our Cricket Academywill gain NVQ’s in groundsmanship as well asstudying their choice of BTEC’s at level 2 & 3.

Finally, the English Cricket Board have supported theschool in the creation of our own cricket ground inBelcher’s Lane for the use of our students and localcricket clubs. Work on this site will begin inSeptember 2011 and the pitch will be ready for usefor the summer of 2012.

We foster an understanding of human values andattitudes, past and present and how society isorganized, develops and changes, enabling all ourstudents to succeed in a Global and British society.Our Sixth Formers will be the citizens of tomorrowand we strive for their success. The promotion ofour culture of ‘Learning through Diversity’ will helpthem to reach this goal.

Our sixth form specialises in developing theaptitudes and entrepreneurial skills of all our

students to ensure their future economic success.Our courses are designed to provide outstandingsuccess for all students including students withcognition and learning difficulties. Our focus is firmlyplaced in work related and applied subject fields. Weoffer a wide range of BTEC level 2 & 3 courseswhich provide our students with an entry level intothe world of work. We also work closely with localemployers to provide effective work experienceplacements which help students gain confidence,experience and additional work place skills.

21st Century School Environment – Building Futures

Waverley School 0-19 serving children, young peopleand families from pre-birth to 19 and beyond is beingrebuilt on Yardley Green Road and is due to open inApril 2013. The opening of this building will provide‘outstanding learning environments’ to ensure‘outstanding achievement and attainment’ is securedfor all our children. This new facility will provideaccommodation for 654 students in our primaryphase, 940 students in our secondary phase and 200

students in our sixth form. The provision also includesa Cognition and Learning Resource Base.

The specialist facilities in science, design, technology,creative arts and sport together promote independentlearning, supporting students in the development ofinquiring minds which link theory to practice. Themedia rich environment allows both pupils and staff toexploit an exciting range of learning experiences

through sound and image. Together with the new 21stcentury ICT infrastructure, digital learning is supportedanytime, anywhere.

This will provide our community with a state of theart facility to support a successful and flourishingneighbourhood.
