  • Waverley cemetery, mapsFor an overview of the cemetery layout, colour-coded to the various religious denominations, see below.

    Most section notes also include maps indicating the section layout. These are not drawn to scale and are indicative only, but should provide assistance to researchers visiting the cemetery.

    The boundaries between various sub-sections, and even between sections, are often not readily apparent on the ground. Intending visitors to the cemetery are advised to read the relevant section notes carefully, and to make full use of the nearby graves reports that this CD can provide.

  • Waverley Catholic VaultsChecking of inscriptions was completed in August 1992These vaults run along the northern boundary of the cemetery (backing onto Trafalgar St). They commence immediately inside the main gate.

  • Waverley Central MoundChecking of inscriptions was completed in March 1992This lawn section is located in the roundabout at the junction of the roads dividing Sections 5, 6, 9 & 10. It is arranged in four circles, which for the purposes of this CD we have numbered 1 to 4, counting from the inner circle. Grave numbers listed are those recorded on plaques attached to some headstones.

  • Waverley Section 16 (Catholic & General)A large section in the middle of the cemetery, Section 16 is easily located as the Irish Memorial stands along its northern border. The memorial is to 79 men who participated in the rebellion of 1798 the United Irishmen. The names of 17 who were part of the Dublin uprising of Easter 1916 were added in 1948, and the names of a further ten were added after they died by hunger strike in Long Kesh, 1981.

    Section 16 Special Vaults (General)Checking of inscriptions was completed in October 1995Rows: 1-24, on the northern perimeter, starting next to the Irish Memorial.Graves: 382-456

    Section 16 Irish Memorial (Catholic)Checking of inscriptions was completed in August 1995This memorial, originally plots 577-600, is located along the northern perimeter opposite the road that runs between Sections 9 & 10.

    Section 16 Special D (Catholic)Rows: 1-3Graves: 1-7Located at the extreme western point of the section.

    Section 16 Vaults (Catholic)Checking of inscriptions was completed in June 1995Rows: 1-11, starting at the extreme western corner and increasing to the eastGraves: 493C-576

    Section 16 Select (General)Checking of inscriptions was completed in July 1995Rows: 1-42Graves: 2041-2617This section starts behind the Irish Memorial and adjacent to the Catholic vaults, with row numbers increasing from west to east. Section 16 Ordinary divides this section into two parts.

    Section 16 Ordinary (General)Checking of inscriptions was completed in October 1995Rows: 1-42Graves: 1905A-2996Commences at the eastern end of the section, adjacent to the vaults and between the two parts of Section 16 Select.

  • Waverley Section 1 (Anglican)This section is on the right as you enter the main gate of the cemetery. The graves start behind a monument, adjoining the office, to those who died in a submarine mine explosion at Middle Head. Rows run from west to east.

  • Waverley Section 2 (Anglican & Catholic)This section can be found immediately opposite the main gate. Some rows run from west to east while others run west to east as outlined below.

    Sections 2 to 5 were originally separated by roads but these have now been closed and used for further graves. As a result, the boundaries of this section are less obvious on the ground than indicated by the maps, which are indicative only and not to scale.

    Section 2 Special D (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in March 1992Rows: 1Graves: 1-7Located opposite the main gate. A single row of graves facing the road, it runs from the corner along the road.

    Section 2 Vaults (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in March 1992Rows: 1-29Plots: 8-319The first two vaults in this section are next to the end of Section Special D, facing the road. The section then runs from west to east (behind Section Special D). The end of the section, Row 29, can be found next to a path and approximately opposite Collingwood St (located outside the cemetery).

    Section 2 Select (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in March 1994Rows: 1-19Graves: 851-1078This section runs from east to west Row 1 starts adjacent to the last row of vaults. Note that the section does not end at the western perimeter of the section, but approximately two-thirds of the way along the vaults.

    Section 2 Special (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in April 1994Rows: not numberedGraves: 1B-45These graves are located around the southern perimeter of the section adjacent to the end of Section 2 Ordinary. Graves 1B-9C are in the eastern corner adjacent to the vaults.

    Section 2 Ordinary (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in June 1994Rows: 2-41Graves: 1A-985AAThe rows in this section are numbered from west to east and are adjacent to Section 2 Select.

    Section 2 Lawn B (Anglican)Checking of inscriptions was completed in April 1992Rows: 1Graves: 1-15Located at the western end of Section 2 starting adjacent to the road and Row 1 of the vaults.

    Section 2 Special E (Catholic)Checking of inscriptions was completed in April 1994Rows: 1-14Graves: 1-42This section runs between Section 2 Vaults and Section 5 Vaults starting from the northern perimeter and running inwards.
