2 About WaveLab Steinberg’s WaveLab 8 is the world’s leading audio editing and mastering application, used by professional mastering studios, broadcast and project studios, musicians and hobby producers alike. And thanks to its versatility, WaveLab is also being used in further areas such as forensic analysis and audio restoration.

With the release of WaveLab 7 back in 2010 Steinberg opened a new chapter in the long product history with WaveLab 7 being the first version ever available on the Mac platform. Alongside a completely new user interface, many new features such as a restoration suite and DDP image support have been introduced — all based on a modern software framework and fresh programming code.

WaveLab 8 is build up on this foundation and dramatically raises the bar in all aspects of professional mastering, editing and broadcast metering with exciting new features and improvements. Any WaveLab user working in a professional mastering studio, project studio or broadcast situation will welcome the new WaveLab 8 speaker management system. Being able to switch between several loudspeaker setups with no latency helps you to ensure best audio quality on speakers with even different characteristics. Speaking of audio quality — WaveLab 8 is the perfect choice to take your audio material to the next level. Not only Voxengo’s acclaimed CurveEQ with frequency matching technology allows for dedicated sound manipulation, but Steinberg’s TubeCompressor and Brickwall Limiter provide that extra punch your music and speech productions deserve. Mastering professionals will value the high-end MBIT+ Dithering plug-in quality-made by iZotope Inc., adding warm and natural flair to every nuance of your recordings. To complement the set of quality enhancement tools, WaveLab 8’s Audio Montage now allows for the import of audio files in any sample rate, which enables working at highest quality levels, no matter what the target format is. WaveLab now also features a Transport Panel as well as the new SuperClip concept that makes working with different files in parallel more than easy. Not to forget the extended meta-data support, which allows for the inclusion of important audio file information in formats such as ID3 v2, Broadcast Wave and iXML.

9 WaveLab 8: New features at a glance

Speaker management system During the mastering process it is essential to monitor the pre-master on different speaker setups in order to ensure constant quality level. The good news is that WaveLab 8 comes with an integrated speaker management system, allowing you to switch between up to eight speaker setups for playback and record monitoring, including individual gain control for each output. In addition, the brand-new VST Audio Connection dialog allows you to set up individual output configurations for the respective loudspeaker channels and to conveniently adjust your input channels.

EBU-compliant loudness metering and processing The loudness war is over and dynamic sound is getting widespread — that's why WaveLab 8 features a full-fledged EBU R128-compliant loudness metering and processing solution. Besides the measurement of momentary, short term and integrated values displayed on dedicated scales, WaveLab also contains a zoomable loudness view that visualizes all values as a clear graph. Steinberg’s Loudness, Pan and Batch Normalizer tools have been extended meet the requirements of EBU standards. If that wasn’t enough, the powerful Global Analysis now also provides EBU-compliant measurement. Of course, WaveLab 8 also features TruePeak support, which is reflected in many of WaveLab’s tools, e.g. normalizers and various analysis functions.

iZotope MBIT+ master dither Quality first for WaveLab 8 — the new MBIT+ dither plug-in made by the specialists of iZotope provides the finest wordlength reduction algorithms available, allowing you to effectively convert and dither to 24, 20, 16, 12 or 8 bits. The advanced dithering process also reduces quantization distortion with minimal perceived noise. What you get is a smooth conversion and a major audible improvement.

Quality made: Voxengo CurveEQ, Brickwall Limiter and Tube Compressor WaveLab contains a plethora of plug-ins that take your audio files to perfection. WaveLab 8 goes a step further and adds thee more effects to your arsenal. The first is Voxengo's acclaimed CurveEQ. Thanks to its spectrum matching technology, this versatile plug-in perfectly suits the needs of mastering engineers. Master Transport Panel Stay in control — record, play, stop, loop, jog, shuttle, selections, markers and many other functions to speed up project navigation are now easily accessible via the new Master Transport Panel. Additionally, the Master Transport Panel features a status window that shows the time position, timecode, samples bars and beats.

Single window plug-in management and organization

Keep track of your plug-ins — WaveLab 8 introduces a plug-in chain window that hosts all inserted clip, track or master plug-ins in one single area. Now you can switch between different plug-ins with a single click. Also new in version 8 is the completely redesigned plug-in organization. The newly introduced plug-in settings dialog allows you to group and sort plug-ins by vendor, category and favorites, making it easy to manage your ever growing number of plug-ins.

Professional editing+ Making audio editing faster and more convenient has been the main premise for the creation of WaveLab's new editing tools. One example are the time-saving volume clip handles with raise selection option that allow you to adjust the level of individual regions of a clip in an instant. Plus, several new trim and split options have been added, such as the extended AutoSplit function. What's more, you can now process selected regions of your audio file using e.g. a plug-in chain with just a single command, making comparisons between different editings a straightforward matter. And the new auto-replay option automatically re-triggers the playback right after you've made an edit. In addition, there are more than a dozen further improvements that facilitate the editing process.

Extended Audio Montage environment The new SuperClip concept makes it easy to handle complex audio projects with a large number of clips by combining several clips into one SuperClip and still giving you the chance to edit these clips in internal sub-montages. Also new to WaveLab 8 is the Master Plug-In Section that enables you to save a plug-in chain locally with each single montage for total recall. To further enhance the quality of the mastering process, WaveLab 8 allows you to simultaneously use audio files of different sample rates. The target sample rate is chosen at the end of the mastering process, which leads to best sounding results.

Add information about the artist, pictures, copyright, the engineer’s name, date and many more to your audio files and provide your clients with valuable information. WaveLab 8 even allows for automatic creation of metadata. Besides, you can add further technical information, enabling a flawless workflow with the CD manufacturer.

Studio-grade Brickwall Limiter and Tube Compressor WaveLab Elements 8 highlights two premium plug-ins to push your audio projects to perfection. First, Tube Compressor, known from the Cubase music production system, not only shapes the dynamics of your signals very precisely but also colors them with a beautifully warm and rich compression. Second, the Brickwall Limiter prevents your recordings from unwanted peaks and keeps the audio signal from passing the threshold — perfect for achieving the hottest signal without clipping the recording’s maximum level.

Elements editing+ For WaveLab Elements 8 we focused on improving the overall user experience in order to make things faster and easier. Among the list of new features is the new auto-replay function, which automatically re-triggers the playback right after an edit has been made. And of course there are many other improvements such as a simplified envelope selection to speed up the editing process.

Transport Panel Take control — we've consolidated functions such as record, play, stop, loop, jog, shuttle, selections, markers or play-to and play-from in the new Transport Panel. This makes moving within your WaveLab Elements project a whole lot faster. In addition, the Transport Panel features a status window that shows the time position, timecode, samples, bars and beats.

High-resolution 16-bit float waveform zooming WaveLab Elements 8 is a big step forward when it comes to ultra-precise editing operations. The new version contains waveform zooming in 16-bit float quality, making it possible to cut and trim clips or insert fades with highest accuracy.

Audio Montage highlights Making its debut in WaveLab Elements 8, the Master Plug-In Section enables you to save plug-in chains with each single Audio Montage for total recall of your project. To further enhance the quality of the working process, WaveLab Elements now enables you to import audio files at highest sample rate and choose the target format (e.g. CD burning) at the end of the mastering process. This way you are able to work in best resolution throughout the editing and mastering process, giving you great sounding results at the end.

Metadata support for a broad number of formats WaveLab Elements 8 contains metadata support for file formats such as ID3 v2 and CART. Add information about the artist, pictures, copyright, engineer’s name, date and many more to your audio files and provide your clients with valuable extra information. Plus, you can attach further technical information to your files enabling a flawless working process with the CD manufacturer.

Track effects, panning parameter and improved effect section Fine-tune your tracks with utmost flexibility — the whole effect section has been renewned for WaveLab Elements 8. While track effects give you the ability to apply effects individually, the new pan parameter allows you control the panning for each single track. Also new on board are the track and master gain controls, with the latter having a pre and post fader option. In addition, you can quickly transfer the whole plug-in chain from the master section to the effect section to use them on individual tracks.

Get to grips in no time: improved help system Thanks to the overall improved help system, you can start using WaveLab Elements 8 right away. Besides an improved “What’s this?” function that provides answers when just hovering the mouse pointer over a program area, the help viewer is now a fully integrated part of WaveLab Elements that makes finding an answer not only faster but also more convenient.

50+ further improvements If that wasn't enough, we've added more than 50 improvements in different program areas. Besides an updated burning engine for providing reliable burning processes on the latest operation

systems, WaveLab Elements 8 contains new recording options, enabling you to assign custom audio outputs for monitoring each recorded channel. Plus, the recording dialog has a new Mix With Playback button for mixing the monitored audio signal with the playback signal. This way, it is now possible to toggle between the auditioning of the recorded signal and the playback signal. And it doesn’t stop here — there are even more enhancements waiting to be discovered.

11 WaveLab 8: New features in detail Speaker management system During the mastering process it is essential to check the pre-master on different loudspeaker setups to ensure constant quality level. WaveLab 8 comes with an integrated speaker management system, allowing you to switch between up to eight loudspeaker setups, definable within the newly arranged VST Audio Connections menu. There's no hidden processing involved and your audio signal is always kept clean for final dithering. Of course, any of the eight speakers setups includes individual gain for each output, allowing you to balance different speaker characteristics against each other. The new VST Audio Connection dialog allows you to set up individual output configurations for the respective loudspeaker channels, enabling A/B/C/D comparison of audio files with zero latency. Needless to say, all input channels can also be set in this menu.

EBU-compliant loudness metering and mastering solution EBU-R128 is a well-defined method to measure and normalize loudness levels based on internationally agreed specific guidelines set by the European Broadcast Union (EBU). WaveLab 8 includes a comprehensive set of tools for loudness analysing and normalising, making it possible to be compliant with broadcast-requirements adopted by a growing number of TV and radio stations.

WaveLab 8 offers measurement of momentary, short term and integrated loudness values displayed on a configurable, dedicated precision scale. It also shows the Loudness Range (LRA) to help controlling the loudness distribution. The latter ensures that the audio track loudness measurement isn’t influenced by single (loud) sound events. In addition, WaveLab 8 comes with TruePeak indication via a virtual LED.

All loudness values are represented clearly in the Loudness Graph overview. Each Workspace is dedicated to a specific job within WaveLab and provides a rich toolset for the respective tasks.

Audio File and Audio Montage Workspace are divided into several areas such as the Tab area,the Master section and a space where the audio file or audio file montage can be inserted. Alongside the Tab functions, the Batch Processor Workspace offers another space where effects for processing can be inserted and grouped and a section where audio files can be loaded for processing. The Podcast Workspace consists of a separate WaveLab area incorporating all necessary functions to create and upload podcasts to the internet.

Each Workspace is fully customizable, which makes it easy to adapt the user interface to individual requirements and workflows. Windows can be resized, moved and saved as a window layout for later recall. WaveLab also comes with a wide range of function tabs that can be positioned within the new Tab area and provide quick access to the most important tools.

Audio File Workspace The Audio File Workspace is the perfect place for sample-accurate audio editing and high-quality analysis. Audio files can be recorded via WaveLab’s record dialog or can simply be loaded into the file area of that workspace. Once inserted, all the powerful WaveLab editing functions are available to analyze, edit and process audio material. Several function tabs and options, such as marker management or the File Browser tab, are readily accessible and streamline the workflow.

In addition, the Audio File Workspace is also predestined for analyzing audio material by using WaveLab’s high-quality analyzing tools. Be it spectroscope, oscilloscope or VU metering — all those premium tools are just a click away. And it doesn’t stop here. The extensive error correction area is also available as a single, space-saving tab.

Audio Montage workspace The Audio Montage workspace allows the user to create a compilation from multiple audio files. In addition, this workspace allows real-time fades and cross fades, clip-based effects, several edit-tools and global effect plug-ins within the Master Section.

A dedicated, clip based tool window, including Edit, Cue Point, Envelope, Fade In/Out and Colors sections, facilitates the entire operation within the Audio Montage and speeds up the workflow dramatically.

Batch Processor workspace The Batch Processor workspace is one of the most powerful tools within WaveLab. The Batch Processor workspace is divided into three main areas: On the left side, the process chain can be fueled with plug-ins, such as the new VST 3 effects, and further WaveLab functions and processors. The right window is reserved for the insertion of audio files. In the section below, the user can define output paths, formats and include external tools.

Podcast workspace The Podcast workspace is a complete online publishing toolset and allows for creating and publishing podcasts in the internet with ease. The simple and intuitive interface lets the user produce podcasts from A to Z without ever quitting WaveLab. Built-in FTP capabilities, RSS 2.0 support and time-saving templates — the Podcast Workspace provides everything needed to work with this internet standard. And with an iTunes account at hand, it is even possible to publish podcasts on iTunes, including the selection of specific iTunes categories.

WaveLab Control

For even more convenience, the WaveLab Control section lets the user group a freely selectable range of analysis tools in a dedicated space, which can be detached and moved to another display.

phase correlation tool and bit-metering. Individual combinations of analyzing tools can be saved and recalled at any time, enabling the usage of several analyzing settings for different purposes.

The WaveLab Control window can also be placed on a second screen, allowing the main screen to be entirely used for other purposes. Of course, WaveLab Control can be perfectly adapted to any screen size by simply adjusting the window’s height and width.

High-class restoration suite

Restoration suite made by the specialists of Sonnox Clicks, crackles and buzzes — with the Sonnox Restoration Suite unwanted noise is history. WaveLab boasts a whole collection of high-end restoration tools, enabling the user to accurately and effectively restore impaired audio recordings. Developed by the Sonnox specialists, DeNoiser, DeBuzzer and DeClicker are capable of removing even the harshest noises without affecting the ambience of the original. Advanced algorithms, a straightforward user interface and detailed visual feedback make this suite the first choice for the most demanding audio restoration works.

Sonnox DeNoiser The Sonnox DeNoiser delivers high performance noise removal and is best suited to eliminate constant background noises of different colors. The DeNoiser offers Input and Output metering, Sensitivity and Attenuation faders to determine the intensity of

de-noising as well as two different tracking methods, depending on the noise frequencies in the audio material. DeNoiser also features a High-Frequency knob for adjusting the frequency range as well as a graphical representation of the processing intensity and frequency range.

Sonnox DeClicker DeClicker is a true all-rounder. The plug-in contains three sections with individual thresholds and controls: DePop, DeClick and DeCrackle. Whether it is a pop-sound in a voice recording, a click sound or unsightly crackles — DeClicker has the right answer to eliminate such disturbing sounds.

Sonnox DeBuzzer Beat buzzes with the highly effective DeBuzzer tool. DeBuzzer removes humming noises like the mains hum with ease — and without affecting the original material too much. The plug-in features a large wheel for precisely selecting the humming frequencies. Adjustments down to a hundredth hertz can be done by pushing the Fine Adjust button. It’s also possible to adjust the sensitivity and the attenuation as well as the reduction mode (humming/buzzing), depending on the respective type of noise. Two further tracking modes allow the user to adapt the tracking method to the existing audio material.

Connect to the core of WaveLab WaveLab comes with a comprehensive remote control support, perfectly integrated with your CI, CMC series and CC121 controller hardware. Adjust plug-in parameters, volume levels or the stereo pan — faster and more convenient than before. Enjoy using the transport controls of the CC121 or the CMC series — everything’s at hand.

Best of all, WaveLab also supports the AI knob technology, allowing you to seamlessly control all program parameters with one central knob directly from your Steinberg controller hardware.

Of course, WaveLab is also ready to be used with up to three other MIDI-based control surfaces supporting the MIDI learn function, which lets you easily assign the controls of your hardware to a specific parameter within the application. You can control these parameters with modifiers such as the keyboard or MIDI pedals. And the comprehensive Control Maps editor allows for even more detailed individual adjustments, giving you hands-on control within seconds. This can be done even with iPad controllers (by using MIDI bridge).

Speed up your production process WaveLab features an enhanced DDP file workflow. Once you have created a new DDP file, WaveLab automatically offers a button that let’s you import the DDP file directly into the Audio Montage area for further adjustments.

After importing DDP files, WaveLab now labels clips and markers with more appropriate names, allowing you to easily identify the imported files. Last but not least, WaveLab brings enhanced file quality by offering an option to verify the DDP file checksum.
