Waterford City, Ireland is home to the House of Waterford Crystal, where skilled Waterford Crystal artisans carry on longstanding traditions of mouth blowing, hand finishing, sculpting and engraving.
The rich Waterford heritage spans centuries, with origins that date to 18th century Ireland. Through the years, our reputation for design and innovation has elevated the Waterford brand to a position of status as the world’s finest crystal.
The House of Waterford Collection pays tribute to the skilful hands of Waterford Crystal’s most masterful craftsmen. These crystal pieces are created to satisfy the imagination, pursue an inspiration or simply master the silvery sparkling medium that has challenged artists for centuries.
F R E D C U RT I S
Our guest Artisan in 2015 is Fred Curtis. What started out as a summer job for 15-year-old Fred Curtis turned into a vocation, leading him to his current position as Master Sculptor and Designer at the House of Waterford Crystal and worldwide ambassador for the world’s most beloved crystal.
In 1971, Fred Curtis applied for a summer job at Waterford, and subsequently enrolled in a five year apprenticeship as a glass cutter. He qualified with distinction and achieved the status of Master Cutter in ten years.
His early experiments with sculpting little gifts for family and friends from solid pieces of discarded crystal did not go unnoticed and in 1986 he was asked to establish a new sculpting department at Waterford Crystal.
Over the years Fred designed and sculpted some of Waterford’s most beautiful trophies and presentation pieces for some of world’s most famous people, including Mother Theresa of Calcutta, US Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, golfing legend Greg Norman and actor Clint Eastwood to name just a few.
Fred continues to design and sculpt crystal pieces of extraordinary beauty. He enjoys the freedom of expression at Waterford that allows him to create individual works of art in crystal that further enhance his expertise as a true Master.
During the 2015 tour events Fred will demonstrate his outstanding crystal cutting skills.

The House of Waterford Crystal pays homage to the Four Seasons by celebrating the four key seasonal moments
of the year: the Summer and Winter Solstices and the Autumnal and Vernal (Spring) Equinoxes. Four new
and unique Waterford wedge cutting patterns poetically represent the passing of seasons in a series of cut crystal
bowls and vases, as well as one grand vase featuring all four patterns. Each season is represented by a unique cutting
pattern evocative of the spirit of the season.

With their iridescent feathers and decadent beauty inspiring decorative imitations both abstract and literal, Peacocks have been
a favourite ornamental motif for millennia. A flying bird of the pheasant variety, the name peacock refers to the male of the species, known for his extravagant spotted tail feathers. Peacocks have long
been a symbol of wealth, beauty and rebirth since ancient times and they remain a popular motif today, perhaps because they can be
beautiful as both a graphic image and as a representation of nature.
Designer John Connolly was inspired by the graphic pattern of the proud peacock’s feathers to create a new deep cutting pattern that
is realised in a new collection at The House of Waterford Crystal in Ireland. Oversized shapes are lavishly adorned with signature wedge
cuts, deep thumb-print cuts, and ring cuts, to create a sparkling treasure that is as beautiful as its namesake.

The “Georgian Era” of British history is the period in history spanning the reigns of the first four Hanoverian kings who were all named George, covering the period 1714 to 1830. The term
“Georgian” is typically used in context of social history, architecture and décor. This was the golden age of the first Waterford Crystal factory, providing superb crystal to royalty and nobility alike. It is this period that is the inspiration for many of the patterns that are
still popular today.
Designer John Connolly was motivated by the shapes and the many cut patterns that were used at that time when he developed the
Georgian Windows collection. Featuring flat cuts, wedge cuts and ring cuts, these classic pieces carefully tell the story of that era. The House of Waterford Crystal, located nearly in the same spot as the
original factory, keeps this historic tradition alive for today.

Colleen Vase 30cmDesigned and made at the House of Waterford Crystal
House of Waterford Crystal designer Fred Curtis draws inspiration from Miroslav Havel’s famous Colleen pattern, which celebrated it’s 60th anniversary in 2013. The name Colleen, from the Irish Cailin, is one of the most traditional and beautiful names for an Irish girl or woman. Miroslav Havel was inspired by the romance of Ireland to use Georgian designs to create Colleen, a crystal pattern that has stood the test of time and serves as the inspiration for Fred Curtis’ 30cm vase.
Fred CurtisFred began his career with crystal by chance at the tender age of sixteen. After working for a decade at Waterford, his unique skill as a designer and sculptor could not be denied and he soon became the founding member of Waterford’s flagship sculpting department, working with Miroslav Havel. Fred enjoys the freedom of expression that allows him to create individual works of art in crystal that will further enhance his expertise as a true Master of his craft.

The Wild Atlantic Way (Irish: Slí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin) is a tourism trail on the west coast of Ireland. The 2500 km (1553 mile)
driving route passes through nine counties and three provinces, stretching from County Donegal’s Inishowen Peninsula to Kinsale,
County Cork, on the Celtic Sea Coast. Along the route, there are places and attractions which have been designated as points
of interest for travellers.
The House of Waterford Crystal designers have created a new range of modern gift and barware that captures the power and dynamism
of this magnificent place, home to some of the most scenic attractions on the Emerald Isle. Long curving wedge cuts combine
with sparkling caro to create a relief pattern that is as powerful as the pounding surf. We happily salute our native Ireland, the home and
creative centre of Waterford Crystal.

The Colleen pattern by Waterford is characterised by an ornate pattern of intersecting and broad vertical cuts and is showcased at its finest in this stunning flared Colleen Bowl 30cm.
Each year a House of Waterford Crystal designer is selected to create a unique Artisan piece available exclusively at Waterford Crystal Artisan Events around
the globe. Fred Curtis was inspired by the numerous ancient stone circles found about the lush green landscape of Ireland. Cut deep into the crystal are a series of swerve cuts filled with traditional Waterford diamond cuts representing the
massive stones that make up the circle. Rosette cuts at the top and bottom represent the sunlight from the Summer and Winter Solstices, events that held
special significance for prehistoric people.
The largest of these is Grange Stone Circle in County Limerick, which was built around 2100 BC. You walk into the circle through the pillar stones and are
transported to a timeless and beautiful place, one that lends itself to a mystical experience. Legend has it that it was created by Aine, the Sun Goddess and
Fairy Queen. It contains a cave that is said to be the secret entrance to Tir Na Nog, land of eternal youth, where you never grow old, leaves never fall from
trees and flowers bloom all year long.
