SEVEN PRINCIPLES FOR CREATING A WATER CONSERVING LANDSCAPE

1. GOOD LANDSCAPE PLANNING AND DESIGN-Consideraspectsofyourpropertysuchasbuildingfootprint,utilizinghardscapeareas,slopeanddrainage,areasforturfasneeded,andattractivelookingplantsthatrequirelimitedwateruse.

2. LOW WATER USE PLANTS-Manyattractivenativeplantcultivarsthatarewell-suitedforthenaturalenvironmentalconditionsareavailableatlocalnurserysandgardencenters.Otherdroughttolerantnon-nativespeciesmaybeappropriateiftolerantoftemperatureextremesandotherconditionssuchassoiltype,sunrequirements,anddiseaseresistance.Usemoderatewaterusingplantsnearthehomeandheavilytraffickedareasandtransitiontoverylowwateruseplantsnearpropertyperimeterandinlessvisibleareas.

3. APPROPRIATE TURF AREAS-Turfhasitspurposeinthelandscape,butshouldbeusedefficientlyandeffectively.Considerhowtheturfareawillbeusedwhenselectingaturfspecies.Bermudagrasscanbemaintainedatalowerheight,makingitidealforhightrafficareasthatwillbeusedforplayareasandrecreation.BuffaloGrass,BlueGramaGrassorasimilarnativemixisabetterwaterconservingalternativeforturfareasthatwillnotbeasintenselyused.
