    How Do We Measure Flow?

    Simple but effective

    Reading existing meters

    Bucket and stopwatch

    More complex, Flowmeter Pump Curves

If it isnt measured, it cant be controlled!

Site Water Balance - Does it Balance?

Water Balance should aim to achieve 95% accountability

    Accounting For Discrepancies

Method Reason for inconsistency or solution

Walking Round Site Incorrectly set valves or control systems, leaks, broken valves pipes or other equipment

Discussions with staff Previously unidentified or cross connections, orunidentified take-up by product

Employee Suggestion schemes Excessive or unnecessary use

No Blame Brainstorming Unknown or unauthorised use

Examine previous water and If changes cannot be explained by processeffluent bills modifications, then investigate further, e.g. relate

water to output, i.e. m per unit of production, department or area

If water Balance cannot achieve 95% accountability examination of thefollowing areas/reasons may assist improving the balance?

Identifying Opportunities toReduce Water use - Input

Starting with the largest water use, consider foreach use shown on the water balance:

Is the process/activity really necessary? Is it necessary to use water for theprocess/activity or could there be a cost-effectivealternative? Why does the process/activity use so much water? Could a lower quality of water be used, e.g.recycled water?

Can water be recover and re-used elsewhere? Is the use authorised and legal?

Identifying Opportunities toReduce Water use - Effluent

Is it necessary to produce this wastewater

effluent? Is clean water going down the drain and, if so,why? Is the discharge authorised and legal? Can the wastewater/effluent be re-used in a

process or used for lower grade duties, e.g.cleaning? Would it be cost-effective to treat thewastewater/effluent on-site for re-use?

Starting with the largest wastewater/effluent flow, considerfor each flow shown on the water balance:
