*A conscientious objector is one who is opposed to serving in the armed forces and/or bearing arms on the grounds of
moral or religious principles. Conscientious objectors opposed to serving in the military are still required to register
with the Selective Service System and will be placed in the Selective Service Alternative Service Program. Length of
service in the program will equal the amount of time a man would have served in the military, usually 24 months.

Mission Moment
Presented by the Missions and Service Commission
Brethren Volunteer Service is a full-time volunteer program that places volunteers in a one or two-year
assignment in the United States and some locations around the world. This ministry of the Church of the
Brethren has been a major program in this Christian denomination since 1948.
Through BVS people give their time and skills to help a world in need. Volunteers work at issues greater than
themselves, recognizing that their efforts may not immediately solve deep-rooted problems, yet everyone can be
part of the on-going work to advocate for justice, work for peace, serve human need, and care for creation.
Sharing God's love through acts of service
Volunteers bring hope, offer food and shelter, and build relationships. BVS seeks persons willing to act on their
commitment and values. They challenge individuals to offer themselves, their time, and their talents for work
that is both demanding and rewarding.
Volunteers receive room, board, medical insurance, transportation to project, and a monthly allowance of $100-
$150. In most cases, educational loans may be deferred. Depending on the project, volunteers may live alone,
with a family, or in a group situation.
Each volunteer must bring a willingness to serve. Working towards peace and justice and meeting the needs of
humanity and the environment calls out for persons dedicated to service.
You can make a difference!
Advocating Justice: BVS is committed to working with projects and volunteers who advocate justice.
Providing reliable legal services for immigrants, practicing and teaching restorative justice, supporting
conscientious objectors, and speaking up on behalf of those who have been and continue to be systematically
oppressed are just a few ways BVS goes about the work of justice.
6
Working for Peace: The Church of the Brethren has gifted us with a tradition of pacifism and peacemaking, and
for BVS, this is a lively, active part of their faith. Volunteers lobby congress, practice mediation and teach
nonviolent conflict transformation. Many of their projects are in places where war and violence have torn
communities apart. BVS works with organizations committed to rebuilding relationship and making peace.
Serving Human Need: On any given day, BVS volunteers can be found providing hospitality for families of
people in prison, serving in local soup kitchens and homeless shelters, building houses for those without shelter,
and walking in solidarity with sisters and brothers living with mental illness.
Caring for Creation: Just as our relationships with one another calls us to work for justice and peace, so too
does our relationship with the earth call us into active service. During orientation, volunteers learn to live lightly
on the earth, consuming less and re-using more. Volunteers serve across the world with organizations dedicated
to reducing pollution, fighting global warming, introducing responsible agricultural practices, planting trees,
and reducing fuel consumption. Whether it is living simply and using our portion of the earth's resources
responsibly or working with people committed to changing the ways we relate to the earth, BVS takes caring
for creation seriously.
How to Volunteer
Brethren Volunteer Service works to place volunteers in a project where their skills are used and the need is
greatest. They expect service to contribute to the goals of BVS. They see BVS as sharing God's love through
acts of service.
The art of serving is a process of both giving and receiving. We need to be able to freely give of ourselves and
freely receive what others can offer and teach us. It is the hope that this art will move beyond a one to two-year
program and will become a lifestyle that continues after BVS.
The acceptance process can be started any time. An application should be submitted electronically and is
available on their website at www.brethrenvolunteerservice.org. Submitting an application lets them know of
your serious interest in BVS, but it is not a formal commitment to volunteer.
Once an applicant has been accepted into BVS, the next step is to sign the volunteer covenant. The covenant
indicates formal commitment to volunteer and abide by BVS' guidelines. This document details the expected
attitude and behavior of volunteers while serving under Brethren Volunteer Service.
Applicants must then choose an orientation to attend. Unlike other programs, most volunteers in BVS will not
know where they will serve until they attend orientation.
If you are interested in volunteering call the BVS office at (800) 323-8039 or e-mail them
at [email protected] with any questions. If you have not heard from BVS staff within a few days, please follow
up your application with a call or e-mail.

Staying….
…connected Through this time of uncertainty, frustration, and separation, we have all been dealing
with the struggles and feelings that go along with such a drastic change to daily life.
The pastor, myself, and the church leadership have experienced this both personally
and in attempting to do what is necessary while remaining safe. Even as worship
services begin again, we will continue the online messages and phone calls in an
attempt to keep the congregation connected. Please, if there is anything you need,
don’t hesitate to reach out! The church isn’t just a building – we are here for you!
Online resources can be found through our Facebook account – Maple Spring Cob,
the church website www.maplespringcob.org, and YouTube Maple Spring COB. If
you have any difficulty in finding these resources, please contact me at the church
office. The Water Cups and simplified Dew Drops continue to be uploaded onto our
website. These items can also be emailed or direct mailed to you if you’d like –
please just let me know!
May we all feel God’s unbelievable blessings more powerfully through this time.
