Water is sucked into the cylinder through a check valve on the up-stroke, and the piston valve is held closed by the weight of water above it

Simultaneously the water above the piston is propelled out of the pump

On the down-stroke, the lower check valve is held closed by both its weight and water pressure, while the similar valve in the piston is forced open as the trapped water is displaced through the piston ready for the next up-stroke
