WATER DESALINATION REPORTThe international weekly for desalination and advanced water treatment since 1965
Company News'GREEN' RO ANTISCALANT SET FOR LAUNCHBWA Water Additives will announce a new biodegradableantiscalant for RO systems at the Perth IDA World Congressin September. The new product - Flocon 885 - is consideredto be an excellent calcium carbonate and barium sulfatescale inhibitor.
Although specific regulations are still being developed, there are two industry-accepted standards for measuringbiodegradation, the 28-day OECD 306 for seawater and the35-day OECD 302b for fresh water. Flocon 885 is readilydegradable in seawater with an OECD biodegradabilityrating of 63 percent and inherently biodegradable in freshwater with a biodegradability rating of 44 percent.
Company president Paul Turgeon told WDR, "Thereis growing global awareness for the environmentallyresponsible use of chemicals in water treatment, especiallyapplications like RO where the concentrate is often untreatedand returned to the ecosystem."
The product is certified to ANSIINSF Standard 60 for use inreverse osmosis systems producing potable water.
IN BRIEFNanoIDO has officially launched its new QuantumFlux ROmembrane technology, which it says will deliver more waterwith up to 20 percent less energy. The spiral-wound, thin filmnanocomposite membrane elements are also said to maintain"best-in-class" salt rejection. The membranes are cast, coatedand rolled at NanoH20's fully integrated manufacturingplant in EI Segundo (Los Angeles), California.
Voltea was awarded €1.2 million ($1.74 million) by theDutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment's SmallBusiness Innovation Research program to further developits CapDI capacitive deionization technology, for use inrecycling wastewater for agricultural use. The award followsthe successful completion of a €50,000 ($72,620) feasibilitystudy. Voltea was the 2010 GWI/WDR Technology Idol.
On the eve of its rainy season, Florida's Key West hasregistered its driest recorded February-through-April periodto date. To meet its potable water requirements, the FloridaKeys Aqueduct Authority (FKAA) has operated its 6 MGD(22,710 m3/d) Florida City BWRO plant at full capacity. Theplant was first put in operation in January 2010. Its productwater is blended with an additional 13 MGD (49,205 mvd)of Biscayne Aquifer water and pumped through a 130-mile(208km) long transmission main to all of South Florida.
China's Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Ltd hasinstalled a 65,000 m3/d (17.2 MGD) UF plant using ingewatertechnologies Multibore membrane modules. The plantfilters water from the Zhujiang River for use in producingboiler feedwater for steam generation at its 730,000 T/yrcorrugated paper plant in Huangyong, Guangdong Province.
H2O Innovation announced that Vikas Garud, its seniorapplication and process engineer, and his former colleagueAshok Gadgil, have won the European Inventor Award2011 in the Non-European Countries category for theirUV WaterWorks patent that provides a cost-effective, easy-to-use solution for water purification.
