Check out our ‘ready reckoner’ in the first column of our liner listings (opposite) which shows the resulting pond size of each of our liners using this formula. Choice of pond shape and depth is up to you. We recommend that a part of the pond should be at leat 1m deep (3’ 3”) to provide an area where fish can keep warmer overwinter.Larger and deeper ponds are easier to maintain. Most of our customers surveyed wished they had gone bigger!

Pond Liners

EPDM rubberSame physical characteristics as Butyl but with significant cost savings. Lifetime guarantee (20yrs on 140sqm plus), 0.75mm thick. We find that this synthetic rubber now outsells butyl.

All successful pond projects start with a good waterproof pond liner. A pond liner provides a watertight membrane to stop pond water seeping away. Underlay

We recommend that all pond liners are underlaid as extra protection for your liner. It helps to prevent root penetration and punctures from small stones/debris. Underlay supplied matches the sqm of our liners.

“Basic“ is a budget underlay, providing a good level of protection. Particularly suitable for small ponds or where sand is used as a primary barrier.

Pond Liners

Concrete Pond AccessoriesConcrete ponds are finished with a layer of render to create a smooth surface. You then need to seal this later to stop the water getting in and the lime seeping out.

You need 3 coats of clear G4 when you apply it to a pond. This is a total of 550g per square metre. Example lets say the pond is 3m x 2m and 1m deep.

1. Work out the area of the bottom (in example 3x2m = 6sqm)

2. Find the area of one of the sides. Then multiply by 2 to cover both sides. (in example sides 1 = 2x1 = 2sqm x 2 = 4sqm)

Solids handling pumps are often described in different terms such as ‘Filter Pumps’ or ‘dirty water pumps’. What they are designed to do is to pump dirty water 24/7 to a filter and/or waterfall. Solid particles are able to pass through the large gaps in the pump outer strainer cage and the tough pump impellor can push these particles out.

How to select the right size pump for your pondFlow rateThis is the power of flow or how much water the pump will move. - catalogue shows this as ‘Max Flow LPH’ Abbreviation stands for Litres Per Hour (LPH) and the larger your pond the higher flow you will need.

Flow requirementsA typical goldfish pondkeeper should aim to turn the water over once every two hours. A heavily stocked/koi pond should be turned over every hour.

Example: Pond Size 4x3m and 1m deep (13’x10’x3’). Maximum pond volume if rectangular with no steps = 4x3x1000 = 12000 Litres (2643 gallons).

Guideline pump would be 6000lph (1321 gallons per hour). For a koi pond a 12000lph pump could be chosen.

Pumping UphillPumps lose pressure when they pump uphill as they have to work against gravity. Typically a pump may be required to power a waterfall of 1m (3’ 4”) and these reduced flow rates have been listed for easy reference. Pond Filtration

Filtration is the process by which your pond is cleaned of impurities. With modern filters there are three major stages:

Ultra-Violet Clarifier (UVC)The UVC subjects the pond water to UV radiation. This means that microscopic single-cell algae flocculate (stick together). The resultant large particle pieces are picked up by filter foams and prevented from re-entering the pond. This prevents your pond looking green (like pea soup).

Mechanical FiltrationPond debris such as fish waste and dead pond plant particles are caught in mechanical barriers - typically foam. These foams are often graduated to catch even the smallest pieces.

Biological FiltrationFinally pond water will often pass through a bed of bio-media. This material will typically have a multi-surface appearance (eg, flocor or Kaldnes) on which friendly bacteria thrive. These bacteria will break down Ammonia, which is caused by dead and decaying organic matter, into Nitrite. A different type of bacteria

then breaks this dangerous Nitrite down to Nitrate and will be absorbed by plants as they grow.

Which one is for me?Filters are sold by the size of the pond they are designed to serve. We have indicated a ‘Pond size’ next to each filter which shows how the maximum pond volume the model will serve under ‘normal' conditions (eg, average goldfish stock, semi-shade position, plenty of plants).

Main types of pond filters available:

B) Pressure FiltersA) Flow-through Filters C) Koi Filters

The traditional ‘Box’ filter sits pondside or at the top of a waterfall. Pond water is pushed into one end and returns via gravity from the other. These filters are generally larger and provide a massive area of filtration media to cope with larger ponds.

A more modern approach is to house the filter media into an airtight cannister. The water enters the filter under pressure and leaves it under pressure allowing the filter to be hidden. Great for smaller ponds - these filters provide maximum landscaping opportunities.

Koi are large fish which produce a lot of waste and eat pond plants. Therefore a koi pond require larger, more sophisticated filtration.

Nature Ponds do not require

a filter. They do require patience

as they take longer to set

up (perhaps 18 months) and

you will need plenty of plants,

probably covering 2/3 of the

pond area. These plants

and pond bacteria will use

and digest any toxins left by fish

EasyPodEvolution Aqua produce the most modern pond filters on the market today. The Eazypod has been designed with small koi ponds in mind (10,000 litres - 2200 gallons) but it’s superior design can also be employed on ornamental/goldfish ponds. In this less demanding environment the Eazypod can handle up to 20,000 Litres (4400 gallons)

How it works . . . Regular Running

Dirty water enters filter and is drawn to the centre of the pod. Water passes through special Kaldness filter media which traps the dirt. Dirt gets stuck in the filter media - clean water returns to pond.

How it works . . . Cleaning

Switch off pond pump. Switch on air pump to agitate the filter media. Filter media bubbles up and dirt is dislodged. Run dirt to waste - Switch pump back on.

New Ponds Any new pond build should be left unstocked until at least six weeks have elapsed in order to allow the pond’s natural eco-balance to level. Beneficial ‘friendly’ bacteria will build up and breakdown any harmful toxins. A simple test kit will allow you to take water samples to measure ph (6-8 is ideal, 7 perfect), ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

Water Conditioners Tap water is toxic to fish as it contains chlorine and other chemicals. This should be neutralised with a treatment. Alternatively collected rainwater can be used. Bacterial boosters add friendly bacteria to the pond quickly - speeding up maturation


To keep fish successfully you need healthy water. The “settling down” phase of a new pond is particularly tricky as the biological cycle may take six weeks to six months to settle down.

A test kit will show if your pond ph value is near the perfect neutrality level (7). Incorrect levels can be due to filtration problems, immature ponds, inadequate planting, over feeding, over-stocking or rotting vegetation in the pond. If your fish are showing signs of distress or illness then we have a range of treatments to help nurse them back to health.

As your pond water makes its journey from your pump to its destination - via a UVC, filter or waterfall - it needs to be constrained by a network of hose. This hose should be fixed securely to the equipment using clips - this helps prevent any chance of the hose becoming loose or leaks affecting performance.
