ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

WaveRoller is also extremely well positioned interms of environmental conditions as follows:

>> The entire WaveRoller plant is positioned beneath the ocean surface and hence it is completely invisible. The typical depth for an installation is 10-25 meters.

>> WaveRoller plates follow the natural movement of the water.

>> The plant does not generate any noise to surface or shore.

>> WaveRoller has been designed using materials that are environmentally friendly and contain no hazardous substances.

The Surge project aims to access theWaveRoller device in a holistic mannerand consequently, besides theperformance, it includes anenvironmental program in order toevaluate some of the environmentalimpacts that it may have.

Two aspects, which were consideredprioritary considering the characteristicsof the device were selected:

1- Underwater noise generation during operation

2 - Alterations on macrobenthiccommunities and sediment characteristics.

Alterations on macrobenthic communities andsediment characteristics due to the installation ofthe Wave Roller device will probably have bothpositive and negative impacts on the sea bed areawhere it will be placed.

The demonstration unit to be installed is 42mlong and 18m wide which results in a footprintarea equal to 756m². Although this is aconsiderable size it is very small when comparedto the dimension of the adjacent coastal zone andmarine habitats.

The installation of the wave roller device on theseabed, may provide some important informationabout the interactions that are likely to occurbetween the device and surrounding marinebenthic communities, namely those that willpotentially colonize the equipment.

The monitoring program has two components:

(1) Collection of sediment samples in and around the deployment site. To fulfil such propose, 7 stations were selectedin the vicinity of the WaveRoller deploymentsite. The first campaigns were carried out inOctober 2010 and September 2011 (baselinestudy) and the samples collected are beingprocessed;

(2) Waveroller biotic colonization. The colonization of the device itself will beassessed by resorting to divers who will collectsurface samples by scraping a determined area(144 cm²) from 10 points on the base and wingof the WaveRoller.
