1 WatchManager SMS Guide

This guide details the use of the WatchManager SMS module

The SMS Module offers the following functionality:

- Automatic SMS to specified Customers on Alarm activation- SMS Message customization- Monitor Alarms using Cell based Panels- Technician testing SMS notification- Cellphone handset Panic generation

To use the SMS Module, you need the following:

1. WatchManager SMS Module2. GSM Modem (Wavecom or Maestro recommended)3. Standard or Data SIM card ("Pay as you go" not recommended)4. Available RS232 Com port on your PC

2 Setup SMS/GSM Modem

There are a few simple steps to follow in setting up your GSM Modem:

Disable PIN request on your SIM card

You must disable the PIN request on the SIM card you will be using. The easiest way to do this is toput the SIM card into a normal Cellphone and use the phone's Security Settings option to disable this.

Connect your GSM Modem

Identify an available COM port on PC ie. COM1, COM2 etc. Make a note of the COM number. Connect your GSM Modem using this available Com port.

If the WatchManager Front End Processor (FEP) is not running, activate it via the option in the ControlCentre. Log into the FEP.

· Select the "Receiver Settings" menu item in the FEP.

· Decide which RECEIVER NUMBER you wish to use for the GSM Modem

· Select change on your chosen Receiver Number.

· In the change Receiver Screen, select the "Receivers" button.

· You will see a list of different "protocols". From this list, highlight WAVECOM GSM MODEMand click SELECT

· Next, choose the Port Number for the Modem by clicking on the arrow next to the Portnumber.

· OPERATION field, make sure you choose G - GSM CHANNEL 1 from the list.

Your screen should look something like the one below:

Baud Rate

If you have altered the settings as shown above and your system does not communicate with theModem, it is possible the the Baud Rate is incorrect.

Sometimes Modem's are sent from the Manufacturer with a Baud Rate setting of 9600 but, othertimes, the Baud Rate is set to 115200.

If your Modem does not communicate, try changing the Baud Rate to 115200

Once you have this setup, click OK which will take you back to the list of Receivers. Now click CLOSE.

3 Test GSM Modem

Before you try and use the SMS functions, it is a good idea to test your GSM and make sure that it isfunctioning correctly. You can do this quite easily in the FEP.

Once you have restarted your FEP, log into the FEP and then select the "View Port I/O" menu item.This will open a window which allows you to view the communication of your various receivers. Fromthe top of this window, choose the Receiver Number corresponding to your GSM Modem.

If everything is setup correctly, you should see a screen similar to the one below:

If you do not see any "activity" in the "Receive Data" and "Transmit Data" blocks, then your PC is notcommunicating with the GSM Modem and you will need to resolve this before you can proceed anyfurther.

Baud Rate

If you have altered the settings as shown above and your system does not communicate with theModem, it is possible the the Baud Rate is incorrect.

Sometimes Modem's are sent from the Manufacturer with a Baud Rate setting of 9600 but, othertimes, the Baud Rate is set to 115200.

If your Modem does not communicate, try changing the Baud Rate to 115200

Send a Test SMS

To send a test SMS, click on the "Tools" menu option at the top of the FEP screen. From this menu,choose "Send Test SMS"

Enter the Cell number (typically your own so you can verify the test) to send the SMS and in themessage box, type in your test message. Leave "Chan No" as 0 and click OK

If you receive the SMS successfully, you can then move on to the next section and start using the SMSModule.

4 SMS Menu

The SMS Centre is where you manage and configure your systems SMS functions

In this next section, we describe the steps and options for generating and customizing SMS's

4.1 Automatic SMS's

To activate automatic sending of an SMS when Alarm events occur, there are a few simple steps tofollow:

1. Design your SMS Content/Layout or in other words, SMS wording

2. Setup SMS Categories eg. Alarms, Fail to Test, Fail to Close

Once you have completed these steps...

- Link specific Alarm/Event Codes to the SMS Categories setup in 2 above

- Link SMS Categories to Keyholders that will receive SMS's

To get the most out of the automated SMS facility and to ensure that the SMS your client's receive areeasy to read, it is important that you have good understanding of how an SMS is generated.

The generation of an automatic SMS has a specific sequence. Each Alarm that is set for auto SMS isassigned an SMS category

a. When an Alarm/Event is received, the SMS category is checked to see if it enabled for auto SMS b. We then take the Alarm's SMS category and look at each Keyholder for the client in questionc. If the Keyholder's SMS category matches the Alarm's SMS category, we then generate an SMS forthat Clientd. The SMS is generated using the SMS Template assigned to this SMS category

4.2 SMS Templates

What are SMS Templates?

In english: SMS Templates are rules or instructions that control the layout of a SMS

You can have as many different "rules" or SMS Templates as you wish.

The actual content/wording of the SMS is controlled by the SMS Template allocated to the Event's SMS Category described below.

TextBefore/TextAfter

TextBefore and TextAfter provide you with the option to place any wording before and after theCustomer or Alarm related SMS wording.

Please see "SMS Text Layout" above for more detail on SMS layout.

Custom SMS Text

As the title implies, you can create a totally custom SMS message for any template you like.

IMPORTANT: Custom SMS text will override/replace ALL other selections for the SMSTemplate. In other words, only this text will be sent, NOTHING ELSE.

4.3 SMS Categories

SMS Categories is the "glue" that enables an incoming Event to trigger and SMS and then "LINKS" theSMS to the selected Client/Keyholders.

When you setup a SMS Category, you will choose a Category Code (your choice), give it a descriptionthat makes sense to you and then you must link a SMS Template to the SMS Category. The SMStemplate determines the layout of all SMS's sent under this Category.

4.4 Global SMS Text

Global SMS content provides 2 sections of text that is added to an SMS by default, in other words,Globally.

If these entries are left blank, they are ignored.

SPECIAL NOTE: SMS Templates (described below) also have TextBefore and TextAfter entries. Ifyou fill in any text in the SMS Templates for these items, SMS Template settings will take priorityover any text you enter here

4.5 Event Code SMS Settings

Automatic SMS's are generated when a selected Event/Alarm code is configured for SMS, is receivedinto WatchManager.

You can enable any Event code in WatchManager for SMS triggering. The choice is yours.

Go to Menu, Global Event Codes (CTRL-F2).

Choose the Alarm code you wish to enable for SMS generation and select CHANGE

Looking at the example below, to enable SMS on this event:

Selecting a SMS Category eg. "O - Opening Signal" will cause a SMS to be triggered when thisEvent code is received in the system.

By default, the wording in the Event Description (Meaning) field is used as the SMS wording, in thisexample: ILLEGAL OPENING

You can choose to alter this by typing in your own custom wording in the Alarm Custom SMS Textfield at the bottom of the screen. Any text you type into this field will override (used in place of) thestandard wording for the Event.

The next step is the settings for individual Keyholder's that will actually receive the SMS.

4.6 Keyholder SMS Settings

If you haven't already done so, please read the preceding section entitled Automatic SMS Settingsfirst.

You've identified which Event Codes will trigger a SMS when received in the system.

Now we'll go over the second level or tier in configuring the SMS module ie. Identifying whichKeyholders will receive the actual SMS.

To enable any keyholder for SMS, simply edit the Client record in question, then select the Keyholderoption (F3) and edit the desired keyholder record.

Select the SMS tab on the Keyholder entry.

To send any text specific to this Keyholder, enter the text in the SMS Text fields.

5 SMS Relay

SMS Relay is a special function primarily designed to offer communication services to CommunityPolicing/Farm Watch groups.

When the SMS Relay function is enabled for a specific Clients, it allows the client to send an SMS intothe Control Room.

This SMS is then RELAYED to other selected Keyholders on the same account.

5.1 Client Account settings

Steps to activate the SMS Relay on a Client Account:

1. Create a UNIQUE Event Code on the chosen Client record (Uniques/Overrides):

· Event Code: SMSR· Description: SMS Relay· Interpretation: LOG ONLY, NO ACTION· SMS Settings: Choose an SMS Category to trigger SMS (create one if necessary)

2. KEYHOLDERS - Ensure Keyholders that are allowed to send in Relay SMS's are ENABLED bychecking "Received SMS on this Account"

3. KEYHOLDERS - Set SMS settings for those Keyholders that will receive the relayed SMS by settingthe SMS Category on the Keyholders.

NOTE: Relayed SMS will not be sent to the originating Cell Number/Keyholder.

5.2 SMS Layout for Relay

For this function work correctly, the person sending/originating SMS to be relayed must send the SMSusing a specific format.

The SMS MUST START with the letters SMSR followed by a SPACE and then the text to berelayed

Example relay SMS text: SMSR Lookout for 3 males in white Golf reg RTY123-GP

This will relay the text Lookout for 3 males in white Golf reg RTY123-GP to other Keyholders on thesame account.

The SMS sent out also include the Cell Number that originated the Relay SMS.

6 Technician SMS Interface

If you have the WatchManager SMS Module installed on your system, you are able to make use of theTechnician's SMS facility which is a standard part of the SMS Module.

What this means is that your Technicians in the field, using his Cell Phone, can:

- Put a Client's Alarm on test- Do the work that is required- Test the Alarm system (all events are sent to his Cell Phone)- and finally, return the Alarm to active service

all without hassling your Control Room Staff.

6.1 Technician Information

Before a Technician can make use of the SMS functions, you have to load his details into theWatchManager system.

In the WatchManager system, edit Installer details:

The following information is required:

1. Cell Phone - The Technician's Cell Phone number2. SMS Access: Setting this entry to "Y" will allow this Technician SMS access3. Password: Allocate a password for use by the Technician4. Put on Test Time: Set the maximum time allowed for a unit to be put on Test

6.2 Tech SMS Commands

To use the Technician SMS interface, there are 2 simple commands:

PUT ALARM ON TEST

To put an Alarm on test, simply send an SMS to your Control Room GSM Unit cell number as follows:

WM1 password ClientCode

After a short while, you should receive an SMS back confirming that the Alarm has been put on test.

While the alarm is on test, all events that are triggered will be SMS'd to your handset.

ALARM OFF TEST

To take an Alarm off test, simply send an SMS to your Control Room GSM Unit cell number as follows:

WM2

After a short while, you should receive an SMS back confirming that the Alarm has been taken off test.

7 Manual SMS generation

You can only send SMS to Cell numbers that are recorded in your WatchManager system. There istwo ways to record Cell numbers in your system:

1. Via Keyholder options2. Non Monitored Cell/Pagers

Keyholder information is accessed via specific Customer records while non-monitored Cell numbers

8 Old DOS Version Configuration

The DOS Operator screen has access to the SMS Settings options but they are not as "pretty" as theWindows SMS Centre

While you can still make changes to these settings in the DOS Screens, we do recommend you makeuse of the Windows SMS Centre screens.

8.1 DOS Alarms SMS Settings

Automatic SMS's are generated when an Alarm configured for SMS, is received into WatchManager. You can enable any Alarm code in WatchManager for SMS triggering. The choice is yours.

In WatchManager, go to Standard Alarm information (CTRL-F2). Choose the Alarm code you wish toenable for SMS generation and press <ENTER>

Looking at the example below, to enable SMS on this event:

Setting the "SMS Category" to Y will trigger an SMS when this Alarm code is received in the system.

By default, the wording in the "Meaning" field is used as the SMS wording, in this example: ALARM

You can choose to alter this by typing in your own custom wording in the Message field at the bottomof the screen. Any wording you type in this field will override (used in place of) the standard wordingfor the Alarm.

This completes the BASIC configuration of an Alarm/Event code for SMS generation.

The next step is the settings for Keyholders that will actually receive the SMS.

8.2 DOS Keyholder SMS Settings

If you haven't already done so, please read the preceding section entitled Automatic Alarm SMSSettings first.

You've identified which Alarm Codes will generate SMS when received by WatchManager. Now we'llgo over the second level or tier in configuring the SMS module ie. Identifying which Keyholders willreceive the actual SMS.

To enable any keyholder for SMS, simply edit the Client record in question, then select the Keyholderoption (F3) and edit the desired keyholder record.

Once in edit mode on the Keyholder record, select AltP for Pager
