Recycles Styrofoam Packaging Into New Surfboard Blanks* + = W2W does not recycle single-use food styrofoam W2W only targets packaging and commercial foam W2W compliments RAPs efforts to eliminate single-use food container foam What happens to the foam? Foam is densified and reprocessed into new EPS W2W is a Public-Private Partnership Invention, Development and Operations Sponsorship and Funding (NGO ) (Blank Manufacturer) Additional Partners provide activism marketing and logistic support Why Waste to Waves Matters 1.Styrofoam is the most common plastic trash found on our beaches (source: SD Surfrider survey 2011) 2.Styrofoam can be recycled indefinitely, but almost never is 3.Recycling is cooler when you can make a surfboard How Waste to Waves Works Creative Educational Website connects and informs participants about the W2W program See content at: EPS foam Collections occur at 20+ CA surf shops and at Special Events Special Events Included: UC Santa Cruz City of Malibu Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach) Earth Day (multiple events) Aquarium of the Bay (San Francisco) Local collection efforts build goodwill and community School Programs engage youth in community activism Commercial Collections Impact Evaluation (so far) Environmental Benefits 20,000+ lbs of EPS collected and diverted from the landfill and oceans 90,000+ lbs of CO 2 emissions averted (41 tons) Educational Benefit Four schools and universities 600+ kids One award-winning science project Lots more to come in Fall 12 Major outreach, activation, and engagement with education partners Surf Industry Benefit Online survey with responders used to obtain data How Chapters Can Get Involved Surfrider Chapter Opportunities For select CA Chapters: We are looking for a W2W coordinator (SoCal Chapters) Help create foam collection opportunities in your community Schools, foam drives, etc For other Chapters: Legwork needed to identify foam transport and processing infrastructure We will help you develop this!
