What is Waste to Energy

Federal law recognizes Waste to Energy as renewable.

22+ states and growing have WtE in their RPS CES was in a stand

alone bill that was rejected by the Senate two years in a row

WtE was placed into this bill

Placed into SB13-252 to update CO RPS

What is Waste to Energy

3 main types of Waste to Energy exists Plasma

Extremely high temperature 7,000 to 25,000 degrees Fahrenheit

Vaporizes everything and can handle hazardous waste

Best on large MW production based on plant costs

What is Waste to Energy

3 main types of Waste to Energy exists (cont) Incineration

Uses oxygen and open flame to burn trash

Most common in USA Must scrub dioxins

and other items caused by the oxygen component in the process

What is Waste to Energy

3 main types of Waste to Energy exists (cont) Pyrolysis

Indirect heating of waste stream

Oxygen starved to prevent dioxins from forming

Operates at 700 to 1400 degrees Fahrenheit

CES approach on WtE

Typical Waste to Energy Incineration

Creative Energy Systems Proprietary Data

Incineration is NOT similar to Pyrolysis• Production of syngas or heat is different• Incineration uses oxygen and contacts MSW

Environmental and Recycling Concerns

Waste to Energy plants provide the best recycling program available Is a revenue source for the plant Most cost effective approach to acquiring the

recyclables Less fossil fuel being burned collecting the

recyclables Less green house gas created by trucks

Captures all the waste thrown into trash now Sorts out metals etc. from products that would

otherwise be thrown out. Ex. Metal in box spring is captured

Environmental and Recycling Concerns

Waste to Energy plants provide the best recycling program available (cont) Captures hazardous material that would be

buried in landfill Prevents Methane gas from being created

and released to atmosphere EPA site shows 89,000 carbon credits being

generated on a 10 MWe pyrolysis based plant Department of Energy with EPA evaluated

pyrolysis plant and it met all Federal permit requirements

Summary Effective method to deal with USA

waste stream problems Creates jobs in local rural communities

About 60 jobs per 10 MW facility Waste to Energy is BASE power vice

peak power of wind and solar Power companies can relay on solid production

regardless of environmental conditions Market competitive price point with NO

government subsidies
