Hey, Grinder Guy myfuel bills are costing me myprofits! What should I do?

Like every other con-sumer, those of us in therecycling world are suf-fering from high fuelprices as well. Sadly, it ismultiplied times thenumber of pieces ofequipment we all have. Ifyour pricing considera-tions do not include a

fuel surcharge option, you are going to keep los-ing profits as fuel pricesincrease. So when itcomes to making achange to solve this prob-lem, what are owner/op-erators doing to turn thissituation around?

With some 1000 plushp grinders using 40 or50 gallons of fuel everyhour, your fuel bill ex-

ceeds $200 an hour. Thatis painful and unsustain-able without raisingprices. When I tell cus-tomers they could possi-bly cut two-thirds of theirfuel bill by switching froma high speed to a lowspeed high torque shred-der, it surprises them. In-quiries have increaseddramatically.

I am no engine expert, but I have learned a fewthings running equip-ment. Whether you arerunning a high speed orlow speed unit, here aresome ideas on how toconserve fuel. Remember,a 10 percent savings willmean thousands of dol-lars at the end of the year.

Air Cleaner — It does-n’t get much simplerthan this. Withoutenough air, your enginewill never burn all thefuel being dumped intothe engine. If you seeblack smoke from theexhaust, the first thingto check is the air clean-er. Replacing them morefrequently will savemoney in the long run.

Fuel system — Fuelsystem treatments and

clean fuel filters keep thecorrect flow and volumesrunning through the en-gine. Some fuel treat-ments are expensive, butespecially for older en-gines. Just the same, treating them will helpthem run much more effi-ciently. If you think re-placing some of the injec-tors might be helpful, have a service technicianfrom your engine manu-facturer test each injectorand they will be able totell you which are operat-ing correctly and whichneed replaced.

Derate your engine —

Have your engine manu-facturer derate your en-gine to a lower horsepow-er. Each engine has threeor four horsepower rat-ings, so by lowering yourhorsepower you can savefuel. Talk with your en-gine manufacturer aboutthe pros and cons. Youwill probably not notice aloss of 50-100 horsepow-er, but your wallet willbenefit from the change.

Keep your services upto date — Change your oilon schedule. Clean oilkeeps an engine coolerand running smoothly.Especially with older en-

gines that operated theirfuel systems with oilpres—- Cooler fuel willburn much more effi-ciently. The hotter thefuel, the more inefficientit becomes. Keep yourfuel storage tanks cov-ered and keep your fueltanks full. Today’s en-gines return a consider-able amount of fuel backto the tank, which in turnheats up the fuel. A fulltank keeps fuel cooler.

Clutch/Pumps —Keeping your clutchmaintained to propertorque and change thefluids regularly. Thishelps reduce drag on theengine. Eliminating un-needed pumps can alsohelp. Think about con-verting a hydraulic con-veyor to electric power.By eliminating a hy-draulic power source, youcan save fuel costs.

New Fuel Systems —With all the new electron-ics and new common railfueling systems, some Tier4 emission engines are get-ting better fuel economythan the Tier 3 engines.

Speaking with EricMathewson and SamMeeker of Caterpillar atWaste Expo in Las Ve-gas, they gave a few oth-er options:

RPM Reduction —Something as simple ashaving the engine com-puter lower a bulldozerrpm slightly when it is putinto reverse can save gal-lons of fuel per day andnot sacrifice productivity.

Tracking software —Tracking software onequipment has become acommon option. A prod-uct such as Caterpillar’s“Product Link” allows youto track many points ofoperation including idletime. If enabled, the soft-ware can shut off a piece

PELLA, IOWA — Ver-meer Corporation wasawarded the Joseph L.Abbott Jr. InnovativeProduct Award (New In-stallation Category) bythe North American So-ciety of TrenchlessTechnology (NASTT) atthe 2012 No Dig Show, held March 12-15,2012, in Nashville, TN.Vermeer won the award

for its D36x50R Series IINavigator® HDD,equipped with the rockfocused MAGnumTdrilling system.

The MAGnum drillingsystem uses rapidly ro-tating magnets of alter-nating polarity withinthe carriage assembly, which generates a highfrequency percussive ac-tion to fracture and ef-

fectively bore throughtough formations, in-cluding solid rock. Thishammer technology wasdeveloped in collabora-tion with FlexiDRILL, aNew Zealand based engi-neering company, and islicensed for exclusivedistribution in the HDDmarket by Vermeer.

Not a dedicated rockdrill, the MAGnum sys-

tem can be disengaged bythe flip of the switch, andthe D36x50R Series IIwill perform as a conven-tional HDD drill. Thisversatility qualifies thedrill for a range of groundconditions to help boostoverall utilization.

“Vermeer is humbledto receive this awardfrom NASTT,” said DaveWisniewski, vice presi-

dent of underground so-lutions for Vermeer. “Wespent several years de-veloping this new tech-nology. It is true innova-tion for tomorrow’s job-site challenges.”

Each year, NASTT rec-ognizes two companiesfor state of the art prod-ucts that help advancetrenchless technology. This is the third time Ver-meer has won in this cat-egory. Vermeer has previ-ously won the AbbottAward for theD20x22FX Series II Navi-gator flex angle drill andthe Vermeer the AXIS®guided boring system.

NASTT is a multipledisciplinary society of in-dividuals and organiza-tions with professional, utilitarian or environ-mental interests intrenchless technology. Its mission is to advancetrenchless technologyand to promote its bene-fits for the public and theenvironment by increas-

ing awareness andknowledge through infor-mation dissemination;research and develop-ment; education andtraining; and partner-ships with organizationsand agencies interestedin trenchless technologyand its benefits.

For more informationon Vermeer productsand services, visit thecompany’s website atwww.vermeer.com oremail Vermeer [email protected].

Vermeer Corporation ofPella, Iowa, manufac-tures a full line of tub andhorizontal grinders, brush chippers, stumpcutters and tree spades,as well as horizontal di-rectional drilling systems, mini skid steers, utilityand track trenchers andagricultural products.Vermeer offers worldwidesales, support, serviceand parts through an in-dependent, authorizeddealer network.

of equipment after idlinga set period, thus savingfuel. All these featurescan be tracked remotelyas well. Check with yourequipment or enginemanufacturer for soft-ware they may offer.

Another example ofsoftware assistance is the“Eco mode” on theKomptech Shredders. With this mode enabled, the machine monitors thetorque on the shreddershafts to determine ifthere is material in thehopper or not. If there isnot, the shredder throt-tles down to an idle whilestill turning the rotorshafts very slowly. Whenmaterial is put into thehopper, the torque on theshaft increases and themachine throttles up tofull rpm. So you don’thave to worry about youroperator going on breakor going to load a truckwith the shredder run-ning at full engine rpm.Check with your grinderor shredder manufactur-er for similar software.

On the grinder specificside of equipment opera-tion, eliminating drag onyour rotor or hammermillwill reduce engine loadand result in lower fueluse. For example, on a

first grind or when grind-ing land clearing debrisjust for reduction, a pre-cise product size is notnecessary. Try using old-er tips and largerscreens. By increasingthe distance between thetip and the screen or thetip and the anvil, you willreduce drag, which willhelp you maintain rpmand keeps you produc-tive. This example worksbest with upturn rotorsand woody materials.

For downturn rotorsand hammer mills run-ning stringy wood or palmmaterial, this would notbe a good option. In thosesituations, maintaining atight tolerance at the anviland bigger screens andgreater tip distance after-ward, works best. For afinish grind, this does notwork at all, as you willcreate more fines in yourproduct and productionrates will suffer.

Experiment a littlewhen you have the time. You may be more thanpleased with the outcome.

Near the end of the 20th century, the globalcommunity was becoming increasingly aware thatthe technological advancements of the past 100 yearswere taking a toll on the environment. As a result, federal and state environmental agencies developed

regulations and laws to help protect the environmentfor future generations. For instance, the passage ofthe USEPA’s Energy Policy Act of 1992 amended theNational Energy Conservation Policy Act of 1978. Itadded water conservation and renewable energy

sources to energy efficiency requirements. During that time, it was becoming clear to Jason

Thompson that renewable energy sources were goingto become a viable in the new millennium. It was thenthat he saw this as prime opportunity to start abiomass recycling center. Thus, the creation ofAmerican Property Experts.

American Property Experts is a comprehensivevegetative debris recycling facility that annually takesin assorted yard waste (18,000 tons), wood waste(3000 tons), root mat (2500 tons) and vegetativedebris (24,000 tons). According to Thompson, thecompany has contracts with local municipalities, landscapers and homeowners from as far north asRichmond, VA to as far south as Savannah, GA. Onaverage, they receive a couple hundred dump truckloads daily.

Thompson explained, “We process all the wooddebris at our 8.5 acre facility in Wilmington, NC.Here, we annually produce 35,000 tons of boiler fuel,8500 tons of topsoil and 1500 tons of high qualitymulch. The boiler fuel is shipped to several co-gener-ation plants to make electricity. These includeInternational Paper, which produces all their ownfuel and sells the excess back to the grid, CravenCounty Electric, a county owned electric co-op,Primary Energy, a private energy production firm andGreen Power, an energy producing company that con-verted an old coal plant to biomass.”

Thompson added, “America Property Experts alsoprovide land clearing, tub grinding and soil screeningservices.”

Thompson chooses Morbark grinders In 2001, in order to process the wood debris,

e 9AmericanProperty from 8Thompson purchased a Morbark 1300A Tub Grinderand a Morbark Wood Hog 5600 horizontal grinder.Because of his success with the Morbark equipment,he purchased a second 1300A in 2003.

Thompson said, “I purchased the 5600 because ithas a smaller safety zone (throw zone of debris) thana tub grinder. That allows us to work in closedsystems. We find that its production rate is slightlyslower, however.”

He emphasized that the biggest reason for hisdecision to purchase the Morbark grinders was therelationship that he had with Morbark’s area repre-sentative, Danny Westmoreland, a member of theJames River Equipment Dealership in Charlotte, NC.

“In the 10 years I have owned Morbark grinders, whenever I’ve had a question, I could call Danny,” hesaid. “If I couldn’t get him I could Michael Stanton, the Southeast U.S. regional sales manager forMorbark, Inc. The communication has been suburb. That is tremendously important since the threemachines I own are worth $600,000 or $700,000each and represent 60 percent of my total equip-ment.”

“Their demo experience was also very important tomy decision to purchase Morbark equipment,” headded. “During their demo, the 1300A productionrate was much better than that of our previousmachines. Currently, a conservative estimate of ourproduction rate for heavy LCID (Land Clearing/InertDebris) is about 45 tons per hour. ”

“The Morbark units have also proven to be finan-cially efficient,” Thompson noted. “Our jobs are ratedon efficiency per hour; in other words, what it costsus per hour to operate. That helps determine what Ibill per hour. In the first year we owned the Morbarkgrinders, we had a 35 percent increase in return oninvestment. Another cost advantage is that our main-tenance costs went from 18-20 percent of our overallcosts to 7-8 percent with the Morbark machines.Basically, the Morbark units are sturdier machinesfor heavy duty land clearing grinding operations.”

Thompson added, “The mobility of the machinesalso allows us to move off site easily. We have a dozencontracts with various landfills and private recyclersthat don’t have their own grinders. Our machines gosite to site and grind on a contract bases.”

by Gwenyth Laird PernieRecently, the worlds of two

successful businesses cametogether when American PropertyExperts chose Morbark grindersfor their primary equipmentneeds. The G-Series wheel loaders from Vol-vo Construction Equipment are the ver-satile L60G, L70G and L90G midsizedmachines. Not only does the loaderarms’ patented TP linkage offer superiorbreakout and lifting forces, they also re-main perfectly parallel throughout thelifting range — ensuring exceptionalload stability. This combination of pow-er throughout the lift cycle, parallelmovement and long reach makes theL60G, L70G and L90G ideal in materialhandling jobs and where fast work cy-cles are needed. Suitable for a widerange of other applications, these job-site workhorses can change tools in amatter of moments, thanks to the Volvohydraulic attachment bracket.

The L60G, L70G and L90G all enjoythe modern stylistic overhaul of the restof the G-Series range. This includes anew electrically operated sloping enginehood design that improves rear visibili-ty and, when opened, provides wide ac-cess to the engine compartment, mak-ing servicing and repairs easier.

Higher torque with lower emissions These new machines meet the re-

quirements of the Tier 4i emissions leg-islation that came into force on January1, 2012. The L60G, L70G and L90G areall fitted with a Volvo 6 liter, 6 cylinder

turbocharged V-ACT (Volvo AdvancedCombustion Technology) off highwaydiesel engine, which features cooled gasrecirculation and a particulate filterwith active regeneration. The diesel par-ticulate filter (DPF) temporarily holdsthe particulate matter and then inciner-ates it, further reducing emissions. Thisprocess is conducted without any lossof performance or operation. Producingbetween 161 and 173 hp, depending onthe model, these three units providehigh torque at low engine speeds.

Middle weight Volvo wheel loaders As well as meeting the low emissions

requirements of the legislation, the D6engine also leads the industry in termsof fuel efficiency, reliability and noise. The production of torque and power atlow engine speeds, combined with loadsensing hydraulics, promotes work at alower rpm, which in turn extends en-gine life, lowers fuel usage, and dramat-ically reduces noise. Fuel use and noiseare also reduced, thanks to a hydrauli-cally driven, electronically controlledfan, which increases fan speeds onlywhen needed.

Built to perform together These newengines are matched to drivetrain, hy-draulics and lifting systems that are alldesigned and produced by Volvo for im-

proved productivity, lower emissions, greater smoothness, easy serviceability, and operator comfort. That’s not all — theL90G wheel loader also features a 23 per-cent increase in lifting force and 19 per-cent improvement in breakout force. Theimprovement ensures smooth operationand full buckets — resulting in faster cy-cle times and increased productivity.

Load sensing hydraulics delivers pow-er to hydraulic functions only whenneeded, eliminating unnecessary oilpumping. Fitted with high capacity axi-al piston pumps with variable flow, theworking hydraulic pressure has beenincreased from 3,771 to 4,496 psi. These improvements provide superiorcontrol of the attachments and loading,as well as higher breakout forces andfaster lift and tilt functions.

Transmissions feature the exception-al Volvo Automatic Power Shift (APS)concept, which ensures the loader al-ways operates in the ideal gear by sens-ing engine and travel speed, kick down, engine braking and other factors. Offer-ing operators a choice of four gear-shift-ing programs, APS results in more effi-cient work cycles with lower fuel con-sumption and wear. Power is deliveredto the ground through heavy duty wetbrake axles that offer high rimpull. In

difficult terrain, operators can select thedifferential lock in order to transfer 100percent of the available drive to thewheels, reducing tire slippage and offer-ing maximum traction in soft or slippery

Command and control with middleweight Volvo wheel loaders

The new L60G, L70G and L90G are thelatest wheel loaders from Volvo Con-struction Equipment in the 13 to 17 tonsclass. With its industry leading versatility, the Torque Parallel linkage combinespower with precision.

Thirty years of experi-ence owning and runninga demolition companyhave taught Roland andZoya Jarl, owners of TheEEI Group, to always bealert for the right equip-ment to do a job. This ex-perience is what led themto establish a centralequipment supply compa-ny, Enterprising Europa,Inc. (EEI) that could offerdemolition contractors awide selection of solutionsfor their project needs.

EEI was already theimporter and generaldistributor for all SO-COMEC products inNorth America, includ-ing the DMS mediumlight duty breaker,MDO medium heavyduty breakers, PDO Se-ries crushers and SBVSeries screening buck-ets. Now EEI is able tooffer SOCOMEC’s latestaddition, their 9,240-pound breaker, theMDO 4000TS.

The MDO 4000TS thatwas recently made avail-

able for export to NorthAmerica, after an exten-sive one year testing pro-gram in European quar-ries. The heavy weightMDO breaker range, nowconsisting of five models,is able to satisfy the de-mands of customers withexcavators from 15 to 75tons. These breakers reaf-firm the traditional char-acteristics of SOCOMEC’sproducts: reliability, tech-nical innovation and alsotheir unprecedented 60months warranty.

In regards to the break-er’s inside structure, thetie rods have a new pro-file and an innovativetightening system, whichgives them great elasticityand resistance. Moreover, the heavy weight MDObreaker range from 3500to 12000-foot-poundshares, together with thelight weight class DMSbreaker range, the exclu-sive advantage to be ableto remove the piston andthe sleeves without hav-ing to loosen the tie rods.

Constant, reliable break-er performance is as-sured due to an innova-tive system of hydraulicoil pressure control in theinput line, while an auto-matic variator or a hy-draulic control systemchanges the frequency ofthe blows, adjusting tothe power requested forthe work to be done. Thepiston has been the ob-ject of long, profitablestudy, and is equippedwith a strong hydraulicbrake able to avoid harm-ful blank firing to thebreaker. The metal caseof the heavy weight classbreaker range is built inhigh resistant Hardoxsteel, along with sideguides in the lower partof the breaker and an in-novative upper rubberpad which totally elimi-nates vibrations to theexcavator boom. For un-derwater or tunneling ap-plications it is possible topressurize the strokechamber. A new specialdust proof protection on

the lower part of the pis-ton has been positionedto prevent the entrance ofany impurity.

“I’m very pleased to beable to offer this expand-ed breaker product line,”says Mr. Jarl. “It helpsus offer a much morecomplete line of breakers. We want demolition con-tractors to come to us forequipment that solvestheir problems, for equip-ment that lasts. This lineof heavy hydraulic break-ers fits that description.”

EEI started with theGallmac Tool Carrier ma-chinery line, then expand-ed to include Socomec Hy-draulic Hammers, Rock-Frac fracturing mortar,CanAm Rock Drill acces-sories and most recently, the Trevi Benne line of at-tachments. With the addi-tion of these products, EEIbecame the EEI-Group.EEI, based at 439 Rte 17North, Mahwah, NJ07430, can be contactedat 201-236-0969, or [email protected].

DENVER — In celebration of EarthDay, Colorado Governor John Hicken-looper signed the Electronic RecyclingJobs Act (SB 1322) into law. He wasjoined by a coalition of Colorado smallbusinesses, members of the recyclingindustry, conservation groups and non-profit organizations. The landmark leg-islation encourages the recycling ofelectronic waste, creates thousands ofnew jobs and will prevent disposal ofharmful chemicals in Colorado landfills.

“The bipartisan Electronic Waste Re-cycling Jobs Act is an incredible winwin win for Colorado. It will increase theamount of electronic waste that is recy-cled in the state, create jobs, returnvaluable metals found in electronicsback into manufacturing, and providefor a cleaner and more sustainable Col-orado,” said Governor Hickenlooper.

The Act was supported and movedthrough the Colorado Legislature by abipartisan and diverse coalition includ-ing the Act’s sponsors, Senator GailSchwartz (D-Snowmass Village) andRep. Don Coram (R-Montrose) and part-ners including, Colorado Association forRecycling, Colorado EnvironmentalCoalition, Colorado Counties Inc. andGoodwill Industries.

“The success of the Electronic Recy-cling Jobs Act shows that Coloradanscan come together to work on issueswhich impact us all,” stated Senator

Gail Schwartz (D-Snowmass Village). “Itwas a pleasure working on this biparti-san legislation with my colleagues andthe diverse stakeholders. The ElectronicRecycling Jobs Act creates new oppor-tunities for the recycling in our Stateand allows for the responsible disposalof the electronics we all enjoy, while re-ducing waste and protecting our air, land and water quality.”

Colorado joins 17 other states thatalso have passed laws to address theemerging problem of electronic waste inlandfills. Electronic products from tele-visions and computers — all containlarge quantities of valuable materialssuch as gold, silver, copper and alu-minum. By currently land filling theprecious metals residents are literallythrowing away resources which couldbe used for manufacturing. Instead oflosing these materials, this legislationwould prevent large screen electronicsfrom being placed in landfills in the firstplace. Importantly, it leaves the specificsolutions to the electronic waste to thefree market.

“As we’ve seen in other states, elec-tronic waste legislation will helpstrengthen electronic recycling in Col-orado allowing us to create potentiallythousands of jobs,” stated MarjorieGriek, executive director, Colorado As-sociation for Recycling. “This type of leg-islation can serve as a successful model

for keeping toxic materials out of thewaste stream while recovering valuableresources for reuse by Colorado busi-nesses and protect the environment.”

Colorado is currently throwing awaybetween 40,000 and 161,000 tons ofelectronic waste a year and only recy-cling on average 8,000 tons. For every10,000 tons of electronic waste recy-cled, at least 130 jobs are created withthe possibility of twice that many. A banhas the potential to create 2,500 jobs.

Electronic devices also contain largeamounts of toxic metals such as lead, cadmium and mercury, as well as oth-er contaminants, allowing a stagger-ing amount of toxins entering ourlandfills each year, threatening Col-orado’s air, water and land. In fact,

despite only amounting to two percentof our trash by volume, discardedelectronics account for a shockinglydisproportionate 70 percent of theheavy metals in our landfills.

“We congratulate Governor Hicken-looper, Senator Schwartz, Representa-tive Coram and our other elected lead-ers who supported and worked so hardto pass the Electronic Recycling JobsAct,” said Elise Jones, executive direc-tor of the Colorado EnvironmentalCoalition. “The Act epitomizes the spiritof Earth Day, were Coloradans cancome together and use our ingenuity tocreate jobs, use our finite resourcesmore efficiently and lessen our impacton the environment.”

Company Wrench’s unique road to be-coming a heavy equipment distributorbegan 13 years ago, when Hutchinsonstarted a truck, trailer and equipment

shop in Fairfield County, Ohio. At thetime, the company offered 24 hour, sevenday a week wrecker and recovery service.

It wasn’t until 2002 that CompanyWrench turned its focus to the demoli-tion market, representing a line of spe-cialty hydraulic attachments. In 2005,Terex Construction Americas began itsrelationship with Company Wrench toprovide local sales and service supportfor Terex Fuchs scrap and recyclingcustomers operating in Ohio. This gaveCompany Wrench a full line of purposebuilt material handlers designed for thescrap, recycling and demolition mar-kets. With its strong bent on servingthese markets, Company Wrench imme-diately became a top performing distrib-utor for the material handler line.

When consumers head to the Virginia PeninsulasPublic Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility inYorktown, VA for their composted mulch or specialtysoil products for their landscaping projects, they areassured of a consistent, quality product. That isbecause the compost has been carefully screenedwith a McCloskey 733 trommel screener before it issold to the public. In a recent visit to VPPSA, WasteHandling Equipment News had the opportunity to seethe McCloskey 733 in action while VPPSA waspreparing a stockpile of composted mulch for futuresale.

According to Donald “Donnie” Bonivich, theCompost Facility supervisor for VPPSA, all of thecomposted mulch goes through the 733 trommel asthe final step in the composting process. “When a

windrow has cured for the appropriate length of time,we screen it with the trommel,” Donnie said. “Theovers are returned to a compost windrow for furthercomposting and the screened material is eithermoved to our sales area near the entrance to thefacility, or it is stockpiled for future customer salesand direct shipment to large consumers. With thistrommel, we can screen three tractor trailer loads ofmaterial in about an hour, if we need to.”

Donnie explained that VPPSA consumers comefrom communities in Hampton, Poquoson and YorkCounties in Virginia. “VPPSA is a ten city and countysolid waste authority,” he said. “Facility membersinclude the Cities of Hampton, Poquoson andWilliamsburg and the Counties of Essex, James City,King and Queen, King William, Mathews, Middlesex

and York. The Towns of Tappahannock, Urbanna andWest Point are also members.”

As we toured the facility, Donnie said that the firststep of the process is the material is ground using atub grinder. Then, it is placed into windrows that areseveral hundred yards long, eighteen feet wide andabout seven feet tall.

Over the next six months, the windrows aremonitored as they cure. This is done to ensureconsistency. During the curing process, temperaturesin the stockpiled compost can reach 160 degrees. These products are cured for a minimum of threemonths. This curing process ensures that the materi-al is weed seed, bug and pathogen free making it safeto place around a customer’s property.

From there it goes through the tub grinder again,

Donnie Bonovich, Compost Facility supervisor and David Bleeks, McCloskey representative from Commonwealth Equipment, talk about future considerations for VPPSAand the upcoming equipment needs for 2012 as the facility's McCloskey 733 Trommel is busy processing a row of finished composted mulch.

which feeds the second grind directly into theMcCloskey 733. This reduces an extra handling stepof manually feeding the reground material into thetrommel. During this screening process, theMcCloskey 733 separates the material into the twoavailable products, mulch fines and reground mulch.Once the material has rested, usually thirty days, theprocess is complete and the material is ready for sale,

For the 2012 season, VPPSA offers four productsfor sale: reground mulch, mulch fines, compost anda soil blend. Since this visit to the VPPSA facility,Donnie tells us that they have begun coloring mulchwith a newly acquired Diamond Z 1352BL tubgrinder, and they will be offering colored mulch aspart of their product line. This product was offeredseveral years ago, but with the economy people wereleaning toward the lower prices offered on regularmulch. With renewed interest, they will be offering itagain.

VPPSA is a member of the U.S. Composting and thenewly formed Virginia Composting Council. For moreinformation about the VPPSA compost facility, contact them at 757-898-5012 or for informationabout all of the VPPSA programs visit them online atwww.vppsa.org.

by Jon M. CaseyIt did not take long to see why

the crew at the VirginiaPeninsulas Public Service Author-ity (VPPSA) enjoyed having theMcCloskey International 733 highperformance trommel goingthrough its paces on a recentafternoon at the Yorktown, VACompost Facility. The 733, withits 7-foot diameter trommelscreen and 225 hp CAT dieselengine, gives VPPSA the ability toscreen up to 400-cubic-yards ofdry, composted mulch per hour asthey prepare for the 2012 yardcare and landscaping season. With a virtual endless line ofcustomers awaiting a load offreshly screened, compostedmulch, Donnie Bonivich needsthe assurance that the 733’sreliability provides when it comesto having product ready for hiscustomers.

David Bleeks, the Common-wealth Equipment representativewho works with VPPSA to keepthe 733 serviced and ready to go,said that the volume of productthat the high performancetrommel is able to process, givesrecyclers the kind of equipmentthat they need to meet the highvolume demands of the busyspring landscaping time of year.He noted that the trommel’s48-inch wide remote controlledradial stacker, gives the operatorthe ability to stockpile up to1,200-cubic-yards of materialfrom a single operating location. With the 180 degree rotatingstacker, the need to move thetrommel to additional locations isreduced, giving the crew moreoperating time in one spot.

Additionally, with its 33-footlong drum, material is able tospend more time on the screen,

which allows for a more thoroughscreening of the finished product. One of the nice features thatBonivich appreciates in theproduction capabilities of the 733is that he is able to screen aboutthree tractor trailer loads ofmulch in an hour if and when heneeds to. He says that this kind ofcapability is especially helpfulduring the spring and summerwhen wholesale customers aredoing everything they can to keeptheir composted mulch inadequate supply.

For more information onMcCloskey International, visittheir website at www.mccloskey-international.com. For customersin the Commonwealth Equipmentmarketing area, visit their websiteat www.commonwealthequip-ment.com.

McCloskey International’s 733 high performance trommel is second to none!
