Horse Camping[Revised Edition]
George HatleyPhotographs by Lewis PortnoyIntroduction by Juli S. Thorson
Horse camping has long been part o Pacic Northwestlore. The Nez Perce used horses as transportation, androntier ur trappers also loaded and rode the animals. The journals o these mountain men oten contain glow-
ing accounts o their nomadic liestyle and exhibit a pro-ound appreciation o their surroundings. Today, peoplestill long to experience pristine wilderness and enjoy thesimple pleasures nature oers. Pack trips allow individuals o many ages and physicalabilities to reach glorious backcountry they would never see otherwise.
George Hatley has a deep connection to the region and its early pioneers. As aboy, he learned that his great uncle had been involved in the Misery Hill scrimmageo the Nez Perce war, and that the Native Americans were riding Appaloosas. He
listened to his grandather recount his Palouse country arrival by wagon train in 1877,describing a beautiul expanse with stirrup-high grass waving in the wind like oceansur. But the grand prairie sea became armland, and so during harvest season, youngGeorge was ascinated by teams o 33 horses pulling combines. He eventually becamea cattle rancher and trail guide, indulging both his adventurous spirit and his pas-sion or horses by leading numerous camping trips amid the Northwests magnicentmountains and canyons.
Originally released in 1981 and again in 1992, George Hatleys common-sensemanual is considered a classic. In his amiable, practical voice, he shares both
successes and oversights, and reveals observations and experiences rom years asan outtter. He covers trip planning, horses, tack, gear, ood, and other aspects oadvanced preparation. He discusses horse hauling and packing or the journey. Finally, he provides inormation about setting out on the trail, establishing a site, and lie in camp. This new WSU Press edition has been skillully updated by
Juli S. Thorson, Editor and Associate Publisher oHorse & Rider magazine.

Womens Votes,
Womens VoicesThe Campaign or Equal Rightsin Washington
Shanna Stevenson
The right o citizens to vote is a pillar o democracya mainstay denied to Washington women until theyunited in a campaign to enact change. Suragettes
briefy achieved the right to vote through an 1883legislative act, only to have a Territorial SupremeCourt decision declare it invalid. Once again, womenormed clubs and embarked on a grassroots crusade.
They canvassed neighborhoods, circulated petitions, published a newspaper, con-ducted debates, sold a cookbook, participated in airs, and more. Finally, in 1910,suragettes persuaded Washington men to ratiy a state constitutional amendmentgranting permanent voting rights or women, only the th state to do so. Theirsuccess revitalized the national movement, inspiring activists struggling towardanother pivotal goal, the passage o the Nine teenth Amendment to the United StatesConstitu tion. Approved in 1920, the revision secured voting rights or women across
But the story does not end there. Woman surage was a harbinger o social change.Females enrolled in higher education in record numbers, became more directlyinvolved in community aairs, and increasingly joined such proessions as socialwork, medicine, and architecture. By 1910, women dominated the oce workplace, comprising 83 percent o typists and stenographers.
Since gaining the vote, emale Washingtonians have regularly exercised theirvoice in gov ernmentaddressing the concerns o women, chil dren, and amilies, and continuing to strive or equal rights.
Womens Votes, Womens Voices provides a comprehensive summary o theWashington woman surage movement and presents vignettes on many o thestates most active leaders, such as May Arkwright Hutton and Emma SmithDeVoe, along with numerous illustrations.
Author Shanna Stevenson is a historian living in Olympia, Washington, and coordinatoro the Washington Womens History Consortium project.
