Kickoff between the Cougars and Huskies is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the game being televised by Versus. WASHINGTON STATE vs. WASHINGTON - THE SERIES: Dating back to the first meeting between the Huskies and Cougars in 1900, a 5-5 tie in Seattle, Washington leads the 102-game series by a 65-31-6 margin. From 1934-61 the winner of the cross-state rivalry was awarded the Governor’s Trophy. In 1962 the Apple Cup trophy was instituted, and Washington holds a 33-14 record in Apple Cup games since then. Last season the Huskies posted a 30-0 win in Seattle as Jake Locker threw for a touchdown and ran for another. WSU has won four of the last six Apple Cups, however, including the last meeting in Pullman, a 16-13 double-overtime victory. Washington holds a 15-13-1 advantage when playing in Pullman, although the Cougars have won two of the last three meetings in Martin Stadium. SENIOR DAY: Prior to Saturday’s game Washington State will honor 20 seniors who have played or are playing their final game in a Cougar uniform. The seniors include Myron Beck, Daniel Blackledge, Zach Enyeart, Reid Forrest, Aaron Gehring, Nico Grasu, Casey Hamlett, Micah Hannam, Hallston Higgins, Anthony Houston, Kevin Kooyman, James Montgomery, Chima Nwachukwu, Chris Prummer, Marcus Richmond, Jeffrey Solomon, Chantz Staden, Zach Tatman, Zack Williams and Bernard Wolfgramm. TUEL PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Following his performance at Oregon State, WSU quarterback Jeff Tuel was named the Pacific-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Tuel completed 10 of 15 passes for 157 yards and no interceptions, including a 33-yard touchdown pass to Marquess Wilson that gave the Cougars a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter. He also ran for a career-high 79 yards on 18 carries. COUGARS TO HOST OREGON STATE AT QWEST FIELD IN 2011: Washington State University’s 2011 football game against Oregon State will be played Oct. 22 at Qwest Field in Seattle. WSU first played at Qwest Field during the 2002 campaign, when it opened the season against Nevada with a 31-7 victory. Each of the following seven years saw the Cougars host a game at Qwest Field, posting a 4-3 record in those games. Due to the way the 2010 nonconference and Pac-10 schedules came together, it was not feasible for WSU to play a Seattle game in 2010. WASHINGTON STATE GAME NOTES - GAME 12 vs. WASHINGTON

Series InformationWashington 30, Washington State 0 • Nov. 28, 2009 • Seattle, Wash.

Washington State’s two-game winning streak over Washington in the Apple Cup came to an end as the Huskies posted their first shutout in 45 years with a 30-0 victory. Jake Locker threw for 196 yards and a touchdown – a 50-yarder toJermaine Kearse in the second quarter - and ran for another 94 yards and a score, leading the Huskies to their first win at home since 2003. After struggling to get the running game going in the first half, the Huskies rushed for 212 yards in the second half, more than the Cougars’ offensive total of 163 yards for the game. Locker had 82 yards on the ground after halftime, while running back Chris Polk added 97. The freshman finished the game with 130 yards and a touchdown. With WSU freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel out (sprained right knee), Kevin Lopina started the game, but both he and Marshall Lobbestael were knocked out of the game, forcing backup punter/fourth-string quarterback Dan Wagner to take the final four snaps of the first half. Lobbestael returned in the second half, and he completed 9-of-22 for 71 yards.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Cougars have faced the third-toughest schedule in the nation, according to Jeff Sagarin’s NCAA Football Ratings. The eight most difficult schedules all belong to Pac-10 schools, in order: 1. Washington, 2. WSU, 3. Oregon St., 4. UCLA, 5. California, 6. USC, 7. Arizona St. and 8. Stanford

TUEL PLAYING AT HIGH LEVEL: Quarterback Jeff Tuel continues to mature as the Cougar signal caller. The sophomore threw for more than 200 yards in each of the first nine games this season, with the streak ending against Cal when he threw for 92 yards. Although he only threw for 157 yards at Oregon State, he was efficient, completing 10 of 15 passes, with no interceptions, while also running for a career-high 79 yards. He currently ranks fifth in the conference in passing average (225.6) and is fourth in total offense (241.0).

COUGAR ROSTER STILL YOUNG: Of the 113 players on the Cougar roster, only 17 have been in the program more than three years, or prior to head coach Paul Wulff’s arrival in Dec., 2007.

NWACHUKWU AN ARA FINALIST: Washington State University safety Chima Nwachukwu has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2010 ARA Sportsmanship Award, presented annually by the Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) and given to one outstanding NCAA Division I collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship. Nwachukwu was also a Lowe’s CLASS Award and National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete semifinalist.

TUEL DRAWING COMPARISONS TO PASS COUGAR GREATS: With each start sophomore quarterback Jeff Tuel logs, he draws comparisons to former Cougar greats who also started as sophomores. Below is a breakdown of Tuel compared with Ryan Leaf and Drew Bledsoe in their sophomore seasons. Jeff Tuel Ryan Leaf Drew BledsoeCompletion % .586 .520 .556Yards 2,482 2,811 2,741Touchdowns 15 21 17Interceptions 11 12 15

COUGAR DEFENSE-PART II: The Cougars concluded their toughest stretch of the schedule midway through the season, playing three straight games against teams all ranked in the Top 17. In doing so, WSU held each opponent, No. 3 Oregon, No. 17 Arizona and No. 12 Stanford below their season averages for both points and total offense.

COUGARS ON MID-SEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS: Four members of the Washington State University football team were included on Phil Steele’s Midseason All-Pacific-10 Conference list. Sophomore defensive end Travis Long and freshman wide receiver Marquess Wilson were named to the second team while junior wide receiver Jared Karstetter and redshirt junior linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis were each named to the third team.

FRESHMAN PHENOM: Wide receiver Marquess Wilson registered his fifth game of more than 100 receiving yards at Stanford with six catches for 150 yards and a touchdown. The 150 yards is a freshman record. He is the second freshman wide receiver in school history to post multiple 100-yard games in a single season as Phillip Bobo did it three times in 1990. Wilson is proving that he can get down field as he already has nine receptions of 40-plus yards this season, more than any Cougar had in all of 2009.

STARTING STALWART: Since WSU’s 2007 season-opener against Wisconsin, Micah Hannam had started every game the Cougars had played. The redshirt senior had started 43-straight games, all at right tackle, until WSU’s contest against Arizona three weeks ago, which he missed due to a concussion. The streak marked the longest by a Cougar offensive lineman since Mike Utley started 42 in a row from 1985-88. Before the Arizona game Hannam held the longest starting streak in the conference. The past four games Hannam has been back in his customary spot, starting at right tackle.

TOUGH STRETCH OF SCHEDULE: The Cougars recently concluded the toughest three-game stretch they have faced in more than 35 years. In successive weeks WSU faced No. 3 Oregon, No. 17 Arizona and No. 12 Stanford. The last time the Cougars faced three Top 20 opponents dates back to 1974, when they played No. 16 Illinois, No. 1 Ohio State and No. 7 USC, falling against all three opponents. The last time WSU played three suc-cessive ranked teams came in 2005, when it lost in overtime to No. 12 UCLA, fell by four points at No. 25 California then lost at No. 1 USC.

NEWCOMERS SEEING TIME: Of the 60 players to see the field against Oklahoma State, 24 were making their debuts with the Cougars, or 40 percent. The Cougars played seven true freshmen – after playing just six in all of 2009 – and nine redshirt freshmen. WSU has now played 10 true freshmen this season.

MONTGOMERY ON THE MEND: Senior running back James Montgomery is inching his way back to 100 percent following a devastating leg injury that threatened to end his career. Following the SMU contest last year, Montgomery went to the emergency room with swelling in his lower leg. He was immediately rushed into the operating table suffering from acute compartment syndrome, where blood flow to the muscle is restricted. Saving Montgomery’s leg was the priority and football was a distant thought. After a year of rehab, and another surgery on his opposite knee, Montgomery sits atop the Cougar depth chart at running back.

OREGON STATE HIGHLIGHTS• Freshman Andrew Furney made his first career field goal, a 51-yarder, on his second ca-

reer attempt…he becomes the 10th Cougar to convert a field goal of 50 or more yards. • WSU’s last Pac-10 victory was against Washington, 16-13 (2OT), Nov. 22, 2008.• Washington State’s last road Pac-10 win was Nov. 24, 2007, a 42-35 win at Washington.

That was also the Cougars’ last road win of any kind.• Logwone Mitz’s second-quarter touchdown run was his fourth of the season, which at the

time tied him for the team lead with James Montgomery. Montgomery would score from a yard out later in the quarter for his fifth rushing touchdown of the season.

• Casey Hamlett’s two sacks were his first two of the season and fourth of his career.• The WSU defense held Oregon State scoreless in the first quarter, marking back-to-back

games the Cougars have held its opponent scoreless in the first period (California).• Aire Justin’s second-quarter interception was his second in as many weeks. The last time

a Cougar had interceptions in consecutive games was Husain Abdullah during the 2007 season: vs. Idaho (9/15) and at USC (9/22).

• WSU’s rushing total of 221 yards are the most by a Cougar team against an FBS foe since gaining 274 against UCLA, Oct. 27, 2007.

• Jeff Tuel’s 79 rushing yards are a career-high, eclipsing his previous mark of 34.• Senior receiver Daniel Blackledge matched his career-high with 76 receiving yards.

CALIFORNIA HIGHLIGHTS• Freshman Andrew Furney made his first career field goal, a 51-yarder, on his second ca-

reer attempt…he becomes the 10th Cougar to convert a field goal of 50 or more yards. • Aire Justin also recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.• Reid Forrest’s 84-yard punt is the second-longest in school history…the longest is 87

yards by Kyle Basler against Arizona in 2004. • C.J. Mizell tied his career high with 12 tackles…also recorded 12 against Oregon Oct. 9

of this season.

ARIZONA STATE HIGHLIGHTS• Reid Forrest’s first punt of the fourth quarter moved him past Kyle Basler as WSU’s

all-time career punt yardage leader. Entering the game Forrest needed 186 yards to tie Basler (10,794) and his fifth punt gave him 10,845 career punt yards. Forrest also tied Basler with 255 career punts.

• Reid Forrest’s first punt of 64 yards was his fourth punt of 60 or more yards this sea-son and ninth of his career. Forrest also had 3 punts of more than 50 yards, giving him 15 for the season and 46 for his career.

• Sophomore quarterback Jeff Tuel has passed for 200-plus yards in each game this season, the only Pac-10 quarterback to do so. The last Cougar QB to throw for more than 2009 yards in nine consecutive games was Jason Gesser (2002).

STANFORD HIGHLIGHTS• Kevin Kooyman’s second quarter interception was the first of his career and the first

by a defensive lineman since Toby Turpin recorded one against USC, Sept. 22, 2007.• Freshman Deone Bucannon recorded back-to-back double-digit tackles in consecu-

tive games, with 16 last week against Arizona and 15 against Stanford. Last season Xavier Hicks had three-straight games of double-digit tackles. He is the first true freshman to record back-to-back games of double-digit tackles since Greg Trent in 2005.

• Senior punter Reid Forrest’s 64-yard punt tied the second-longest punt of his career and was a season-long. A 60-yard punt in the third quarter was his eighth career punt of 60-plus yards.

WASHINGTON STATE GAME NOTES - GAME 12 vs. WASHINGTON

Head Coach Paul WulffPaul Wulff enters his third season on the Cougar sideline after being named Washington’s State’s 31st head coach, Dec. 10, 2007. With his appointment Wulff became the first WSU football letterwinner and graduate to lead the Cougars since Phil Sarboe served as head coach from 1945-49. A 1990 graduate of WSU and a four-year letterwinner, Wulff’s first season leading the Cougars proved difficult as the transition to a new head coach combined, with numerous injuries, resulted in a 2-11 record. WSU’s lone conference win came in dramatic fashion as the Cougars needed a last-second field goal in regulation, and again in double overtime, to defeat Washington 16-13 in the Apple Cup.

Wulff’s second season was once again marred by injuries, yet progress was being made as 13 freshmen and 23 players overall made their first-collegiate starts. The bright spot of the year came in week three as WSU fought back from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat SMU in overtime, 30-27.

Prior to Washington State, Wulff spent the previous 15 seasons at Eastern Washington University, the final eight as head coach. There he amassed a record of 53-40. During his eight-year head coaching tenure Wulff was named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year three times (2001, 2004, 2005) and led the Eagles into the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs three times in the last four years. He enters the 2010 campaign with a 56-62 career head coaching record in 10 seasons.

In 2007 he guided the Eagles to a 9-4 mark, including a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs, falling to two-time defending champion Appalachian State. It marked the seventh time in his eight years at Eastern that his teams posted winning records. Wulff began his coaching career at EWU in 1993 as a volunteer assistant working with the offensive line. He was named offensive line/strength coach the following season and spent four years in the position before being promoted to offensive coordinator/offensive line/strength coach in 1998.

Following two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator, Wulff was named head coach at Eastern prior to the 2000 season. He guided the Eagles to six-straight winning seasons and seven overall during his eight-year tenure.

Wulff’s 2005 team was loaded with experience, talent and leadership, featuring a group of seniors that included the Big Sky’s Offensive and Defensive MVP’s (Erik Meyer and Joey Cwik), and featured a trio of All-Americans (Meyer, Eric Kimble and Matt Alfred). Meyer would go on to win the Walter Payton Award as the best football player in the Football Championship Subdivision. Together, Meyer and Kimble rewrote Eastern’s record book as they combined for 27 school records and four Big Sky marks. Meyer set a FCS record for passing efficiency rating (166.47 with 10,261 yards, 84 touchdowns, just 17 interceptions and a .657 completion rate), while Kimble’s 46 touchdown grabs ranked second in FCS history behind the 50 of legendary Jerry Rice. The Eagles finished 7-5 and won the Big Sky title with a 5-2 record before losing to eventual national runner-up Northern Iowa in the first round of the playoffs. The 2004 season was also special, even after the Eagles opened the season 0-2. Eastern won eight of its next nine games - most by substantial margins - as the Eagles closed the year with a 51-44 overtime victory at Montana State to secure a place in the playoffs. Quarterback Erik Meyer was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award. Senior offensive tackle Michael Roos joined Meyer, wide receiver Eric Kimble and guard Rocky Hanni as All-Americans, with Roos eventually being taken in the second round of the NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans.

In 2004, Wulff’s squad finished 9-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the playoffs. The crowning glory came when the Eagles knocked off No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Southern Illinois in the first round. Wulff coached 21 players to 54 Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) All-America honors in his first seven years at the helm of the EWU program, and two more of his players were named to the Sports Network’s 2007 FCS All-America team at the conclusion of last year. Of the 21 players to earn All-America recognition, 15 have been offensive lineman. As a student-athlete and four-year starter at center for the Cougars from 1986-89, Wulff was an All-America honoree himself as a senior, earning honorable mention accolades from The Sporting News. Wulff started at center under three different coaches after redshirting in 1985. He played for Jim Walden in 1986, Dennis Erickson from 1987-88 and Mike Price in 1989. He was also the starting center on WSU’s 1988 Aloha Bowl championship team. After a successful collegiate career Wulff had a brief pro career as a center after graduating from WSU in 1990. He signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets, but was released after injuring an ankle and a rib in the preseason. He played in spring 1991 with Raleigh-Durham of the World League, then played in spring 1992 with New York-New Jersey. A 1985 graduate of Davis High School in Davis, Calif., Wulff played for three different coaches while he was at WSU. He redshirted in 1985 and started four games at guard in 1986 under Jim Walden.

Dennis Erickson directed the program in 1987 and 1988 with Wulff as his starting center both years. In 1988, the Cougars were victorious in the Aloha Bowl as Wulff earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 Conference honors. Under Mike Price in 1989, Wulff earned second-team all-conference honors and was an honorable mention selection on The Sporting News All-America squad. He was also WSU’s long snapper during his stay there. Wulff was born Feb. 25, 1967, in Woodland, Calif. He and his wife Sherry have a daughter, Katie, and two sons, Max and Sam.
