THE BIG DUEL: The Dodgers, fresh off their first sweep of the season
and currently riding a four-game winning streak, return home tonight to
begin a six-game homestand and play the first contest of a three-game
series against the NL East’s Washington Nationals. This Dodgers-
Nationals series will feature some strong pitching matchups, but none
bigger than tonight when three-time Cy Young award winner Clayton
Kershaw takes on three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer.
Tonight will be the first regular-season matchup between the two
decorated hurlers since Sept. 7, 2008 when Scherzer was making his
fourth-career start with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kershaw was
taking the mound for the 18th time in his rookie season. The Dodgers
won that contest at Dodger Stadium, 5-3, and neither pitcher factored in
the decision or pitched beyond the fifth inning.
Kershaw and Scherzer did meet in Game 1 of the 2016
National League Division Series, with Kershaw’s squad
coming away with the 4-3 victory.
The Dodgers and Nationals split their six games last season
with each team scoring exactly 16 runs in the series.
Following the Nationals series this weekend, the Dodgers will
continue their homestand next week with three games against
the NL East’s Miami Marlins from Monday-Wednesday.
This evening is the Dodgers’ third installment of Friday Night
Fireworks presented by Denny’s and the theme will be music
form the 1980s. Tomorrow is Cody Bellinger Bobblehead
Night presented by Spectrum and the series finale will be a
nationally televised game on ESPN and the Dodgers’ first Viva
Los Dodgers presented by Coca-Cola and Spectrum of the
season prior to the game. Also on Sunday, the first 12,000 kids
14 and under will receive a Jr. Dodgers Bat Bag presented by
Hi-Chew.
LIVING LEGENDS: The pitching matchup tonight features two of the
best pitchers of any generation and the numbers bear that out. Since
2011, Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer have accounted for five of
the last seven NL Cy Young awards (2011, ’13-14, ’16-17) and rank
right at the top in many categories over the last 3+ seasons:
Clayton Kershaw & Max Scherzer, NL Ranks Since 2015

Max Scherzer .208

NATIONALLY RANKED: Dodger starter Clayton Kershaw will
make his fourth start of the season tonight, as he looks to win his 10th
consecutive start against Washington. Amazingly, Kershaw’s run vs. the
Nationals began on April 27, 2012 and since then he is 9-0 with a 0.92
ERA (7 ER/68.2 IP) and a .151 opponents’ average against the Nats.
During this time, Kershaw has struck out 82 and walked just seven.
According to STATS, LLC, Kershaw is trying to become the
first pitcher since Yovani Gallardo to win 10 straight starts
against an opponent. Gallardo did so against the Astros from
Aug. 14, 2009 until Sept. 16, 2012.
Kershaw currently ranks seventh in the NL with a 1.73 ERA
(5 ER/26.0 IP) and fifth with 31 strikeouts.
RECENCY BIAS: The Dodgers and Nationals have been the two best
regular season teams in baseball the last six years:
MLB, Most Wins – Since 2012
Los Angeles Dodgers 567
Washington Nationals 564
St. Louis Cardinals 554
New York Yankees 535
Cleveland Indians 531
THAT’S OFFENSIVE: The Dodgers have scored at least seven runs
in four consecutive games, including a season-high 13 on Wednesday
night. According to STATS, LLC, the last time the Dodgers scored
seven or more runs in five consecutive games was last year from June
17-21 against the Reds and Mets.
THE KEY COG: Dodger catcher Yasmani Grandal has been the best
hitter on the club thus far, as he is tied for second in the NL with a .352
average (19-for-54) and also ranks among the National League leaders
in OPS (1.047, 4th), on-base percentage (.435, 6th) and slugging
percentage (.611, 6th). Grandal is one of the few Dodger catchers in
franchise history to have an OPS over 1.000 in the season’s first month:
Dodgers Catchers, Highest OPS in March/April – All-Time

1977 Steve Yeager 1.117

1973 Joe Ferguson 1.050
2018 Yasmani Grandal 1.047 (.435 + .611)

PITCHING IN: The Dodgers’ 3.72 ERA ranks eighth in the NL, but
they are making the opposition earn it as their 45 walks are the fewest
on the senior circuit. Just two teams in baseball have issued fewer free
passes than the Dodgers, as the Oakland A’s have walked 44 and the
Cleveland Indians have walked 38 hitters.
Los Angeles currently holds the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio
in the National League with a 4.16 (187 K/45 BB) mark. The
Dodgers posted the highest strikeout-to-walk ratio in the NL
last season (3.50), while ranking second to the Indians (3.98)
for the big league lead.
The Dodgers have averaged 10.24 strikeouts per nine innings,
which ranks second in the NL, trailing just the Nationals
(10.50).
FIELDS OF GOLD: In celebration of Earth Day this afternoon, the
Dodgers joined City Plants in planting 60 trees in Sycamore Grove Park
with middle schoolers from the Arroyo Seco Museum Science Magnet.
Dodger right-hander Josh Fields and Dodger Alumni Billy Ashley and
Matt Luke attended the event, which took place just five miles from
Dodger Stadium. The project supports the ongoing reforestation efforts
of the City to maintain and preserve L.A.’s parks, which over the past
few years have faced decline due to die out and climate issues.
JUSTIN TIME: Congratulations to Dodger minor league right-hander
Justin DeFratus, who this week was named Double-A Texas League
Pitcher of the Week after a week in which he did not allow an earned
run in two starts (11.1 IP) for Double-A Tulsa, including a 6.0-inning
scoreless performance on April 7. For his efforts, DeFratus was
promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City and made the start last night,
giving up just one run on six hits and earning the victory at Round Rock.
DeFratus, 30, pitched in parts of five seasons for the Phillies from 2011-
15, going 7-6 with a 4.08 ERA in 191 relief appearances.
DIGGING THE BEAN BALL: Dodger second baseman Chase Utley
was hit by a pitch for the 200th time in his 16-year career Tuesday and is
now one of eight players in Major League history to be hit by a pitch
200 or more times. The active leader in hit by pitches is slashing .343
(12-for-35)/.455/.514 with five runs, three doubles, a homer and eight
RBI in 14 games to start the season.
