Very Sadly Disappointed-
Negro Democrats Not Faring Wellin Washington D C
West Virginia TimesThose Negroes who were deluded
into thinking that he had succeeded-in ingrafting himself into the Demo-cratic and ingratiating himselfinto their good favor find this to be asad mistake when it comes time tohand around the good thingsThey were promised everythingshort of the Presidency and be-
ing a Cabinet Member and whenthe showdown comes the verybest they get is to be a cuspidor washer around WashingtonThere are today in and around Washington scores of Negroes vno sup-ported the Democratic party and they
there asking that they be takescare of and bile they are waitingdon t get it in your mind that theyare living on flowery beds of easefor this will be about the greatestmistake you ever made in your lifeYou may further put this down as asafe and sane proposition that aboutone out of every two hundred willget something to do and when he getsit it will be such a position as thecommon ordinary Negro who belonged to the Republican party wheii itwas in power in Congress would havescorned Could there be greaterproof of the fact of what the Democrats in this State intend to do assoon as they get a chance Whatfigure does the wish of any particular Democrat cut when he gets on thefloor of the House and is bound bythe planks in the platform of hisparty He might like to give Jim-a good berth but the Democraticparty says you just let Jim staywhere he is this is not Jims partyand you may put it down that Jimwill stay there The Bee of Washing-ton says the requisites that must appear on the part of a Negro Democratseeking position are
First In what State district andcounty he voted last
For whom did he voteThird How long has he been a
Negro Democrat and further citesone instance of a Negro Democratfrom West Virginia hunting a jobWe dont doubt brother Chases wordon this but if he will take the trouble to investigate it is dollars todoughnuts that this gentleman whoweas the burning sunhas self constituted and self delegatedhimself as coining from this Stateand when the truth is ascertained itwill in all probability be found thathe came from way down inthe cornfields of Mississippihad a few over here who went offafter strange gods but they have soseriously and solemnly repented thatwe feel that there will be no furthertrouble along that line The Democratic party in power in the lowerHouse in Washington in order tomake a show at economy and at thesame time to have some excuse fornot placing their newly acquired Negro constituents abolished 182000worth of places that had been pre-viously held by Negroes Did wesay abolished perhaps transferredmight be better for white men youngwhite men young white Democratstire being daily appointed to the socalled abolished positions and yetthere are some Negroes foolishenough to try to argue themselvesinto a frenzy about what the Republican party will not do for them andwhat the Democratic party does forthem The Times is not bridlednor is it following any partybut if anybody on the other side cansee anything the Democratic partydoes for the Negro to induce him tojoin their ranks we yield in such a
favor and i he can show us wewill take back alp we have said bttuntil this is done we are from Mis-souri
A NEGRO EDITOR CONDEMNSKENTUCKS LATEST
BARBARITYThe White Press and Pulpit Strangely
SilentTo the Editor of the Bee As a
member of the Negro race and knowing you as I do I ask that you giveme space in your valuable paperwhich is largely read by both racesto say a few words anent the treatment of Negroes in this country butmore especially to those poor and unfortunate Negroes who are residing-in the Southland You reserving theright as what should or should not bepublished in your paper I trust thatyou will see your way clear and publish same for me
To begin with I desire to call theattention of readers to the special dispatch from Kentucky to the Washington Post ofApril 20 1911 which reads as followsLouisville Ky April 20 Kentucky
established a new record intoday when a mob in Livermore tookM Potter a Negro who had killed awhite man from hanged him onthe stage of the local onera house andcharged admission for persons to enter and shoot at the body hangingabove the footlights-
It is reported that the money takenin at the door went to the family ofthe white man the Negro had killedThose who orchestra seats hadthe privilege of emptying their sixshooters at the swaying form abovethem but gallery occupants were limited to one shot The town isreported still in possession of themobGentle reader the lynching is badenough but when a set of barbarians after lynching a man who wasin chains in the jail in consequence

of which was defenseless and thenafter killing him in such an unmercifulmanner charge admission fee for thepurpose of on their foul deedand receipt to the family ofthe dead man beyond allhuman civilization It is worse thanany time preceding the Christian eraIt is Barbarism pales intoinsignificance and the civilized worldstands aghast with such a crime
The killing or lynching of the Ne-gro Potter is the most brutal the mostdastardly the most fiendish act thatcould be perpetrated upon any humanbeing least of all upon the body of adead man who was lynched by a setof white marauders who constitutejudges jurors wherever there is an alleged crime committed by NegroesBut this time the poor Negro did notcommit that nameless crime whichhas always suspended him in the airwhether he is guilty or not guilty andwhich is always used as sign forwholesale butchery of Negroes
The crime of course is an abominable one when perpetrated and tendsto anger both white and blacK people and no man abominates thatcrime more than the man who nowwrites this article but it proves conclusively this time that that is notthe only offense that he is subjected-to to pay a death penalty
To talk of the Dark Continent totalk of sendinp missionaries to foreignlands for the purpose of civilizing andChristianizing others is such a mockery on Christianity that I fail to understand why such a farce is not stoppedNow
where is civilization Where-is religion Where is law Where isjustice Where is right Where ishumanity Is the grand old Commonwealth of Kentucky of which I am acitizen retrograding with its splendidschools with its magnificent collegesand universities with its accomplished-and learned professors is the oldcommonwealth verging towards barbarism savagery sansculottismWhere in the world is the commonwealth Where are its laws Whereare the conservators of the peaceWhere is Christianity Is justice fledfrom the bosom of the white people-in Kentucky I hope not
This atrocious deed which is a bloton the fair State was perpetratedupon the defenseless Negro not because he was charged with havingcommitted rape for indeed when such-a cry is made it not only stirs thewhite people of the country but theNegroes too feel it as keenly asmuch as any other human being andthere are instances where Negroeshave given tfieir in hunting downreckless and abominable men whohave robbed women of their virtueBut it happened that this is the merekilling of a white man who no doubthad brought it upon himself by hisoverbearing manner as is usually thecase when a Negro kills a white man
This question of revenge and cruelty is not one of sentiment nor one formawkish oratory but is a iiiestioiithat goes to the very foundation ofthe wellbeing of human society andconcerns the humanizing social mor-al and civil salvation elevation andevolution of the best gifts graces accomplishments of that portion of thehuman family who for centuries havebeen denuded of all human rightscivil and political privileges by theircousins and halfbrothers and sistersof the sons of Shem and Japhet whofor centuries arrogated to themselvesall the rights and privileges of thehighest forms of modern civilizationbased upon Christianity
Again those Negro haters suchmen as Vardaman Dixon Tillmanand others of their ilk who castigatethe Negro for his shortcomings haveforgotten that they have had thousands of years ahead of the Negroand yet there are thousands of factspatent to the most unintelligent andunobservant to stultify the broad assertions of the blatant caricaturists inall parts of the world outside of theUnited States not to mention the uncounted number within Uncle Sams
relation to the Ne-groes notwithstanding their authorsThomas Jefferson Dr Field and
others with respect to the degeneracy-of the Negro-
It is now too late for any sane manbe he who he may to stigmatize theNegro for shortcomings deficienciesignominious habits and abominabledegeneracies for the existence ofwhich the men like Vardaman andhis sublime accomplices were responsible as had it in their power for hundreds of years to have rais-ed the Negro to a higher plane of civ-
ilization and Christianity which theyguiltily and knowingly omitted to doand then turn round and accuse theNegro of every conceivable and incon-ceivable literary artistic and scientificdeficiency
But after all their boasted civilization does not make them better citizens than the poor Negro who hashad no civilization to thewhite mans idea of civilization
Many Negroes have beenwithout the least provocation although it is said that we are ma Christian land In conclusion letrre say that the while man has notdone his duty in way of protecting theNegroes in this country
Yours for the raceD JOHNSON

America Is The Best Place
Liberia Rather a Cheerless Country-as Viewed by Bishop Scott
From New York SunIsaiah Scott of the African
Methodist Episcopal Church who hasjurisdiction the Negroes of theRepublic if Liberia arrived yesterdayby the White Star liner Baltic Hehas a poor opinion of the majority ofthe members of his tropical diocese
The men sometimes have morewives than one and let them do thework Bishop Scott said There aremany tribal wars because of womensold as children to become the wives
I of chiefs and who get tired of thechiefs attentions The Bishop doesnot encourage the effort to get American Negroes to remove to Liberiawhere he says the chances of improvement are slight He said therewas no better place for the AmericanNegro than America
Liberia will elect a new Presidenttomorrow for a term of four years instead of two as heretofore

The New Rochelle DinnerFrom New Rochelle N Y Standard
JournalThe annual dinner of the Colored
Republican Club of New Rochelle lastTuesday night was an event of whichthe Negroes of New Rochellle havejust reason to be proud This is es-
pecially true of the officers and members of the club who have given theirtime money and labor to build up agood organization Those who attended the dinner will be able to recallwith pleasure the splendid gathering-of men and women the deliciousmenu and the good speeches that followed the repast Negroes will be especially proud of the able address ofHon Charles W Anderson the principal speaker of the evening who keptthe diners cheering and laughing alternately throughout his clever speechWe believe that the prominent whiteofficials of New Rochelle who attended the dinner will have an added
for the race and its possibilitiesafter witnessing an event such as thisThe presence of Mayor Colwell MrScherp and other local officials is initself an evidence of the growing recognition and respect for Negroes whoshow that they are capable and deserving
Chief Griffins Thanks
Washington D C May i 1911My Dear Friend I desire to thank
you personally for the service yourendered the Washington Division ofthe Grand Fountain of the United Order of True Reformers by your wordsof encouragement during its greatstruggle to redeem itself and havethe license renewed-
I believe it was Gods way of testing true friendship and love for humanity Because of the determinedstand taken by some of our real raceleaders in defense of the organizationthat has made so many hearts gladand so many homes happy and theloyalty displayed by the membersthemselves the Insurance Commissioner of Virginia lifted the suspension of our license and we are nowdoing business as in former yearsHad we lost hope and allowed the order to die other Negro organizationswould have stumbled over the deadhones of the True Reformers for theiiext twentyfive year
We have collected in the past sixmonths during our inactivity morethan seventyfive thousand dollars
75000 This will give you someidea what we can do when allowed towork
Special concessions have beengranted to all unbenefited memberswho may desire to return as well as aspecial dispensation of three 300dollars to new members which willend Sept I 1911
Thanking you again for your sympathy expressed and asking your continued encouragement I am yours forsuccess

Will It ComeMuch interest is attached to the
visit of Julius Rosenwald of Illinois-to this city Thursday among officialsof the local Y M C A and citizens-in general Mr Rosenwald recentlyoffered 25000 to the colored branchof any city that would raise 75000toward the construction of a Y MC A building The construction ofthe colored mens branch on I2thStreet between S and T Streets had
and was well under way whenMr Rosenwald made his offer Thisfact however did not discourage theofficials of the Association and theirefforts to get the 25000 seems to bemeeting with success
Mr Rosenwald and Judge J WMack of the Commerce Court incompany Johnson secretary of the branch recently made athorough inspection of the buildingnow in course of construction Ef-forts are being made to have thebuilding come within the offer of MrRosenwalds 25000 Although liedid not commit himself it is the gen-eral consensus of opinion that hebe persuaded into considering favorably the claims of the 12th Streetbranch
Dont Indorse Him
West Virginia McDonald TimesHoward University is having an up
heaval over the dismisal of two of heryoung professors whom the President W P Thirkield alleges areguilty of conduct unbecoming tutorsThe allegation second handed is thatthe young men were seen to havetaken a drink of intoxicating beverage and without trial were dismissedby being asked to resign The pressof the country is much on thesubject but the weight of the evidence and the consensus of opinion-is that the president acted withoutdue consideration in the matter and-a new trial has been asked for Upto this time the case has not been reopened It seems to be a well established fact that President Thirkield isnot any too favorably disposed towardthe higher education for the NegroAlthough an Ohio man most of hiseducational life has been spent inGeorgia where it is thought he imbibed the Southern idea
