• The purpose of the ALT is to divide the work of managing an Area between many hands
• Provides the foundation for enhanced services

• An ALT is a working team, not an advisory Team or governing board, which is directed by the Area Director.
• It may or may not include all the members listed, and may include other positions you have found
necessary in managing the tasks of your Area

Area Accreditation
Accreditation Intro:
• Fully implemented in 2017
• The name Special Olympics and its logo are copyrighted.
• SOWA is granted permission to use this name and logo by Special Olympics, Inc.
• SOWA grants this privilege to sub-Programs (Area level) through adherence to SOWA policies, through the annual accreditation process and adherence to the Area minimum standards.
Accreditation Process:
The Area accreditation process serves three principle functions:
1. Ensures a standard of quality and uniformity among all programs
within Washington
2. Assists SOWA in formulating program goals
3. Facilitates the evaluation of existing programs and enables
individual programs to highlight strengths, challenges and
formulate future plans, thus maintaining a quality program

The Area’s accreditation is received at the State Office andwill be reviewed. It is then assessed to determine thestatus outlined as:

• Each area will develop a budget that should tell SOWA everything they need to spend money for in 2016.
• The budget will also tell SOWA how much the area plans to raise, or use from existing balances (from previous fundraising) to cover those expenses
• SOWA will supplement area funding to meet the approved budget

2. Area Director combines all local budgets 3. Area Director and ALT compare budgets to Area Plan for
programming and expansion to identify additional needs4. Area Director submits a complete budget to SOWA

separate from SOWA HQ.• Each Area will have an ledger in that account.• Teams may have a ledger within the Area account.• ALL FUNDS RAISED LOCALLY WILL BE CONSIDERED
RESTRICTED FUNDS AND MUST BE SPENT FOR THE TEAM OR AREA.
• Areas and Teams will receive quarterly reports so they can verify activity.
