Double award success for Mansfield’s swim coach A coach who has trained Mansfield's most successful swimmers has won two top awards in a week. Glenn Smith, Mansfield District Council's Swim Coach and Development Officer, received the prestigious Para-Coach of the Year Award for 2015 from the British Swimming Coaches Association. The award was presented at the association's 50th anniversary swim coaching conference, which took place in Birmingham from 25 to 27 September. Glenn, who coaches Paralympic swimming champions Ollie Hynd MBE and Charlotte Henshaw, also won the Para Swimming Coach of the Year Award at the inaugural British Swimming Awards on Saturday (3 October). Ollie Hynd was shortlisted for Athlete of the Year. Ollie and Charlotte both train at the Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex and belong to the Nottinghamshire ASA County Swim Squad, Nova Centurion - Mansfield Squad. They have worked their way to the top of British, European and world tables and achieved numerous records and medals. Glenn said winning both awards was overwhelming. He said: "These awards are as much for Ollie and Charlotte as they are for me.  The highlight of the past year was the world championships where Ollie won two gold medals and broke his brother Sam’s world record. Charlotte won a silver medal and broke two European records in the same day. You can’t get much better than that. Now we are working hard towards the Paralympics in Rio next year." Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: "To win two prestigious awards in a week is testament to Glenn's drive, professionalism and commitment to sport within the district. On behalf of the council, thank you for your continued hard work - you make Mansfield and this council very proud." Glenn could make it a hat-trick later this month as he is nominated in The Brian Clough OBE – Manager/Coach of the Year award at the Nottingham Sports Awards 2015. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at the East Midlands Conference Centre on 29 October. November 2015 & District News Remember, remember the fifth of November...

Well it’s that time again, no sooner is one edition out then I’m starting another. Where does the time go? I was fortunate to pick the right week to spend at home, the weather was good and I managed to get some gardening done. Boyes should be opening soon, they have been recruiting for staff and a new hot tub shop is opening where the mobile phone shop and price freeze were. It’s a real shame that Cozy Corner café has closed but there’s a new café opening in what used to be the cars sales garage just round the corner from Hetts Lane School. Netto should be putting a planning application in soon but it will depend on whether the Strand can be demolished, watch this space.Editor, Tania [email protected] General tasks and

garden maintenanceTidy bordersCut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly (sedum, astilbes and grasses for example). They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease.

Clean out the greenhouseClear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!

Drain and lagSave yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.

Prepare your soil for next yearFor beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould - in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier! For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms! If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

PlantingPlant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes (see later). Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed.

Rake fallen leavesFallen leaves prevent light and air getting to plants and lawns and these dark, damp conditions are also heaven on earth for slugs, snails and an unwholesome array of fungal diseases. However, don’t waste these tumbled treasures - given time they will decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’! Rake them up and throw into a simple frame made of chicken wire or wood. Failing that, black bin liners spiked with air holes will do if you can bear the sight, but remember to dampen the leaves first should they be dry (some hope!). Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. Don’t be tempted to use rose leaves, which can easily carry infection, or evergreens, which take too long to rot down.Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

Alorafocus Support GroupAlorafocus supports anyone affected by cancer/life changing illness. Alorafocus has been running a long time (1987 – formerly Mansfield self help cancer group) But because we had members for all the surrounding areas including Shirebrook, we decided to change the name. The group was set up by a small group of people who themselves had suffered the fear, pain and life-changing effects of cancer/life changing illness, and has a wide diversity of members, ranging in age from young adults to members who are in their 80’s.Members are drawn from the local community, and surrounding areas and have an ongoing calendar of events to suit everyone. We have a core group of members who volunteer to organise the group activities, supportline etc, and we have been lucky enough to have a range of volunteer therapists who offer their time and skills free of charge.Through their passion and determination to support others in situations similar to themselves, the group has grown into the unique organisation it is today.Cancer and life changing illness can have a huge impact on all family members.Families can experience an array of emotions; • Fear • Worry • Stress • Isolation • Physical/mentalHealthdeterioration  We meet every 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from 18:30-21:00 hrs at the Patchills Centre, Patchills (off Eakring Rd), Mansfield, Notts NG19 3BS Carmel Harkness, Coordinator

November is not a month that you associate with wildflowers. However, the few flowers that survive into early winter can brighten up a walk and some of the blooms that get overlooked in favour of their more glamourous neighbours earlier in the year get a chance to be noticed. Last November I noticed Scabious, Knapweed, Daisy, Dandelion and Ragwort still flowering at this time of year.If the grasslands are lacking colour some of our hedgerows should still be full of the fruit that will feed the birds during the next few months. This year some hedges seem to be full of haws and sloes whist others are almost bare. I suspect that the variable summer weather may have had a greater impact on some sites. If you are walking near the river, keep an eye open for Little Egrets. These birds look like a small white heron and they have been visiting the area upstream from Stone Bridge for the past couple of winters and they may soon be returning. Once the trees overhanging the river have lost their leaves, we will have an improved chance of spotting an elusive kingfisher. The shorter day length also makes a sighting more likely.I will make my annual reminder to check any bonfires for hedgehogs before you light them. There are fewer hedgehogs around these days although some folk are lucky enough to have one visiting their garden to help with the slug control. Now that we have finished mowing along footpaths for the year, this group will now be turning our attention to grassland and tree management. However, if the forecast bad weather arrives, we may have to clear paths of vegetation that was collapsed under the weight of snow! Our next monthly walk is on Saturday 21st November. Get in touch if you would like to join us for a walk of about five or six miles in the local countryside. We usually meet at 10am at Warsop Library but times, meeting places and even the date may change, so check details with us before turning up.

WARSOP POLICE UPDATE

Every year we receive numerous complaints about the misuse of fireworks and, as we know, people are still maimed and killed as a result of their misuse. On the flipside, for Warsop, over the last few years we have received very few complaints relating to the use and abuse of fireworks.

Regulation 4 of the Firework Regulations 2004 makes it an offence for any person under the age of 18 to possess any firework in a public place or any place to where the public have access (except indoor fireworks such as caps, cracker snaps, novelty matches, party poppers, serpents, sparklers or throw downs).

Regulation 5 prohibits any person from possessing a Category 4 firework, whether in a public place or not.

Regulation 7 creates a curfew on the use of fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am with the following exceptions: (a) Chinese New Year - 1am (the following day) to 7 am (b) 5 November - 12 midnight to 7 am (c) Diwali - 1am (the following day) to 7 am (d) 31 December - 1am (the following day) to 7 am.

Regulation 9 states that no person will supply fireworks to the general public outside the following periods, unless they hold the appropriate license: • FourdaysbeforeandincludingthedayofDiwali. • FourdaysbeforeandincludingthedayoftheChineseNewYear. • Sixdaysbeforethe31December. • Threeweeksbeforeandfivedaysafter5November.Remember to stay safe.As you know, earlier this year, the beat team was giving security advice to you in relation to getting out your garden tools and furniture in preparation for the gardening season. Remember, as the patio furniture is started to be packed away and the garden tools are made redundant for another year, that security around out buildings and garages is maintained. Once these items are put away sometimes it is not until the beginning of next year that the perimeters of sheds are inspected for damage or thefts. Gardening tools and pedal cycles are prime targets for thieves. Mark your property and register it with Immobilise. Chain items together where possible and do not forget to lock doors and windows. Finally, make sure that your home insurance covers these belongings. Should you want your property security marking, please contact your beat team. Nottinghamshire residents are being reminded to be on their guard for doorstep traders offering to carry out house or garden

As another year is nearly over and Bonfire Night approaches, we’d like to remind everyone of the rules and regulations associated with the use and possession of fireworks.

improvements over the last few weeks of this summer. Common scams include carrying out minor roof repairs and then claiming more expensive work to the roof is required, which is often unnecessary and carried out at an inflated price. Residents are also not getting written quotes before the work is carried out and the trader inflates the original quoted price at the end of the project.Residents considering home improvements are far better to get a recommendation of a reputable trader from a friend or relative, or use Buy with Confidence list of approved traders. For more information visit www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk Be alert to burglars who may pose as trades people or officials from utility companies. They often target the elderly and vulnerable to gain access to homes in order to steal money and valuables. It is your right to say who enters your house and who doesn’t.If you don’t know the person knocking on the door, or you feel that they are not genuine, don’t let them in. These criminals could be men, women or even children and can be working as a group or alone.

She takes up the role in time for World Mental Health Day, which is the annual global celebration of mental health education, awareness and advocacy, on Saturday 10 October. The theme for 2015 is Dignity in Mental Health. The Mental Health Challenge was set up by Centre for Mental Health, Mental Health Foundation, Mind, MHPF, Rethink Mental Illness, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and YoungMinds who are working together to improve mental health across England. The council agreed it would now look at how mental health issues could be taken into account in the services it provides. It will also look at ways it can work alongside partner organisations to contribute to a range of actions. The actions include working to reduce inequalities and tackling discrimination in mental health in the local community and encouraging positive mental health among the council's own workforce.Cllr Probert, who has been a volunteer for the Samaritans for

five and a half years and has been involved in fundraising for the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “One in four people will suffer from mental health issues during their life time. This is something that affects all of us and I want to blast away the stigma around mental health problems. I have known people who have suffered with depression and I know how hard it is for them.“I will be using my new role to raise awareness among councillors and staff of mental health issues and looking for ways that we can actively support people in our community.”Cllr Andrew Tristram, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and a representative on Nottinghamshire County Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board, said: "We recognise the importance of mental health and improving the health of people - both physically and mentally. This is a key part of the council's aim to improve the quality of life for residents and workers in the district."

Councillor takes up Mental Health Champion roleA Mental Health Champion has been appointed at Mansfield District Council as part of a charity-driven mental health challenge.Cllr Lee Probert, ward councillor for Yeoman Hill, was appointed after councillors voted in favour of a motion at a recent full council meeting.

Abanazar has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is a psychopath with a lust for power.”He added: “I’ve made a career out of playing baddies. When I was in my 20s, I used to play boy next door type roles, but as I got older, I started to look like a villain… I like frightening people!”The switch on will feature a Christmas parade near the library at 2pm and finally Santa himself will turn on the Christmas lights and start a magical firework display at the stage show in the Market Place from 3pm.Executive Mayor Kate Allsop said: “This will be a fantastic fun family occasion and will be a wonderful way to hail the season of goodwill so don’t stay at home - come along and get into the true spirit of Christmas in Mansfield.”The event is being organised by Mansfield District Council with Four Seasons Shopping Centre, Mansfield 103.2, Mansfield BID, the Palace Theatre and our supporting partners, 6 five 2s Taxis.Keep up-to-date with details of the event at www.mansfield.gov.uk/switchon.

The Battle of Hatfield Investigation Society is holding community days at The Oaklands Centre on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th November between 10am and 4pm. This will be a good opportunity to find out what has been discovered during their current investigations into the origins of the bones unearthed at Cuckney in 1950 and any possible connection with the death of King Edwin in 632. The team has also been researching the past of Cuckney and the surrounding landscape so there should be plenty of interesting information on display. More information is available online at battleofhatfield.webs.com and it would be a good idea to confirm details of the events nearer the time.If you have watched Time Team on TV and wondered what goes on behind the scenes of an archaeological investigation our Vikings of Sherwood project may be of interest to you. Starting in January we will be holding a series of free workshops leading up to an excavation on the site of Thynghowe where the parishes of Warsop, Budby and Edwinstowe meet. No previous experience is needed although you are expected to have attended the Archaeology Workshops if you wish to take part in the excavation. This project is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund. This is the provisional timetable as there may be changes due to weather conditions. Interim Chief Operating Officer appointedMansfield District Council has appointed Bev Smith as Interim Chief Operating Officer. The role will provide strategic and operational leadership and incorporates the duties of Returning Officer and Head of Paid Service - a legally required position.Bev Smith has been the council’s Corporate Director for Regeneration and Regulation since 2009. The Interim Chief Operating Officer will remain in post until 31 March 2016.The Executive Mayor Kate Allsop said: “Bev is an excellent officer, with considerable knowledge and experience and I am confident that she will provide valuable strategic and operational leadership over the coming months. Together we will be looking to develop and implement a permanent senior management structure that will meet our future needs. We will now focus on achieving our priorities and delivering the best possible services for the people in our community.”

Online payments and the 24-hour phone payment line will also be unavailable during this time and calls will be diverted to an answerphone to explain to customers what is happening.Payments can still be made at PayPoint and Post Offices using a barcoded document.“By reducing the ‘down time’ to overnight we hope that this will not cause undue problems for customers,” said Ian Kirk, the council’s Revenues and Customer Services Manager. “The end result will be well worth the disruption because it will mean people will be able to pay online and by phone, faster and with better security.”

The new system brings a number of added benefits to the council’s payment system, including: · Improved reliability with added security checks such as payment verification to ensure that correct payments are being made and received · The most up to date security features, in line with legislation and security industry standards for card payments · Better functionality because in time the council will be able to increase the number of services which can be paid.

Initially the new system will deal only with the council’s existing arrangements for paying council tax, rents, business rates, fixed penalty notices, invoices and for garden waste. The authority will shortly be making online and automated telephone payments available for other services, including arranging a bulky items collection or booking parks facilities, such as bowling or football pitches.

Council improves payment systemMansfield District Council is changing to an improved payment system which means residents will not be able to make payments for rent, council tax or other fees from 6pm on Monday 12 October to 9am on Tuesday 13 October.

THE ROYAL BRITISH

LEGIONNews update by:Pete Hopkins – Branch Secretary Tel: 07889 181026 Email: [email protected] Web: www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/warsop

We had a successful AGM at our October meeting, and we welcomed Kay Hickinbotham as the new branch secretary. It was a special occasion for Kay as she celebrated her 21st birthday the same day!The Poppy Appeal for 2015/2016 is well under way, with the first Poppy being bought at our launch by friend of the branch, Councillor John Allin. We have a trip to Doncaster airport to see Vulcan XH558 on the 17th November. Please ring or email if you would like to join us. The cost excluding transport is £12 per person, over 65’s £7.50. (Transport costs will be minimal as we are travelling by car)Have you or your spouse drawn 7 days pay from the Army, Navy or

RAF? If the answer is ‘yes’ you are a beneficiary of the Legion and may call on us for help in times of need. We are opening a ‘drop-in’ soon, in Warsop on one morning a month. Specially trained members will be available to speak to you, directing you to where you can get help. We are just awaiting finalisation of members training and we will then circulate further information. If you can’t wait for the ‘drop-in’ to open, please ring 0808 802 8080 (free).

Prayer VigilI know many in our community are concerned about the desperate plight of migrants who have fled from areas of war and persecution.  We cannot fully appreciate the conditions that have led to people leaving their homes, their country and all that they were familiar with but they must have been extreme for them to take such drastic action. We wished to show support for these people and held a Prayer Vigil from 7pm on Saturday October 3rd.  Boyes kindly gave us permission to assemble in their car park and over twenty of us were there for about an hour.  We said prayers, had Bible readings, heard an account written by a refugee, a moving report from Rev Keith Hebden who had visited the 'jungle' in Calais that week and we sang

hymns and songs.  We were also told of an initiative called Project Paddington which involves sending bears with a message of love to refugee children to let them know that we care. The bears will be accompanied by clothes and toiletries. Many plan to support this.We understand that Mansfield District Council were almost unanimous in their agreement, subject to Government funding, to accept twelve refugee families.  We commend them in this decision.Frances McLaughlinOn behalf of Churches Together in Warsop and District

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETYMeetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, at 7pm at the “Swing” (Vale Hotel), Warsop Vale. The evening includes, a talk by a guest speaker, a raffle and lively discussion with other members.
