At least, that’s what Bank of America research analyst John Murphy told reporters at an Au- tomotive Press Association luncheon held at the Detroit Ath- letic Club last week. Murphy said he’s been helping Bank of America put out its “Car Wars” annual analysis for the past 15 years. The report dates back to 1991. “It’s actually the fun part of my job talking about the future of the industry,” Murphy said. “I usually have to look at and an- swer questions about things like automotive pensions and labor issues.” The key factor to predicting things like future market share, Murphy said, is looking at vehi- cle replacement rates. Simply put, the more new and refreshed product a company puts out, the better its market share will tend to be. They also look at the aver- age showroom age of new vehi- cles for sale. He also talked about why the EyesOn Design show is impor- tant because of the money it rais- es for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. The ’64 Mercury Parkland con- vertible displayed at the show is owned by Virginia Jedryczka, daughter of the man who bought the vehicle after the World’s Fair closed. “My dad, Adolph Jedryczka, worked at Ford at the time of the fair,” Virginia said. “He always wanted a convertible and he bought it from Ford’s B-Lot in 1965.” Jedryczka said her father used the vehicle as his “everyday” car for several years, but it devel- oped some problems, so he put it in a barn with the idea of fixing them at a later date. Time stretched on and she eventually inherited the car. “We started a full restoration of the Mercury in 2010,” Jedrycz- ka said. “It was finished in time to appear at the Autorama show in February of 2013. The company forced out 15 workers last week after an outside attorney blamed them for failing to act on the problem. Five others were disci- plined. The meeting comes just days after former U.S. Attorney Anton Valukas issued a report that blamed an inefficient corporate structure and misconduct or poor decisions by some employ- ees for allowing a deadly defect in an ignition switch to go undis- closed for more than a decade. GM this year has recalled 2.6 million small cars with the faulty switches. They have been blamed for more than 50 crashes and at least 13 deaths. Barra further said GM may “tweak the structure here or there’’ but she doesn’t expect major changes. GM began reviewing past safe- ty issues after the ignition switch problem became public, result- ing in a total of 15.8 million re- called vehicles in North America. Buick partnered with BASF to sponsor a competition for CCS students, who were given a blank canvas to shape their vision of what new Buicks will look like in 2030. More than a dozen next-gener- ation transportation designers answered the call to compete and consult with industry profes- sionals. “Exploring their own outside- the-box ideas and new concepts in personal transportation, stu- dents brought their visions to life in 3D with scale-model Buicks,” said Buick spokesman Nick Richards. “The solutions these concepts offer are as unique as the future car designers at CCS who created them,” said Andrew Smith, exec- utive director of Buick global de- sign. “For Buick, this project is an in- vitation for new insights and in- terpretation of our brand and the future portfolio of products we will offer.” The competition guidelines ad- dressed future transportation needs – the dramatic rise in ur- ban populations, developing countries, nanotechnology and the role advanced materials will play in vehicle efficiency. A professional jury of Buick de- signers from the exterior, interi- or, and color and trim studios, along with BASF coatings and performance materials experts, selected four concepts for spe- cial recognition and $7,000 in awards: • Namsuk Lee, 28, from Seoul, Korea, with two awards - $3,000 for best overall concept and $1,500 for best interior; • Sam Kenny, 22, of Greens- boro, N.C. - $1,500 for best exteri- or design; • Justin Salmon, 19, of Boca Raton, Fla. - $1,000 for most inno- vative use of materials. GM’s ignition recall stretchesall the way to Europe.Between 2007 and 2010, GM

sold 7,450 Opel GTs, which wasbased on GM’s Kappa platform –the same platform as the PontiacSolstice and the Saturn Sky,which was also recalled becauseof ignition troubles.All the affected vehicles were

made at GM’s Wilmington Assem-bly plant in Delaware.According to a statement is-

sued by Opel in late March, Opeldeclared that the companywould replace all the switches inGTs sold in Europe by Opel be-tween 2007 and 2010.

Originally, Opel was just goingto recall GTs sold in 2007.In the recall statement, Opel

declared that the company was“unaware of any incidents or in-juries related to the ignitionswitch condition concerning theGT.”Opel stated that the company

would contact owners as soonas possible, but “until the con-dition is rectified, customersshould only use the ignition keywith nothing else on the keyring.”

General Motors will recall allcurrent generation Chevrolet Ca-maros because a driver’s kneecan bump the key fob and causethe key to inadvertently moveout of the “run” position, with acorresponding reduction or lossof power.The issue, which may primari-

ly affect drivers sitting close tothe steering column, was discov-ered by GM during internal test-ing following the ignition switchrecall earlier this year, said GMspokesman David Roman.The Camaro ignition system

meets all GM engineering specifi-cations and is unrelated to the ig-nition system used in ChevroletCobalts and other small cars in-cluded in the ignition switch re-call, Roman said. GM is aware ofthree crashes that resulted infour minor injuries that may beattributed to this condition.The company will change the

Camaro key so the ignition keyand fob are independent of eachother. Then, inadvertent contactwith the fob won’t move the keyfrom the “run” position.There are 464,712 Camaros

from the 2010-2014 model yearsin the U.S. included in the recall.

Including Canada, Mexico and ex-ports, the total recall populationis 511,528.Separately, GM also an-

nounced two safety recalls andone non-compliance recall in-volving a total of 65,121 cars inthe U.S. all three of which werereported to the NHTSA onWednesday, June 11. IncludingCanada, Mexico and exports, thetotal recall population is 69,839.In all cases, customers will re-

ceive letters from GM lettingthem know when they can bringtheir vehicles into a dealership,where the recall repairs will beperformed free of charge andcourtesy transportation wouldbe provided as needed.GM is also recalling:• 28,789 Saab 9-3 convertibles

that it is recalling 31,520 modelyear 2012 Buick Verano andChevrolet Camaro, Cruze andSonic compact cars because theair bags might not deploy.The problem affects a small

metal tab called a shorting bar,which is designed to keep the airbag from deploying while it is be-ing installed in the car. GM saysthe bar may come into contactwith the air bag electrical termi-nals. If that happens during acrash, the air bag won’t deploy.GM has already recalled 7,116

vehicles related to the problem.GM also said June 6 that it is

recalling 61 model year 2013-2014 Chevrolet Sparks and 2013model year Buick Encores be-cause of a passenger air bag de-fect and 33 model year 2014Chevrolet Corvettes because ashort circuit could disable airbags and also affect seatbelts.GM is also recalling 57,512 oth-

er autos because the base radiomay not work. That part soundsa warning if the key is in the igni-tion when the driver’s door isopened or if a front seat belt isnot buckled.The recall affects 2014 model

year Chevrolet Silverado LDs,2014 GMC Sierra LDs and 2015Silverado HDs, Tahoes, Subur-bans, GMC Sierra HDs, Yukonsand Yukon XLs.

the design strengths of our previ-ous supercharged engine,” saidLee, “and leverages the technolo-gies introduced on the CorvetteStingray – direct injection, cylin-der deactivation and continuous-ly variable valve timing – to takeCorvette performance to an all-new plateau.“Our new, very compact super-

charger also helps the enginemake power more quickly, and,perhaps more importantly, ithelps produce more torque earli-er in the rpm band.“It’s also worth mentioning

that the LT4’s supercar perform-ance numbers are achieved withan engine that is nearly the samesize as the very compact LT1 en-gine introduced in the 2014Corvette Stingray. The powerdensity of the LT4 makes it one of

picking up across the board,”Murphy said. “This is consistentwith a cyclical recovery and sup-ports U.S. auto demand and in-dustry-wide profits.”Murphy also said that the in-

dustry’s replacement rate shouldremain above its traditional aver-age at least until 2018.“Competitive pressure, new

entrants and product line expan-sion will continue to drive downthe industry’s average show-room age,” Murphy said. “Theaverage age for model year 2015through 2018 is about 2.5 years,down from three years, on aver-age, for the last decade.”Murphy also sees an emphasis

on light trucks and crossoverutility vehicles (CUVs), whichshould account for “53 percentof new volume in model years2015-2018.”“CUVs remain a growing seg-

ment, which light truck launcheswill accelerate through modelyears 2015-2018,” Murphy said.Those two categories should

see their market shares grow acombined 7 percent betweennow and model year 2018. Asautomakers’ replacement ratenumbers get closer to each oth-er, Bank of America believes thiswill result in smaller marketshare shifts in the future. Thisdiffers greatly from the last fewdecades where large shifts inmarket share was the norm.In the short term, Chrysler, GM

and Toyota will be launching rel-atively few models in the nexttwo years, Murphy said. Thatcould result in some marketshare changes for them. But overa four-year period (2014-2018)things should even out.Murphy said GM’s product

launches “remain solid in modelyears 2015-2017, but fade in mod-el year 2018, which should resultin a relatively flat market sharefor the four-year time horizon.”He said Ford looks to be in

solid shape for the next fouryears based on announced prod-uct launches, which increasinglytake advantage of the company’sglobal platforms.“However, as management re-

mains focused on maximizingprofits, market share may betraded for higher prices andprofits,” Murphy said.Chrysler should be able to

maintain market share betweennow and 2018, Murphy said, butits product rollout doesn’t pickup for about two years. Thatmakes the goal of gaining fourpoints of market share duringthat period difficult.What could upset all of this,

Murphy said, is if the Ford F-150

pickup truck proves to be thegamechanger Ford says it is.If the truck truly gets 30 mph

highway, then it would be thefirst heavy truck to not need off-set sales of smaller vehicles sothat a company’s fleet averagemeets EPA requirements.“Let’s face it,” Murphy said,

“Americans like driving biggervehicles. If Ford can sell a lot ofF-150s without having to sell a lotof Ford Fiestas, that means greatprofits.”Murphy said he believes Amer-

icans would pay more for a vehi-cle that was larger, but still gotgreat gas mileage.“Let’s face it, what would you

rather drive?” Murphy said. “AYukon that got 50 mpg or a Yaristhat got 50 mpg? I think we allknow the answer to that.”Murphy also said that GM ap-

pears to be doing everythingright when it comes to handlingthe ignition switch recall crisis.“We’ve observed past recall

crises,” Murphy said. “There wasthe Ford/Firestone situationabout a decade ago and there isthe more recent Toyota accelera-tion problem. It appears thatthese things go through about asix-month cycle and GM hasbeen able to do in about fourmonths what normally takes sixmonths.” These actions have pla-cated Wall Street, Murphy said,so GM won’t suffer on that side.“We’ve spoken with a lot of GM

dealers,” he said. “And they’vebeen doing a good job workingwith their customers fixing theproblem. This has helped.“In fact, it might lead to more

sales because dealers have beenable to show people new vehi-cles in their showrooms whilethe customers are waiting fortheir cars to be fixed.”Murphy said he’s never seen a

CEO of an automaker use the lan-guage that GM CEO Mary Barradid in describing how the igni-tion switch crisis evolved andgrew. It was, he said, simplyamazing that a CEO was so openin criticizing her company.The public seems to be accept-

ing of what GM has been doing.He said that total cost of the re-call problem shouldn’t exceed $5billion. In fact, that numberwould be on the high end of whatGM would expect to pay to solvethe problem.Right now, Murphy said, things

look bright for the auto industry.It’s not impossible to believe thatdemand for new cars could reachthe 17-18-million range by 2018,he said, adding that Americansare driving more than ever, theirvehicles are older than ever andthe economy is picking up.Because automakers, especial-

ly the Detroit Three, have shedexcess capacity and rationalizedproduction capacity, they will becompeting on product and notprice. That should stabilizethings for everyone.But the wild card to watch,

Murphy said, is the Ford F-150.That vehicle could be agamechanger if it does every-thing Ford says it does, he said.

the restoration job to her friendand restoration expert Joe St.Pierre.Another special vehicle that

was on display at the press pre-view was a 1940 Buick Roadmas-ter sport coupe pickup truckowned by Marvin Stephenson, aretired industrial roofer who hadcontracts with Buick in Flint.Stephenson said that the vehi-

cle is unusual because it wasbuilt for internal use at the Buickfacilities in Flint during WW II. Afriend, Gary Hopcraft, trackedthe history of the vehicle.Hopcraft said it wasn’t easy be-

cause the Roadmaster was nevermeant to go to the public, sothings like VINs and otherrecords weren’t kept on it.

Hopcraft was eventually ableto trace the history of the vehicleto the man who sold it toStephenson, who said he reallyisn’t much of a car guy, and onlybought the vehicle because afriend needed some money.Stephenson said he got the

Roadmaster in 1999 and didn’tstart restoration until 2004.“This is my first classic car,”

Stephenson said. “I’m 84 years

old and it’s also my last classiccar. I don’t think I’ll own anotherone. I don’t go to a lot of shows,so having it at the ‘EyesOn De-sign’ show is a big deal.”Renkert said while it’s fun to

have great cars like the ’64 Mer-cury and the 1940 Roadmaster,the EyesOn Design show is reallymeant to help the DIO and raiseawareness for aid and researchfor the visually impaired.

and Jere Beasley, said June 11 ina statement that GM’s court fil-ings run counter to a promisemade by GM CEO Mary Barra tofairly compensate families ofpeople killed or those injured incrashes caused by defective igni-tion switches.GM spokesman Greg Martin

New York ruled in 2009 that thenew GM is shielded from claimsstemming from cars made beforethe company emerged frombankruptcy protection. lion older small cars starting inFebruary to fix the switches,which the company says havecaused 54 crashes and at least 13deaths.

GM acknowledged that it wait-ed more than 10 years to recallthe cars. A report from an out-side attorney hired by GMblamed the delay on a dysfunc-tional corporate structure andmisconduct or poor decisions bysome employees.The attorney’s report also indi-

cates that the Meltons’ case wassettled for $5 million.The case has brought investi-

gations from Congress and theJustice Department.Also, GM has agreed to pay a

$35 million fine to the govern-ment’s road safety agency. Theautomaker has hired attorneyKenneth Feinberg to come upwith a method of compensatingvictims.

The General Motors Founda-tion is partnering with Teach ForAmerica–Detroit on a new initia-tive to advance early childhoodeducation in Southeastern Michi-gan.

Early educational experiencesgive children a foundation forsuccess, helping to ensure thatthese young learners will reachtheir full potential, said founda-tion spokesperson MariaMainville.

Funded by a $50,000 grantfrom the GM Foundation, TeachFor America’s Early ChildhoodEducation (ECE) Initiative aimsto improve the school readinessof underserved children frombirth to age five by building a ro-bust pipeline of talented teach-ers.

Funding from the GM Founda-tion will not only help to launchthe ECE Initiative, Mainville said,but also develop educator train-ing curriculum, onboard certi-fied teachers and expand the or-ganization’s impact to pre-Kclassrooms in Detroit.

“Every child deserves thechance to succeed and receivinga quality education is the funda-mental building block for abright future,” said GM Founda-tion president Vivian Pickard.

“Through our partnershipwith Teach For America and theGM Foundation’s many educa-tion initiatives in Detroit, we’reaiming to improve thosechances, from birth to collegeand beyond.”

Research shows children whohave access to early educationalexperiences enter the K-12 sys-tem best positioned to succeedacademically, Pickard said.

Thus, increasing early literacyand math skills amongpreschoolers growing up inpoverty is vital to ensuring edu-cational equity.

”Detroit’s students deserve toenter kindergarten classroomswith the knowledge and skillsthey need to be successful,” saidTiffany Williams, interim execu-tive director of Teach For Ameri-ca – Detroit.

“The support of the GM Foun-dation will allow us to build thenecessary partnerships tothoughtfully focus resources to-ward addressing this urgentneed in our city.”

Since 2010, Teach For Ameri-ca–Detroit has worked to ad-dress educational inequity by re-cruiting and training emergingleaders from across the countryto teach in local schools,Williams said.

This year, more than 300 corpsmembers are working in K-12classrooms throughout the city.

The GM Foundation places acritical emphasis on early child-hood education and has invest-ed in several Detroit initiatives,Pickard said.

Through a $27.1 million grantto United Way for SoutheasternMichigan, funds are being usedto advance early childhood edu-cation in metro Detroit and tohelp ensure that 80 percent ofchildren in the region startkindergarten ready to learn.

The grant also helps sustain65 Early Learning Centers in 10of Detroit’s most challengedneighborhoods, offering educa-tion and community support.

Further, the GM Foundationhelped to make a quality pre-school education possible for256 children in that same under-served area of Detroit through a$500,000 grant they presented tothe Education Achievement Au-thority of Michigan last Decem-ber, Mainville said.

The funding created 16 “GMFoundation Early Learning Class-rooms” in six Detroit elementaryschools to help foster a student-centered approach to teachingand learning.
