Warren "Baby" Dodds The younger brother of clarinetist Johnny Dodds. Baby was one of the very best pre-big band era drummers. His drumming is believed to be different every chorus for every tune. Mostly playing press rolls on backbeats. He’s most likely known for his “shimmy Beat”, which is when he hits the rim of his ass with his sticks. Gene Krupa A very Energetic Drummer who is known for his show business. Krupa was greatly influenced by Baby, and used a lot of his rolls in his playing. This later helped him in his big band playing. Kr anupa left a huge legacy, he was one of the first endorser of slingerland drums. Slingerland tom toms where able to be tuned from the top and bottom heads, which helped each drummer develop their voice. Gene also helped develop the modern hi-hat cymbal and helped create many more. Papa Jo Jones Papa Jo Jones is best known for his work with the Count Basie band where he worked with the “all-American Rhythm” with Freddie Green and Walter Page. He was one of the first drummers to use brushes and switching the timekeeping roe between the bass and hi-hat cymbal. Papa was known to play rather quite on the set. He would ride the hi-hat while simultaneously opening and closing the hi-hat giving it a unique feel. Buddy Rich Rich was known to be a virtuoso on the drums with great speed and accuracy. He was also a bandleader and known for his attitude. Rich would normally play tradition grip and do crowd pleasing techniques like a stick-trick which is when the drummer does a fast roll by slapping the two drumsticks together in a circular motion. Going back to his attitude, he would fire his members as much has he would get mad. Kenny Clarke Klook was known to be a major influence on the bebop role. He would play around with the time keeping from the snare to the hi-hat to the bass drums, often embellishing quarter notes on the ride with the “ding-ding-ga-ling” pattern. He went to the army, and when he returned he asked his sitter for money to buy a drum set. He started on the Mingus band after failing an audition for the benny goodman bandTony WilliamsPioneer of jazz fusion and his work with miles davis is what makes this musician unique. In miles band he explored polyrhythms and metric modulation between times and tempos.Jack DeJohnette
