1 INTRODUCTION An investigation drilling program for horticulture was carried out in the Singleton – Murray Downs area in 1990. Two investigation bores were drilled on Murray Downs in 1990 with one bore, RN15588, having good quality water and the second bore, RN15589, having poorer quality water. The 2001 groundwater investigation is a continuation of the 1990 investigation of Muray Downs but also including aboriginal land at Warrabri Aboriginal Land Trust. The Warrabri – Murray Downs area is approximately 300 km north of Alice Springs (Figure 1). The area under investigation covers the area from 427000 to 460000 east and 7650000 to 7700000 north. Part of the investigation area had previously been assessed for land capability for horticulture and the investigation drilling was confined to areas with soils suitable for horticulture. All available data was assessed before the drilling program commenced. The data included cored holes, west of the investigation area, drilled for NTGS along the Davenport Ranges road, chemical analyses from water bores in the area and geological logs, mainly from groundwater investigations looking for potable water.

2 PROJECT AIMS A groundwater investigation program was carried out in 1990 to investigate the water resources of Singleton and Murray Downs for possible horticultural water supplies. Only two investigation bores were drilled on Murray Downs during this program (F. Carosone, 1990). The 2001 investigation program is a continuation of the 1990 program. There is now more information on both water and soil resources of the area. Land Resource Assessment personnel have mapped the land capability based on landform and soils of the portion of Murray Downs with better water quality (Sugars and Whitehouse, 2000). Several bores have been drilled since 1990 and the water quality of all bores has been included in a Surfer contour plan of TDS (see section 8.2.1). In broad terms, the area of low salinity water corresponds to a topographic low with soils mostly unsuitable for horticulture. Investigation drilling was directed at areas mapped by Land Resources as having soils suitable for horticulture. The investigation drilling was looking for good supplies (>10 L/s) of water with TDS below 1000 mg/L. Three investigation sites were selected on Warrabri ALT and locations are given in Table 1 and Figure 2.

near the Murray Downs boundary. *Sites 1 & 2 not drilled due to time constraints. The water quality on Murray Downs appears to be controlled, in part, by recharge features. Areas away from recharge features tend to have a TDS of around 1500 mg/L. There are two main areas with good soils and water quality suitable for horticulture. One area is near Blue Bush bore (RN1259) and the other area is near Conglomerate Bore (RN10841). Eight investigation sites were selected on Murray Downs and locations are given in Table 2 and Figure 2.

Investigation sites were initially drilled to measure the water quality (approximately 50 metres drilling to get a water sample). If quality was poor then the hole was stopped and casing run. Holes with good quality water were continued to a maximum of 100 metres to measure the yield from the hole.

2.1 OUTPUT The result of the investigation are the following: • Map showing bores drilled. • Information on bores drilled. • Map showing suitable soils (Land Resources). • Map showing groundwater quality. • Recommendations of areas for further investigation.

3 CLIMATE The area lies under the overall influence of the northern monsoon zone with occasional heavy summer rainfall. Meteorological records are available from Barrow Creek, Murray Downs station and Ali-Curung.

3.1 RAINFALL Most rain falls during the summer season in the form of heavy thunderstorms with, generally, little follow-on rain. The mean annual rainfall for Barrow Creek (110 years of records) is 309 mm with, on average, 74% of it occurring during the November – March period. There is great variability from year to year with the maximum annual total being 986 mm in 1904 and the minimum annual total of 70 mm in 1963. The mean annual rainfall for Murray Downs Station (27 years of records) is 320 mm. The rainfall recording started in 1966 but has no data for part of 1979 and 1980 to 1984 but covers the period from 1973 to 1977 when the water levels in the monitoring bores at Ali-Curung rose approximately 8 metres (see section 9.1). The monthly rainfall for Murray Downs Station is shown in Table 4 and in Figure 3.

3.2 EVAPORATION The average annual potential evaporation for the area is approximately 3400 mm, which is more than ten times the annual precipitation.

4 GEOLOGY

The area under investigation is on the southern part of Bonney Well and the northern part of Barrow Creek 1:250,000 geology map sheets.

The investigation area contains the Davenport province of the Tennant Creek Inlier, the Palaeozoic Georgina basin and Tertiary and Quaternary deposits. The Proterozoic Hatches Creek Group outcrop to the east and south of the Murray Downs homestead and north of Ali-Curung. The Georgina basin deposits outcrop in the southern part of the study area. The Cainozoic deposits cover most of the area and mask the underlying units. A simplified stratigraphic column for the study area is given in Table 5. A geological map is presented in Figure 4.

Verhoeven and Read (1978) have summarised the stratigraphy of aquifers in the Warrabri, Singleton, Murray Downs and part of Neutral Junction. They assigned the Cambrian – Ordovician sediments to the Tomahawk beds, based on the geological interpretation of the area at the time. The geology has been re-defined by Haines et al, 1991, with part of the Tomahawk beds being re-assigned to the Arrinthrunga Formation and the Chabalowe Formation. The correlation between Verhoeven and Read and the current Barrow Creek 1:250,000 geological map (Haines et al, 1991) is shown in Table 8.

5 SOILS A broad reconnaissance land capability survey identifying areas for potential horticultural development was carried out in the Murray Downs area in 2000 (Sugars & Whitehouse, 2000). The area assessed was identified by Gilbert and Jolly (1990) as having groundwater with TDS less than 1000 mg/L. Previous mapping on Murray Downs by Grant (1989) was used by Sugars and Whitehouse and verified by spot-checking along tracks. Spot-checking involved inspecting site drainage, presence of coarse fragments or outcrop, landform types and attributes, erosion potential, soil uniformity and susceptibility to flooding. No detailed soil or vegetation recording was conducted. The land capability for particular land uses varies depending on the requirements of the crop and limitations of the land. The land deemed capable for horticulture in the Murray Downs area are those which have uniform areas of deep, well drained soils with little impedance due to abundant coarse fragments and calcrete pans. The landforms most desirable are those which have a level to slightly inclined, uniform gradient which will have similar management requirements over the entire area. The main criteria used to assess levels of capability were wetness, flooding, slope, water erosion potential, rockiness, soil depth and soil complexity. Due to the broadness of the land capability assessment the Murray Downs study area was divided into three levels of capability (Figure 5). The three levels are: Class 1 – Capable with minor to moderate limitations. Class 2 – Capable with severe limitations. Class 3 – Unsuitable. The groundwater investigation used the land capability map as a guide to areas that would be suitable for horticulture and all investigation sites were located on Class 1 levels of capability.

6 DRILLING INVESTIGATIONS

6.1 PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS There have been several groundwater investigations in the area, mainly on Warrabri Aboriginal Land Trust, looking for potable water supplies for Ali-Curung. A groundwater investigation in 1990 on Singleton – Murray Downs was looking for groundwater supplies for horticulture but only two investigation bores were drilled on Murray Downs. NTGS drilled several cored holes west of the study area to investigate the Georgina Basin sediments and the depth of the sediments. The summary of previous bores drilled is given in Appendix A and a summary of the two investigation bores drilled in 1990 is in Table 9.

6.2 2001 INVESTIGATION The drilling investigation began in July 2001 and was completed in early August 2001. Eleven bores were drilled for a total drilling depth of 924 metres. All holes, except for RN17593, were cased with either 100 mm Class 12 PVC or 50 mm Class 12 PVC. RN17593, which was used as a pump testing bore, was cased with 152 mm ID steel to case off the upper aquifer and the bore was completed open hole. A summary of the investigation bores is in Table 10. All the bores had chip samples collected every 3 metres and water samples collected at changes in water quality and quantity. Water samples were tested in the field for EC and pH. Selected water samples were sent to the laboratory for a full chemical analysis. The bores were geophysically logged with gamma, induction and conductivity/temperature if they were cased and also caliper and electric log if they were uncased. The geological logs and bore completion diagrams are in Appendix B.

6.3 GEOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION From the 2001 drilling and previous drilling the generalised geology at Blue Bush bore is: 0 – 45 metres Cainozioc 45 – 100 metres Chabalowe Formation The strata is dipping slightly to the north and at RN17593 the geology is: 0 – 36 metres Cainozioc 36 – 100 metres Arrinthrunga Formation Around RN10841 (Conglomerate bore) the Cambrian sediments appear to thin out and Proterozoic Hatches Creek Group underlie the Cainozioc sediments.

16

The bores showed an aquifer in the Tertiary sediments, yielding up to 2 L/s, and another high yielding aquifer in the underlying Cambrian sediments.

7 TEST PUMPING One bore, RN17593, was constructed as a pumping bore for a test pumping program. RN17589 and RN17594 were constructed as observation bores. RN17589 was constructed with two piezometer tubes, slotted at different intervals, with a plug between the slotted intervals. RN17594 was constructed with the slotted interval set in the Tertiary sediments. During drilling the groundwater samples showed a marked increase in salinity from 66 metres, jumping from 470 mg/L to 700 mg/L TDS, interpreted as two separate aquifers. RN17593 was constructed with the upper aquifer cased off and was pumped from the lower aquifer. RN17589 had bores screened in to two aquifers to see if the upper aquifer responded to pumping from the lower aquifer. The test pumping program was carried out from 01/09/2001 to 05/09/2001 and the program summary is in Table 11.

Table 11 Test Pumping Program Summary.

7.1 CONSTANT RATE TEST The pumped bore, RN17593, was pumped at a constant rate of 10 L/s for 1440 minutes (1 day) and recovery was measured for 1440 minutes. The plots show some problems with maintaining a constant rate of 10 L/s but these are only minor. The transmissivity and storativity values are in Table 12.

The value of 85 m2/day was selected for the transmissivity value as this is the medium value. The aquifer is semi-confined. Verhoeven and Read (1978) have summarised the transmissivity of bores drilled prior to 1978. The majority of bores in the Cainozoic aquifer are capable of yielding 2 L/s while

Page 24: Warrabri - Murray Downs 2001 B · investigation bores were drilled on Murray Downs during this program (F. Carosone, 1990). The 2001 investigation program is a continuation of the

19

some bores, such as RN10744 (Warrabri Production No. 7), can be pumped continuously at rates up to 30 L/s. Transmissivity is generally low but can be as high as 150 m2/day as in bore RN10744. The Cambrian and Proterozoic aquifers have been tested at Ali Curung, Murray Downs in the 1975 investigation and at Murray Downs station. In the Cambrian siltstone/micaceous sandstone aquifer transmissivity values were generally low, being in the order of 5 m2/day in bores RN11007 and RN11011. A value of 80 m2/day was calculated for RN11012. Transmissivity values of aquifers in the Cambrian limestone and sandstone aquifers varied widely. The transmissivity in bore RN11178, in the sandstone aquifer (Chabalowe Formation), was calculated to be 700 m2/day while bore RN11180, in the limestone aquifer (Arrinthrunga Formation), had a calculated transmissivity of 40 m2/day. The transmissivity of RN17593 is calculated to be 85 m2/day which is of the same order as RN11180.

8 CHEMISTRY Water samples were collected during drilling at increases in yield or changes in water quality. Field measurements of EC and pH were recorded. Selected samples were sent to Darwin for chemical analysis. The samples sent were the first sample collected in the Tertiary, the next significant increase in yield and the last water sample collected. RN17591 only had two samples sent as it did not yield significant amounts of water.

8.1 FIELD EC The field EC’s have been graphed along with the Laboratory EC’s. Most investigation bores generally showed increasing EC with depth. One bore, RN17592, showed decreasing EC with depth. The graphs are in Appendix C.

8.2 CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The chemical analysis of the bores is in Tables 13 and 14.

8.2.1 TDS A contouring program called Surfer has been used to produce a TDS contour map (Figure 6). The contour map shows low TDS water to the south of RN1259 (Bluebush bore), mainly following the drainage line. Bore 15588 shows low TDS water while RN14355, just over 2 km to the south, has a TDS just under 1400 mg/L. The 2001 drilling has better defined the area north and east of Ali Curung. There appears to be a body of low TDS water which does not follow the drainage line. One drainage line has bores with moderate TDS in its upper part (RN6891, TDS 1140 mg/L), lower TDS downstream (RN6890, TDS 740 mg/L) then increasing TDS further downstream going up to 1365 mg/L at RN1262. This suggests that the groundwater salinity is controlled, in part, by the underlying geology.

8.2.2 DUROV DIAGRAMS The chemical data has been plotted up as a durov diagram (Figure 7). The durov diagram with all the chemical data shows mainly typical groundwater characteristics with recharged water having high HCO3 and as the water moves through the system the water moves towards the Cl – SO4 baseline. The cations start out being low in Na + K and move towards the Na + K corner. There is one bore, RN10721, which plots slightly away from the main group in the cation field. This bore is probably drilled into either the Unimbra Sandstone or the Yeeradgi Sandstone or Tertiary sediments.

Page 26: Warrabri - Murray Downs 2001 B · investigation bores were drilled on Murray Downs during this program (F. Carosone, 1990). The 2001 investigation program is a continuation of the

21

8.2.3 HCO3/Cl RATIO The HCO3/Cl ratio is used as a measure of where recharge is occurring because recharged water is low in Cl and high in HCO3. As water travels through the groundwater system it becomes high in Cl and low in HCO3. The HCO3/Cl ratios were calculated from the first water sample collected. The Surfer contour map, Figure 8, shows recharge is occurring in a northward direction from RN14354 up to RN17593. The contour map also shows recharge occurring at Murray Downs Homestead and at RN10840 to the north west. Generally the bores at Ali Curung show low HCO3/Cl ratios except for RN1801 to the north east. The bore is near an ephemeral lake system. The area west of RN14356 has HCO3/Cl ratios less than 1 which is an indication these are old waters.

The graphs all show the same trends, as would be expected from bores close to each other in the same aquifer. The main feature of the water level graph is the 8 metre rise in water levels from the period 1974 to 1977, then the steady recession until 2000 when the water levels have levelled out and then risen again in 2001. Verhoeven and Read (1978) made an estimate of the volume of water held in storage within the Murray Downs – Warrabri environs - 1.5 x 1010 m3. This estimate was for storage within the Cainozoic aquifer as no bores were monitored in the Cambrian aquifers. Between November 1975 and June 1978 the net regional water level rise was five metres. Based on a specific yield of between 5 and 7%, recharge during this period equated to between 250 and 350 mm. The water levels for the bores drilled in 2001 have been surveyed and plotted in a Surfer water level contour plan (Figure 10). The contour map shows a shallow gradient with the groundwater moving in a north north-west direction towards the Wycliffe Well. In the Wycliffe Well area the water table is above ground level in wetter periods The water requirements of the ecosystem that is maintained in this area requires investigation.

10 CONCLUSIONS The investigation drilling has located several areas that may warrant further investigation. One area is near RN1259 (Blue Bush bore) where good quality water has been located in a sandstone aquifer of the Chabalowe Formation. Previous work has calculated transmissivity values of 700 m2/day for this aquifer. The other area is north west of RN10841 (Conglomerate bore) were good quality water was located in a conglomerate (Kurinelli Sandstone?). The investigation bore, RN17592, showed decreasing salinity with depth. In the area near RN1259 there are two interconnected aquifers. In the area around RN17593 there are three interconnected aquifers. The aquifers around RN1259 are the Tertiary sediments, maximum yield 2 L/s, and the underlying Chabalowe Formation. The aquifers at RN17593 are the Tertiary sediments, the upper Arrinthrunga formation and the lower Arrinthrunga Formation. The TDS and HCO3/Cl ratio contour map both support the theory that recharge is the main process resulting in improved water quality around and to the south of RN1259. The water level contour plan shows the water is moving in a north north-west direction from RN1259 towards the Wycliffe Well area.

11 RECOMMENDATIONS A conceptual hydrogeological model should be developed for the Murray Downs – Singleton - Ali Curung - Wycliffe Well region. Consideration should also be given to the development of a regional numerical groundwater model similar to that recently developed for the Ti Tree Basin. A regional water level and water quality monitoring program is required. Currently water level and water quality monitoring data only exists in the vicinity of Ali Curung.
