-Mexico rebelled against their Mother Country Spain and gained independence in 1821 and started a “republic.”

-Ruled by one man President and General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna

-Allows Americans to settle in Texas to increase population

-Tensions rise between Texans and Mexicans and in 1829 Texas declares it’s independence from Mexico

Battle of the AlamoFebruary 23, 1836

183 Texan volunteers held off a Mexican Army of 1,800 men for 13 days before being overrun. All male volunteers were killed the women and children spared to tell the Americans that they are to stay out of Texas.

-Texas was now independent and was named the Republic of Texas or the “Lone Star Republic.” -Denied annexation to the US in 1836 because Texas wanted to remain a slave state and US did not want another slave state. Texas annexed 1845.

-Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna’s army of 1,800 men in only 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto, April 21, 1836

-William Becknell led a wagon train to Santa Fe filled with merchandise in 1821. -
