• The Cell membrane is a boundary between the cell and its environment.

• It allows materials such as water, nutrients and waste products to enter and leave.

• Often called a selectively or semi permeable because it only allows certain materials in and out

• The cell membrane is mostly made of a lipid bilayer- Lipids are typically fats, oils and waxes - Bi = two

• The “heads” are polar and will interact with water• The “tails” do not interact with water and face

each other• Proteins and Carbohydrates are also embedded

in the membrane.

• Definition: The movement of molecules, energy and waste in or out of the cell.

• The ONLY way to get in or out is through the CELL MEMBRANE.

• The Cell membrane is SEMI-PERMEABLE, meaning that some things are allowed through and others aren’t to maintain homeostasis

• There are TWO types of transport:

• Active transport

• Passive transport

• Definition: The movement of substances across a biological membrane without spending chemical energy (ATP).
