“The alumni are indelible stakeholders of a management institute; they were our beloved students once and are now brand ambassadors of the institute in the world outside” - A K Sen. Gupta

Dear Friends,

Greetings from the alma mater.

On 5th November, 2008, a new chapter was written in the pages of American history and also of the World. For the rst time America would have an African American, Senator Barack Obama as President elect.

The dawn of an era brought with it the winds of ‘Change’. Obama’s victory is a message to the whole world that ‘change’ is a good thing and that it is imperative for holistic growth. This marks the beginning of new events – inclusivity in the true sense of the term.

In his own words, "I'm asking you to believe. Not just my ability to bring about real change in Washington...I'm asking you to believe in yours.” Obama leads us to a simple yet signicant message – we must gear up and believe in our inherent ability to change in order to excel in whatever we do.

We at SIESCOMS have always strived for excellence in everything that we do and we believe that the alumni have a vital role to play in this journey towards excellence. The alumni are indelible stakeholders of a management institute; they were our beloved students once and are now brand ambassadors of the institute in the world outside.

“La Melange” is the fruit of our objective to keep the alumni informed and connected with their Alma mater. We hope it serves the desired objective of bringing all of us closer together.

From The Editor’s Desk “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step “– the step that each batch of alumni took when they stepped out of the gates of SIESCOMS to nd their destiny.

Some have travelled far across the seven seas; some have circumnavigated the world and come right back to home shores. Some have always been in touch while some have been fond but distant memories.

As the world shrinks in terms of distance, we at SIESCOMS felt the need to reconnect with all old members of the family through this wonderful medium. Thus, the birth of “La Mélange” the e- version, to keep up with the changing times. Our Alumni have always been a source of strength and encouragement and today we look forward to making them a more regular part of our lives again.

The concept was born from the thought that since everybody tries to connect with their classmates/batch mates through the various networking sites, then why not have them connect via the alma mater? “La Mélange” is hopefully going to become that connector between alumni and alumni as well as alumni and SIESCOMS. The alumni are the essence of our identity. We hope that each one of you will now take that single “step” to stay connected. To misquote Maria from the “Sound of Music”….”Besides which you see, we have condence in you!!!”

THE JOURNEY SO FAR

Lots of love,Anmol Rao & Vishit Hegde On behalf of Alumni Committee 2007-2008

This is not just a database. This is our family tree. Please be careful with it.

We still remember the day our senior Raheel Merchant (now with TATA Chemicals) met us last year with a pen drive in his hand and said “This is not just a database. This is our family tree. Please be careful with it.” A group of the fresh inductees looked at each other and saved the les on a laptop naming the folder “ALUMNI DB”. This was possibly the rst time we had a sense of belonging for something as inanimate as a windows folder. Several months passed rening the database; all this to achieve our goal – A Successful LA MELANGE 2008! We would lie if we say things were easy! It was a herculean task, but somehow we developed a strong revised database of 800 alumni. A milestone for the Alumni Committee this year was undoubtedly LA MELANGE in January 2008. Against all odds, the determination of our mentor Prof. Nitin Vazirani and a strong team, SIESCOMS witnessed around 450 alumni celebrating their reunion, some who came back almost after 10 years. We still remember that evening! The result of months of phone calls, emails & requests for leads was taking shape right in front of our eyes! Talking of milestones, we still remember Prof. Nitin Vazirani addressing us and conceptualising a system which could email all the alumni in the DB with a click of a button. We formed a site, www.siescomites.com which now has almost all the alumni whom we were in touch with. Today, as there are few months for us to be listed in the alumni database, we are happy to work along with an equally passionate set of new inductees of the Alumni Committee. They’ve started campaigns like this newsletter, CHAI WITH ALUMNI and most importantly started conceptualising LA MELANGE 2009 which would surely be of a magnitude that SIESCOMS hasn’t witnessed yet. As we are in process of this handover, we would like to thank endlessly for their support, our dear alumni, our sta members, our faculty members & deans and last but not the least, our director who continuously believed in our vision.

An Interview with Mr. Tarak Ghosh

What was your experience with respect to the inter college competitions at SIESCOMS?The experience was great. Siraj Irani and I won the intercollegiate elocution competition & we participated in dierent festivals. It was a dierent kind of high, people working together, working late. College life has a dierent charm, which will never comeback you can just cherish those memories.

What is the craziest thing that you did in college? We were very notorious, but we did everything within the rules of acceptability, like bunking lectures, laughing a lot during the lectures, etc. We were into fun and frolic at most times .We worked on our rst management festival in the college which was called Virtualities. One ne day, while preparing for the event, 5-6 of us were sitting on the stair case outside our class. It was around 9.30 p.m and we were trying to come up with some innovative staging ideas. At that time, Professor Neelkan-than came around driving his Maruti - 800 and suddenly an idea dawned on us. We told him about it & he really liked it. As a celebration of that idea we opened the doors of his car, switched on the music player and started dancing along with him on a peppy Hindi number!

Mr. Tarak Ghosh is one of the oldest members of the SIESCOMS family belonging to the inaugural batch of MMS (1995-97). He is currently the CMO of ICICI First Source.

“Prof. Neelkanthan joined us in a peppy Hindi number!”

What would you say about your learning at SIESCOMS?All the Professors were very good. Initially, it took us some time to realize that a B- School has a dierent environment and it is not an extension of our graduation. When I look back I have happy memories and I sincerely acknowledge the contribution of the college in making me what I am today.

What were some of your cherishable memories at SIESCOMS?When we did our rst college festival, I remember doing a bit of compeering, which was great fun. I remember being a part of the team that won a trophy at the IMCR fair. Also getting a pre placement oer is one of the many cherishable memories associated with SIESCOMS!

An Interview with Mr. Tarak GhoshWhat are the key challenges that you face in your current organization? We face a lot of challenges, in terms of dealing with people, achievement of objectives etc. Each job is very unique and hence the challenges faced keep on changing. How-ever I try to ensure that people who work as a part of my team learn from my leadership, especially in terms of developing their own skills. I also try to ensure that I lead from the front without blaming anyone else for my team’s failure.

What is your opinion about the nancial turmoil in the US?What’s happening in India is very dierent from what’s happening in the US. In America, people were very keen on investment banking. A lot of regulations that are manda-tory in many industries, especially in developing nations, was missing .This turmoil has actually worked as an eye-opener for all countries. In India, banks are not facing many problems as liquidity is not a crisis yet. The economy is going through a cyclic curve, but every time it goes down some phase of correction happens which in a way is good for the economy .Agreed, a lot of money has been lost but I am sure that the stock market will soon be back on track. People just have to be patient.

What message would you like to give to the SIESCOMSITES?Being a product of SIESCOMS I’d want the college to be the topmost B-School in the country. I wish the students all the very best. Whenever I hear about a fellow alumni, who is doing very well in his/her career, I feel very proud. I want the institute to emulate other good B-Schools as well, and I don’t think there is any reason why we cannot be the best B- School in the country. If I can be of any help to the institute, I will be more than happy to do so.

Entrepreneurship Club

COMMITTEES INTRODUCTION

Page `8

AmelangL e

December2008 Volume 1 Issue 1

The Entrepreneurship Club is a platform for honing entrepreneurial abilities in SIESCOMITES. The club, in association with the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN), aims at designing a course structure which would help the students with ideas and infuse in them the passion to become an entrepreneur. Not only this, but the course would also aim at helping students in drafting a business proposal, provide guidance to approach venture capitalists and participate in various business plan competitions. NEN’s wide network of academic institutions across India of the likes of SP Jain Institute of Management Studies, BITS, Pilani, IIT Mumbai, etc would thus aide SIESCOMS budding entrepreneurs to perform research, develop and deliver skill building programs.

Finance Club – ArthManthan

ArthManthan means ‘money churning’ – this is a ‘nance gurukul’ where ideas, concepts and theories pertaining to the intriguing world of nance, are discussed. It is this platform where enthusiastic student participation is invoked on topics like the Share Bazaar, the Wall Street developments and its global impact and the government interventions in the banking sector reforms are discussed and shared. It aims at leveraging the knowledge of students who are inclined towards a career in nance but who also hail from diverse backgrounds. Also, it greatly facilitates exchange of information and better understand-ing of the fundamental interconnections between nance and the other elds of management, like marketing and human relations. ArthManthan thus truly keeps churning knowledge!

The committees are made to get all SIESCOMITES with shared interests on a common platform. The idea is to share information and co-ordinate actions in order to achieve various goals. The committee heads set the tone for various initiatives that are undertaken by their respective committees.

December 2008 Volume 1 Issue 1

‘Brand Garage’, like the name suggests is a forum which facilitates a discussion of ideas in brand innovation. It is a platform where the engines of the past, current and emerging marketing trends are studied, unlocked and assembled. Some of the speakers who were invited for this weekly session include alumnus like Mr. Ankur Suali, Channel V (Sales) and Mr. Sabrish R, Asian Paints (Sales) who were kind enough to share their experiences with us.

Teams from KJ Somaiya, NMIMS, Sydenham etc participated in the event.

The Sahayog Committee has been pretty busy since the word go. They’ve already organized a blood donation camp held in association with D. Y. Patil Hospital; a musical skit addressing social issues of child labour, dowry, environmental conservation and terrorism; an in-house dona-tion drive for the ‘Bihar Relief Funds’ and a street play competition for the students with the theme revolving around spreading social awareness.

Branding Mementos

The Student Mentoring Program is a new initiative taken by the college for the HR students to bridge the gap between what is imparted in the classroom and its practical applications. The program will give the students a better insight and understanding of the functional aspects of the corporate world thus enriching their knowledge pool. The process involves continuous interaction between mentors and mentees via phone calls, e-mails and monthly one-on-one meetings.

An Interview with Mr. Rajesh ManikMr.Rajesh Manik is a seasoned HR professional with about 14 years of HR experience in India and Asia Pacic. He is a SIESCOMS graduate who was a part of the PG (1997-99) batch and currently Heads Human Resources, IL&FS.

What was your experience with respect to the inter collegiate events at SIESCOMS?SIESCOMS started hosting the events Virtualities in the year 1998.Various colleges participated in the event, also certain top management level industry leaders came and mentored the students during the event. During Virtualities, upcoming ad-man Sonal Dabral hosted one of the quiz shows. That event is still very close to my heart.

How has management education helped you in the corporate world? When I started my career, my work involved a lot of decision making with regard to people and processes. All the learning I garnered at SIESCOMS could therefore be put into practical use in my rst job .Therefore I was able to immediately couple the learning with the opportunity that I had.

What was your rst job and how was the experience? My rst job was at A&Z Grindlays Bank. The most important learning took place while dealing with people with dierent ideas, mindsets and competencies. Handling people’s ego’s is quite challenging and vital to ensure smooth work ow, however a down to earth approach helps in such situations.

What would you say about your learning at SIESCOMS? It was a very enriching experience. We had some terric faculty members; Neelkanthan Sir was the Director of the institute. He had the best mixture of industrial experience and academic knowledge, thus giving us practical insight into all the management teachings that students were being imparted. So in terms of Infrastructure, Director, Faculty, Students- we had the best people around us and that brought out the best in the students.

What was your most cherished moment at SIESCOMS?The presence of Mr. P. Chidambaram and Mr. Narayan Murthy at the convocation ceremony was special. It speaks volumes about the brand value that SIESCOMS generates.

An Interview with Mr. Rajesh ManikWhat are the challenges that an HR professional has to face?As the Head of HR, the biggest challenge is to deploy all your management expertise into day-to-day situations such as decision making, hiring, talent management, talent engagement, talent development, etc in order to ensure that HR contributes positively to the success of the organization.

What is your opinion about work life balance?Indians are quite exible and hence are never averse to stretching work hours. However every manager has to be disciplined and ensure that work life balance is maintained.

What do you think about the turmoil in the nancial sector? The nancial sector in the U.S has been adversely aected by the recent happenings; however the Indian nancial system is reasonably stable. The slowdown in India is because of the sluggishness of the stock market. The turmoil in the U.S will aect IT, ITES and real estate. Otherwise Indian investment banks are doing fairly well.

What is your Mantra in life?External factors give one momentary motivation, but the biggest motivation is excelling at your work. So the mantra is when you are working in the corporate world, do exceptionally well.

December 2008 Volume 1 Issue 1

A rst time initiative of the students of the SIESCOMS alumni committee, this program is a tool to increase the participation of the alumni and encourage more interaction between the alumni and the college. The class correspondent program includes students of dierent batches of SIESCOMS who act as the class correspon-dents for a particular batch and will be the point of contact for the students of that batch. They would also serve as the point of contact for the alumni committee and would be instrumental in holding various events and stay connected. This initiative comes as a pleasant surprise to the alumni who want to be in touch with the various happenings in the college and would love to be a part of the SIESCOMS family!

We thank you for your concern and interest. We request the alumni to forward their updated proles and contact details to their respective class coordinators. Warm RegardsCountless unsent letters of love

Countless unspoken desires of love, of joySome naive, some happy, some persistent, some passionate

Some even a little sad...Perhaps it is almost justied to say the letters are of sentimental values

But behind each word lies the weight of one true heart But if that family member living far away

Feels the same way as I doWould that not too, be a beautiful thing?

This probed me to kick start a very vibrant and continuous alumnus interactive programme at once without any further delay and say WELCOME AGAIN. For this, I would like to make a special mention & thank our student, Harsh - the spark that ignited the re, Harpreet,Dipti,Renisha,Priyanka and Upasana who crystallized the idea for its smooth functioning and the student editors Gaytri,Prashant and Thommen who ne tuned the matter to renew old ties and relations with our old family mem-bers.

However for this forum to commence, for members of SIESCOMS family who are further aeld, we invite you to join us in our endeavour and stay connected. The point of contact or student co-ordinators from each batch are the ones who have been in constant touch with us, though we desire more students to partner with us at facilitating quality events & sharing your odyssey in reaching career milestones with us. We are updating the database of the student co-ordinators, so kindly ensure that this reaches each and every alumni of your respective batch & also forward us the email id’s of your batch mates.

Last year, we managed to clutch in many ex-students who had completely lost in touch with us but are now involved in a lot of activities & are inspiring our students everyday with their stories and success in their particular eld. You serve our BEST ambassadors to the world and are critical to the continued success of this college. To start o with, this initiative has been taken up with the objective of getting all you illustrious alumni of SIESCOMS for Chai with Alumni, an informal get together with the current batch of rst year students organised by Anirudh,Rohit,Ashwin,Mitali,Mohsin Sneha,Sriram,Abhishek,Vandana and Anushri .

For Details you could contact Anirudh (9987008558) or Rohit(9819482100).A forum where you can share your knowledge and give them basic tips as to how they could furnish their fundaas & prepare for summer internships. Those interested in being instrumental for making this agenda a success, please send us your names and contact details. It would be a pleasure to have you back on the campus, indeed on the other side this time!

It’s time to give back to your Alma matar, your institute. We are just mediators, we have initiated & set a platform for you, we await a positive response from our alumni. This initiative is the rst step which I and my team have taken & calls for immense support & encouragement from your end. Needless to say the successful camaraderie with the completion of one batch makes it time to start with the next one!!! So come join us & pass on the legacy to the coming batches. You are our hope and our friend in every occasion of joy. Hoping to meet you just like the old times for now and for ever.
