Warm greetings from Surgical Society of Bangalore.It gives us immense pleasure in welcoming you all to Bengaluru, the silicon valley of India with its pleasant climate. We are proud to host the 44th Prof B. Hanumaiah Memorial National Continuing Surgical Education Program from 18th to 23rd November 2018. It will begin with workshop on 18th to enhance the surgical skills of budding surgeons. Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world for the better. The tremendous popularity of the CSEP is reflected by the fact that it's being conducted successfully for 44 years on a trot. For over the last four decades, this teaching program is keenly sought after by numerous postgraduates from all over India, with around 480 students attending annually from more than 120 medical colleges. The faculty who train you during this CSEP are experts in their fields and have decades of experience in teaching surgery postgraduates. Faculty come from various academic institutes of Karnataka and neighbouring states, so that you get rich blend of exposure to enhance your knowledge. This CSEP aims to train you in clinical case assessment for a better patient care and also to prepare you for the postgraduate examination. The able experts from the city of Bengaluru contribute immensely towards the success of this program.

The topics for the guest lectures are based on the questions asked in the previous year surgery examinations. Please participate actively in the clinical discussions and feel comfortable to raise questions and clarify your doubts. Our experienced and renowned anchors Dr T H Anjanappa, Dr C S Rajan, Dr M R Sreevathsa, Dr H V Shivaram and Dr Rajashekara Reddy H V will always be around to clear your doubts.We are streaming liveoperative session from 7am to 9am and giving you a educational manual as a referenceGuide for your exams written by experts.

The Karnataka state level surgery quiz anchored by Dr C S Rajan, will be held on Wednesday 21st November 2018. All current surgical postgraduate students (MS/ DNB) who are registered for CSEP, are eligible to participate in the quiz. The winning team (pair) will be sponsored by KSC-ASI to represent Karnataka at the Grand National Surgical Quiz during ASICON 2018 at Chennai in December.

PROF. B. HANUMAIAH

Dr. Hanumaiah was born on 1/10/1920 at Nelamangala taluk. He completed his secondary education in Magadi town following which he was encouraged by the government to carry on with his studies in medicine. He secured 1st rank in LMP conducted by the Medical School of Mysore state in 1941.

In 1946 he received Freemason Golden jubilee prize from His Highness Sri Jayachamarajendre Wodeyer the Maharaja of Mysore for having secured first rank in MBBS. He was deputed by the govenment to United Kingdom for higher studies in Surgery in 1953. He cleared FRCS from Edinburgh in first attempt in 1955. On his return he was appointed as resident medical officer at Victoria Hospital and thus began his long and illustrious career. He served as Associate Professor of Surgery at Bangalore Medical College in 1958 and was later moved to Mysore as Professor of Surgery. In 1966 he returned to Bangalore as Professor of Surgery and later on became the director of postgraduate studies in 1971. He became the dean and principal of Postgraduate Institute of Bowring Lady Curzon Hospital and also ex officio Superintendent of the hospital.

He was the member of Senate, Academic Council, and Chairman, Board of Examination, University of Bangalore. He was the Head of the department of Surgery of Bangalore Medical College till his superannuation in 1987. He was the recipient of Rajyothsava award by the Govt of Karnataka and Doctors Day award by the Indian Medical Association, Bangalore.

He attained heavenly adobe on 7.3.1995.

A pioneer in Laparoscopic & Thoracoscopic surgery in early 90s and trained many surgeons under a WHO program.

Performed Karnataka's first Thoracoscopic, LAVH(Gynec) & Bariatric surgeries.

Setup Karnataka state's first Department of Endocrine Surgery as Professor of Endocrine Surgery at M. S. Ramaiah Medical

College, Bangalore.

Designed various new devices for Laparoscopic and open surgery.

Recipient of numerous awards & medals.

His clinic & home in Bangalore are powered by solar energy. His home water supply is by rainwater harvesting, waste is

recycled and he has a roof top green house. He is tech savvy, has designed various innovative devices & assembles his own desktop

computer.

Was born in Mangalore when it was a part of Madras Presidency before Karnataka was formed, both parents were engineers,

wife Dr Sudhamayee graduated at GMC (VIMS) Ballari, and postgraduate in MD Dermatology at BMC Bengaluru.

Dr. Muniswamy Authikeshavalu was born on 16th

August 1906 at Bangalore. After completing a course in

LMP he went on to do MBBS from Madras University

where he was the best outgoing student. He was

deputed to Canada where he obtained his fellowship

(FRCS). He worked in Mayo clinic USA with a special

interest in intestinal abstruction. after returning to

India he joined Victoria Hospital in 1956. Later he

became the principal and Dean of Bangalore Medical

College. He is known for his Marathon Teaching

sessions. He pioneered work on “Peptic Ulcer

Treatment - Truncal Vagotomy and Gastro

Jejunostomy”. His original research work is still

preserved at Mayo Clinic. He retired in 1967 from

Government service and joined CSI hospital, but

continued to teach students from St. Johns Medical

College. He was married to Achamma and has two

sons and one daughter.

He succumbed to cancer of stomach in 1973.

As a surgeon, he made St Philomena's Hospital, a missionary charitable Hospital, as his base and progressed continuously with his hard work to attain the current status. He was instrumental in starting DNB Surgery PG course at St Philomena's Hospital and trained many DNB students and young surgeons. Previously he was consultant at Lakeside Hospital, Mallya Hospital and Columbia Asia Hospitals. His free services for many years at Sri Sathya Sai Hospital, Whitefield, is a testimony to his social commitment. Dr H V Shivaram progressively trained himself to be in the top of the profession by frequently visiting various centers of excellence in India and abroad. Thus he is well known for his expertise in laparoscopy,GI, Pancraetic and Bariatric surgeries. He constantly keeps himself updated and embraces the technological advances for the benefit of the patients. He is academically active; has publications in many reputed journals, written book chapters and has conducted many live workshops, CMEs and conferences. He is a member and office bearer of many local & national organizations. Whenever he is in the helm of affairs, including that of our surgical society & state chapter, he works relentlessly to improve the functioning and finances of the organization. Many awards and accolades have come to him naturally. Apart from the Bangalore University Gold Medal, Sainya Sewa Medal, he was awarded Mahadevan Award, Rotary International Gold Medal and Doctor of the year 2013 awards and many organizations have honored him periodically. He is a Fellow of American College of Surgeons (FACS) and Fellow of Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons (FRCS) Glasgow. He is DNB and MRCS examiner. Dr H V Shivaram is known as the gentleman surgeon and “Ajatha Shathru”. His students & juniors adore him, professionals & co-workers admire him; patients & public trust him and his family and friends want his company always. Dr H V Shivaram, strongly believes in ethical practice with empathy, continuous professional development and team work to deliver the best of surgical care to the needy patients. The president and the executive committee of Surgical Society of Bangalore & Association of Surgeons of India Bangalore City Chapter, wish him all the happiness and success and is extremely happy to honour Dr H V Shivaram on this day of 23rd November 2018 for delivering the prestigious Prof. Adikeshavulu Memorial Oration.

He was born (1959) to a family of Sanskrit scholars and brought up in a village called Honngundi near the holy town Sringeri. He did his graduation from Mysore Medical College (1982) and completed his post-graduation from Bangalore Medical College (1991) with first class and Bangalore University Gold Medal. After MBBS he served in Army Medical Corps as Captain for 5 years and was awarded Saniya Sewa Medal for his dedicated service.

Dr H V Shivaram is currently the Head of the Department of Surgery & Allied Specialties and Chief of GI & Bariatric Surgery at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Dr. NITHYANANDA SHETTY

Dr.Nithyananda Shetty was a dynamic young surgeon and an

active member of the Surgical Society of Bangalore and a

reputed Cardiothoracic Surgeon. thBorn on 8 April 1952, Nithya was the fourth son of a family of

agriculturalists. He completed his MBBS and MS Degrees from

J J M Medical College, Davangere. He joined the department of

cardiothoracic surgery at St Johns Medical College under Dr.

Jerry Mascarenhas before moving to CMC Vellore to pursue

higher Surgical training in Cardiothoracic Surgery and obtained MCh from CMC

Vellore in 1985. He returned to Bangalore and joined St John's Medical College as

Asst Professor in Cardiothoracic surgery and later on became the Professor and Head

of the department in 1989. He resigned from the college in 1994 and joined MS

Ramaiah Medical College as Head of the department, a post that he held till he

breathed his last in 2004.

He was an excellent surgeon, very popular teacher and above all an extremely good

human being. He made sure his presence was felt in the academic meetings he

attended and did not hesitate to put forth his views while participating in a debate.

Apart from the Surgical Society he was an active member of Association of

Cardiothoracic Surgeons of India and Cardiological Society of India. He was

recognized as a giant in the field of thoracic surgery and was well known for his work

in peripheral vascular surgery. He was selected as the Starr Ahmed Fellow and

delivered a masterly Godrej Karal oration in 2003. He performed innumerable

number of operations both complex and complicated with very good results. His

Patients loved him for his simplicity and straight forwardness. He was quite popular

amongst his friends and colleagues and was a devoted family man.

His untimely death in 2004 left scores of individuals among the family and friends in

a state of shock and grief. He was at the peak of his professional career and enjoying

life with his family and friends when disaster took him away. His memory will

always remain in our heart and mind. We will never forget his contribution to the

profession and to the society.

Prof. Srikrishna has an experience of more than 33 years in the field of Cardiac, Thoracic & Vascular Surgery . He is an Alumnus of St. John's Medical College, Bangalore and had his General Surgery training in the Command Hospital, Air Force, Bangalore and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the prestigious KEM Hospital in Mumbai where he topped the University examination in Cardiothoracic surgery. He came back and established the Open Heart Surgical programme in the Cardiothoracic department in his Alma Mater, St. John's Medical College Hospital, in Bangalore in 1987 along with Late Dr Nityanand Shetty. He had further advanced training in Cardiac, Thoracic and Transplant Surgery at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK for 2 years(1991-92). He came back and established a full fledged Coronary Artery Surgical programme in his Alma Mater, St. John's Medical College Hospital, and continued there as Professor and Head of the department till 2006. He later moved to Narayana Hrudayalaya in the beginning of 2007 to establish a “State of the Art” wing of Thoracic Surgery to complement the already well known Division of Cardiac Surgery at Narayana Hrudayalaya.

He pioneered Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery in the state of Karnataka in 1995 and is also proficient in complex thoracic procedures including complicated lung resctions, Tracheal reconstructions and Chest wall reconstructions. He has the largest experience of Tracheal surgery in Karnataka. Dr Srikrishna also has an active interest in vascular surgery such as aneurysms of aorta (thoracic, thoracoabdominal and AAA), Carotid surgery and upper limb revascularizations. At Narayana Hrudayalaya he is actively involved in advanced VATS programme for major lung resections, Lung volume reduction Surgery and also started the Lung transplant programme, and Robotic Thoracic Surgery.

Dr Srikrishna has been a keen teacher and has trained numerous Cardiothoracic Surgeons and also has been an examiner for the DNB (Cardiothoracic) and MCh (Cardiothoracic) examinations in various Universities in India. Presently he is the Director of the largest training programme for DNB Cardiothoracic Surgery with 42 trainees at the Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences.

Prof Srikrishna has presented many papers in National and International conferences and has more than 20 publications in indexed medical journals.

Prof. Ranjal Hari Narayan Shenoi

Born on 13th July; 1926 in Mercera, Coorg toparents Sri. Ranjada Hari Shenoi and Mother Smt Girija.Dr. Shenoi had his medical education, both Under-graduate and Post-graduate, at Madras Medical College (1956). He joined Madras MedicalService and was posted to Mangalore.Later he was selected as Associate Professor of Surgery and came to Hubli (1959).He served as Principal and Professor of Surgery at Bellary Medical College (1975- 80) and Bangalore Medical College (1981) from where he retired.

Prof. Shenoi was honoured with Dr. B.C.Roy Award and KarnatakaRajyothsava Award.

Prof. Shenoi's preceptorship was truely "Geeta in Action". Every student is made to focus intensely on his chosen subject, love that subject, appreciate deprivations, make sacrifices and finally enjoy the fruits of labour. Every student,both undergraduate and post-graduate readilyfall in love with him.

Prof. Shenoi was a rare gem of a Surgeon who could instruct, inspire and illuminate a large number of Students.

Prof.Shenoi passed awayon 3rd March 2006.

What can we,his ardent students do to commemorate the ideals of this true SurgicalSage? Best way to pay tribute to thisgreat soul isto pass on his legacy of surgical teachings to youngsurgical students. Hence,we have started this endowment and we wish to conduct workshops, continued Medical Education Programmes,Visiting Professorshipsetc.

That will be the bestGurudakshina to our revered teacher Prof. R.H.N.Shenoi.

(Prot RHN Shenoi to be brief) belongs to the illustrious Ranjal Family; known for sculpting monolithic Bahubali and Lord Buddha. On the contrary, Prof. Shenoi infused skills into the dormant hands of many young surgeons and made them brilliant craftsman. Prof. Shenoi was a multifaceted personality - like a well cut diamond adding brilliance and luster on eachfacetof that precious stone.
