PERIOD OF JUNE – AUGUST, 2014 BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY THROUGH EDUCATION

As tradition dictates, Yayasan Kemanusiaan Ibu Pertiwi (YKIP) held their annual KIDS Gathering Party during the school holiday season in June. This year, the Party involved more than 160 people, consisting of the children sponsored by KIDS, the programs’ alumni, their families, as well as supporters and guests specially invited to participate in the gathering. Some of the KIDS families who are now residing in Java came back to Bali to take part in the Party.

This year’s full-day fun took place at the Bali Outbound and Farmstay, in Tabanan, Bali. Despite the cloudy day and slight shower, the children’s enthusiasm was not curbed and they participated whole-heartedly in every activity coming their way.

The day began with a warm breakfast and also a morning assembly, where several announcements were made by Mitrais’ President Director Wiwie Harris. Mitrais is one of YKIP’s major benefactors especially for the KIDS program. After thanking everyone for coming, Wiwie announced, “This will be the last party held annually. The upcoming KIDS Gathering Parties will be held every two years, so we can allocate the funds to improve the quality of education received by the KIDS’ children.”

YKIP has organized the annual gathering parties in order to allow the surviving families of the Bali Bombings to meet and share their success and life stories following the 2004 tragedy. Eleven years have passed since; some of the sponsored children have completed their studies and at the moment we are still supporting 42 Elementary to University aged children. Despite the fact that the cost to organize the gathering party continues to increase year after year, YKIP still holds it without fail. However, now it has reached the point where YKIP has to reconsider the KIDS program’s budget and prioritize to make sure that the program continues to achieve its goal in providing sustainable education assistance and bringing more practical benefits to the children supported by KIDS.

Like previous years, KIDS children celebrated their birthday with one big birthday cake and received a pack of school supplies. YKIP took the opportunity to give out prizes to the outstanding KIDS students who attained academic and non-academic achievements, as an appreciation for their hard work.

Ceremonial proceedings aside, there were a series of outdoor games which involved all children and their families. No one shied

from the competition, giving it their all to be the champion of the

games and win attractive prizes. In

addition to the rigorous yet fun

games, there were also quizzes and

little tasks played indoors.

Children and parents alike

actively took part, eager to be the one chosen

to answer a question or go up to the stage to complete the challenges set by the MCs.

“It always makes me happy to see everyone so enthusiastic, and they all mingled without much prompting, which is not strange seeing that we already know one another,” said Dian Assiddika, the Operation Director of YKIP. “They were also accepting of our esteemed guests, Mark Keatinge, one of our staunch supporters, and Majell Hind, the new Australian Consul General. Both came to see what we were doing, and brought with them the possibility of supporting our program.” Mark Keatinge and Majell Hind expressed their delight at the event and were looking forward to YKIP’s future endeavors.

To make the day even more memorable, YKIP had arranged for the KIDS children to get a chance at trying out one of two popular attractions in the Bali Outbound and Farmstay facilities: the flying fox or the horse ride. Needless to say, the volunteers responsible for helping the children got their rides mobbed in an instant.

The gathering party was a fabulous success this year. Our sincerest thanks to all who were able to make it to our Gathering Party and to our sponsors who have helped us make this event a successful one.

The First Quarter Distribution 2014/2015 KEMBALI Scholarship Program

The KEMBALI 1st

quarter distribution event has been successfully conducted by the YKIP team in 13 areas of the KEMBALI Program from 4

th to 23

rd August 2014. We

distributed cash allowances and school supplies to 513 KEMBALI students. On this occasion, we took photos of each KEMBALI student along with their parent(s), collected the students’ latest academic reports and provided the elementary students with Anthelmintic syrup. It’s the same routine we always do in the beginning of the academic year, but we never ever get bored because we have so much fun meeting and sharing togetherness with the children.

On our distribution day in Karangasem, we had a surprise visit from the Head of Karangasem District, Bapak I Wayan Geredeg. His presence honored everyone who was involved that day, especially the KEMBALI students and their parents, because their leader was giving lots of attention to the children involved in YKIP’s educational program. His speech was filled with encouraging messages telling the KEMBALI students to never stop pursuing their dreams and to not easily give them up. He also expressly encouraged the parents of KEMBALI students to manage their family income wisely and avoid unnecessary spending when they receive extra income.

YKIP team was able to finish the distribution program on schedule. Thank you to all YKIP supporters, especially our donors, local partners and valued volunteers, who have given their generous donations, in many supportive forms.

UPCOMING EVENT

The KEMBALI 2nd Quarter Distribution is scheduled to commence the 2nd week of October 2014.

Who Visited…?

Bali Family Law Conference

Every year Susan and Peter, along with their friends from the Bali Family Law Conference, come to Bali to hold a conference called “Law on the Lounge”. This year the conference took place on 31

st May – 1

st June 2014 at Conrad Bali, Nusa Dua.

The Bali Family Law Conference has been sponsoring students for 6 years via YKIP. In 2013, in memory of their dear friend and ardent supporter of their conference, Her Honour Justice Carolyn Martin, the Bali Family Law Conference sponsors ten girls to complete their education to the end of Year 12. Her Honour Justice Carolyn Martin was a strong supporter of girls' education and her friends believe she would have been especially pleased to know what they are doing in her name.

Four out of ten girls graduated from high school last May and they are Muliati, Elisza, Dewi and Febriyanti. The first three had the opportunity to meet their sponsors on the last day of the conference. The girls came to give their speeches and to say thank you in person to the delegates of the Law on the Lounge 2014.

Susan shared her thought to us about her experience meeting the girls and she wrote,

“She (Her Honour Justice Carolyn Martin) would have been especially pleased to meet Muliati, Eliza and Dewi, who came to our conference and spoke in June this year. For these three girls, who had just completed Year 12, to speak to a large room full of judges and lawyers from another country is an extraordinary feat. The fact that they spoke in a language that was not their first, makes it more wonderful. They each spoke about their hopes and dreams for the future, of furthering their education and helping their families, community and country in some way. Their dreams were unselfish. Having been helped themselves, they now want to help others. They spoke clearly and confidently, bringing tears to the eyes of many assembled. They also influenced their listeners. Every year we try to get some of our younger lawyers to present a paper at the conference. This year there were two young female lawyers who rather than speak in front of their peers, donated money to YKIP. When they listened to Eliza, Dewi and Muliati, they realised that if three young high school graduates could speak, so should they. Next year, they have promised to present a paper. Thus the YKIP effect ripples out. “

Peter and Susan Cole

Susan and Peter themselves have also been YKIP committed sponsors since 2007 and they have supported Hery since he was in Elementary school. This year Hery had a chance to meet his sponsors and he said to Susan and Peter that he wants to work in a hotel one day. Hery is now in Grade 11, with only one more year until his high school graduation. Let’s hope for the best for Hery!

Karen Kaplan

Karen visited Komang last June to know more about Komang’s school progress and after high school plans. It’s an appropriate time to ask Komang about her future plans considering that Komang is in Grade 11 this academic year. Komang shared her dreams with Karen that she wants to become a chef one day. She found the passion for cooking and she wants to pursue for life. Therefore, Komang accompanied by Karen, visited one of the hospitality schools in Gianyar in order to fulfill Komang’s curiosity about this career path she chose and Komang really used this chance to get all the information she needed.

West Coast Property Training: Bali Inspire 2014

This year West Coast Property Training gave YKIP the opportunity to introduce the KEMBALI Scholarship Program in front of the participants of Bali Inspire 2014. Purniati, a YKIP staff member who is also a former KEMBALI Scholarship recipient from years 2005 – 2011, clearly explained to the participants about the details of the KEMBALI scholarship program. Through her presentation, the participants themselves saw firsthand the tangible results of the successful program.

Through this opportunity, WCPT raised over AUD $1,700 in funding for YKIP. Several prospective sponsors were also introduced to YKIP, several of whom have now taken their own child to sponsor.

Help us break the cycle of poverty by sponsoring a child through the KEMBALI Scholarship Program. Child sponsorship is a life changing experience; you will not only touch the life of the child you are sponsoring, but you will also see that their success changes the lives of their family and community.

YKIP is extremely grateful for all of the support that the Inspirasia Foundation and PT. Mitrais have given so we are able to deliver educational assistance to disadvantaged children.

The Inspirasia Foundation is a philanthropy portfolio making investments in health & education projects with high potential for growth, helping some of the most marginalized social groups in India, Indonesia, and Thailand, including the disabled, poor young women, and unschooled children. We believe in the power of “What IF.”

The Inspirasia Foundation, established as the Annika Linden Foundation in 2003, was formed as a positive response to the tragic 2002 Bali terror bombing in Kuta, and as a memorial to the spirit of the more than 200 innocent victims of that bomb, among them young Annika Linden. Today, the Inspirasia Foundation supports 16 partners across Asia, including in Bali.

2014 sees Mitrais entering its 12th year of involvement in supporting YKIP activities. Starting from 2002 when Mitrais staff were involved in the Bali Bombings relief action, to more extended support up to today, including the provision of office space, accounting, IT, internet and other volunteer services. Senior Mitrais employees are on the YKIP management board, cementing an already close bond between the two organizations.
