Many of these did not exist until well after the srat time of 1958, and several have been totally reoganised by internal strife. In particular Iran has suffered from a major revolution, although their basic force structure has not been changed. To cover this fact many of the following armies are only listed from the point at which they stabalised to some form of static organisation. There are still some suprising organisations, and equipment mixes. Iran As noted in the paragraph above, the Iranian army has changed considerably in organisation, since the overthrow of the Shah in 1978. This however was forced by the lack of spare parts, and war losses, and offically no changes have been made. A mix of equipment is in service, although most armour is from Western sources. Chinese and Russian vehicles are war booty, captured from Iraq in large quantities during the fighting between 1980 and 1988. I have only given one list, and based it on the pre-revoultionary army. There are notes to cover changes. Iranian BMP’s were purchased without facilites for SAGGER ATGW, it is possible that this was added during the 1st Gulf War, but I have no information on that. 1958 to 1993. NOTE : 17 tank companies are for a pre-revolutionary army. They may still be used in a post revolutionary army. They are represented by the 1st Force points value, the second giving 14 tnak companies, and the third 11 tank companies. The Ruusian and Chinese vehicles are pointed for 11 tanks only. Iraq One of the larger, but apparently less efficient Arab armies, the Iraqi armed forces operate a mixture of Russian, Chinese and third world equipment. Some of this is not paid for, and at least one Austrian arms company went bankrupt due to this. Ever since the Ba’athist party took over the country has been pressing it’s claim to Kuwait, to the point of threatening invasion in 1964. Despite it’s size the army is quite poorly equipped, outside the elite divisions. It did have considerable combat experience, but of a static nature, between 1980 and 1988, fighting Iran. This was financed by other Arab states, in the form of loans. The Iraqis operated a huge quantity of equipment types, some in very small numbers, but much was lost during Desert Storm, and it has not been replaced due to the sanctions. They also hold some vehicles captured from the Iranians, but the status of these is unknown. It is possible that some have been put into service, but spares would be very hard to come by, and it is unlikely that any are used. Chieftains are the possible candidate, but were not used in Desert Storm. Iraqi vehicle production consists of licence produced T72’s, and modifications of T55’s T62’s, and Type 69’s. The list below assumes a front line force, and is complete for the period 1965 to 1993, although unreliable after 1991. Dates indicate the first time equipment can be used. A state formed in the aftermath of World War I, under British protection, Kuwait remained a backwater until the discovery of oil in the late 1950’s. Its protection was under British mandate, with the British accepting responsibility for foreign policy, until the early 1960’s. At this time Kuwait formed its own armed forces from the British equipment stored for emergency use. This policy was continued, with the purchase of sufficient Vickers Mk 1 to form an Armoured Regiment, followed by Chieftains in the late 1970’s. These replaced the Centurions totally, Vickers being transferred to the Mechanised Brigade. By the late 1980’s there were two armoured Brigades with Chieftains, and M113’s, and 1 Mechanised Brigade with Vickers and M113’s. At the time of the Iraqi invasion M84’s [T72B’s ] and BMP-2’s were on order. The list below covers the entire period, initially the unit is a mechanised or infantry brigade, later units are Armoured or Mechanised Brigades. Following 1990/91 the status of much of the older British equipment, such as Saracens, Saladins, Ferrets, and Scorpions is unknown. Dates in the list below shown as [ To XXXX], indicate that the equipment may be used up to that date, [XXXX] indicates that it may be used from that date. Future orders include M1A2, BMP-3, and Desert Warriors(Fahris), these can be used with opponents or organisers agreement for later armies.
