    Introduction

Telecommunications industry deals with the activities and services of electronicsystems for transmitting messages through cables, telephone, radio or television

Components and factors responsible behind the growth of telecommunicationsindustry

Two major factors responsible for the growth of telecommunications industry are useof modern technology and market competition. One of the products of moderntechnologies is optical fibers, which are being used as a medium of data transmissioninstead of using coaxial or twisted pair cables. Optical fibers can carry a high volumeof data and are easier to maintain and install. Use of communication satellites makesthis telecommunications industry a booming industry.

The use of mobile network has a crucial role behind the growth of an improvedtelecommunications industry. Leading companies are showing their interest to investin this telecommunications industry.

Telecommunications industry is going to be a digitized one. Use of ISDN (InterServices Digital Network) makes this telecommunication industry a total digitalizedsystem and eventually enhanced the speed and quality of digital communication.

The introduction of these advanced technologies makes the telecommunicationsindustry a competitive one, where a number of multinational companies have shown

their interest to invest in this industry and consequently the prices are reduced, thequality is also improved. During the period of 1990, the telecommunication industryshowed a speedy growth in terms of investment and eventually increased thecompetition. The competition between the companies led to the decline of revenues.

    History of PTA

The Pakistan Telecommunication Ordinance 1994, established the primary regulatoryframework for the telecommunication industry including the establishment of anauthority. Thereafter, Telecommunication (Re-Organization) Act no XVII was

promulgated in 1996 that aimed to reorganize the telecom sector of Pakistan. UnderTelecom Reorganization Act 1996, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) wasestablished to regulate the establishment, operation and maintenance oftelecommunication systems, and the provision of telecom services.

PTA has its headquarters at Islamabad and zonal offices located at Karachi, Lahore,Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Muzaffarabad.

    Organization Type

PTA is a Strong Matrix Organization. All the functional elements of this

organization are fully responsible for their respective area and have a reasonableauthority which they can exercise for the completion of their assignments and delivery

    of their tasks.

By definition of the strong matrix type organizations following are the key features of

such organizations. A relationship between the key features of the matrix type

organization and the roles and responsibilities of the members of PTA can be

    established as follows:

    Directors

Directors by definition of PTA are program managers. Under one program numerousprojects are being run at the same time in parallel. So in essence a program managerhas a number of project managers in his team for the completion of ongoing projects.Project Managers

The project managers are fully responsible for the delivery of the project from start till

the end. They are given a specific team of individuals to carry out the

micromanagement of the project. During the entire project cycle they are involved in

the planning and execution of the project related activities along with the project

budgets planning required necessary to execute the project. A PM is looking after

project/projects for which he is totally accountable and responsible.

    Specialists

Specialists are Team leads who are responsible for single projects with designated

executives and engineers reporting to him. Specialists of PMs are engaged a lot with

their required necessary team structure. All the specialists or the PMs report to the

overall project manager who is responsible for the overall project along with all the

    ongoing projects and sub projects.

    Project Management Staff

Like the project manager the project management administrative staff is also on a full

time basis. The project management administrative staff is full time responsible to

assist their respective project managers to carry out the day to day activities and

activities of the project towards the closure of the project.

SOFTWARE USE BY THE ORGANIZATIONComputer software or just software is a general term used to describe the role that computerprograms, procedures and documentation play in a computer system.

    The term includes:

Application software such as word processors which perform productive tasks for

    users.

Firmware which is software programmed resident to electrically programmable

memory devices on board main boards or other types of integrated hardware carriers. Middleware which controls and co-ordinates distributed systems.

System software such as operating systems, which interface with hardware to providethe necessary services for application software.

Test ware which is an umbrella term or container term for all utilities and application

software that serve in combination for testing a software package but not necessarilymay optionally contribute to operational purposes. As such, test ware is not a standing

    NETWORK STRUCTURE

A computer networkis a group of interconnected computers. The network allows computers

to communicate with each other and share resources and information. Networks may be

classified according to a wide variety of characteristics. Computer networks can also beclassified according to the hardware and software technology that is used to interconnect the

individual devices in the network, such as Optical fiber, Ethernet, Wireless LAN, Home PNA,

    Power line communication.

Personal Area Network:A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network use in PTA for communication

among computer devices close to one person. Some examples of devices that are used in a

PAN are printers, fax machines, telephones, PDAs and scanners. The reach of a PAN istypically about 20-30 feet (approximately 6-9 meters), but this is expected to increase with

    technology improvements

Local Area Network:A local area network (LAN) is a computer network covering a small physical area, like a

home, office, or small group of buildings, such as a school, or an airport. On a wired LAN,

PCs in the library are typically connected through a system of interconnected devices and

eventually connect to the Internet. The staff computers can get to the color printer,

checkout records, and the academic network and the Internet. All user computers can get tothe Internet and the card catalog. Each workgroup can get to its local printer. Note that the

printers are not accessible from outside their workgroup. The defining characteristics ofLANs, in contrast to WANs (wide area networks), include their higher data transfer rates,

smaller geographic range, and lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines. LAN

technologies operate at speeds up to 10 Gbit/s. This is the data transfer rate.

Campus Area Network:A campus area network(CAN) is a computer network made up of an interconnection of

local area networks (LANs) within a limited geographical area, specific to an academicsetting. In PTA the network is likely to link a variety of campus buildings. A campus area

network is larger than a local area network but smaller than a wide area network (WAN) .

The main aim of a campus area network is to facilitate students of PTAaccessing internetand university resources.

    Wide Area Network:

A wide area network is a network where a wide variety of resources are deployed across a

large domestic area or internationally. PTA uses a WAN to interconnect their offices indifferent countries. The largest and best example of a WAN is the Internet, which is a

network composed of many smaller networks. The Internet is considered the largest

network in the world. The PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) also is an

extremely large network that is converging to use Internet technologies, although notnecessarily through the public Internet.

    Virtual private network:

  • 8/14/2019 Waqas Ahmed Nasir Mis

    15/19

A virtual private network (VPN) is a computer network in which some of the links

between nodes are carried by open connections or virtual circuits in some larger network

(e.g., the Internet) instead of by physical wires. PTA by using a VPN allows computerusers to appear to be editing from an IP address location other than the one which connects

the actual computer to the Internet.

    Wireless network:

Wireless network refers to any type of computer network that is wireless, and iscommonly associated with a telecommunications network whose interconnections between

nodes is implemented without the use of wires. Cellular phones are part of huge wireless

network systems like PTA. People use these phones daily to communicate with oneanother. To make possible sending information overseas PTA is using wireless network

systems using satellites and other signals to communicate across the world. Emergency

services such as the police department utilize wireless networks to communicate important

information quickly. People and businesses use wireless networks to send and share data

quickly. Wireless networks are as an inexpensive and rapid way to be connected to theInternet in countries and regions.

InternetIt consists of a worldwide interconnection of governmental, academic, public, and private

networks based upon the networking technologies of the Internet Protocol Suite. The

Internet is also the communications backbone underlying the World Wide Web (WWW).

PTA 65% work is depending on internet.

    Intranet:

PTA is also using intranet. An intranet is a set of networks, using the Internet Protocol and

IP-based tools such as web browsers and file transfer applications that are under the controlof a single administrative entity. That administrative entity closes the intranet to all but

specific, authorized users. Most commonly, an intranet is the internal network of an

organization. A large intranet will typically have at least one web server to provide users

    with organizational information.

Extranet:An extranet is a network or inter network that is limited in scope to a single organization

or entity but which also has limited connections to the networks of one or more otherusually, but not necessarily, trusted organizations or entities (e.g., a company's customers

may be given access to some part of its intranet creating in this way an extranet, while at

the same time the customers may not be considered 'trusted' from a security standpoint).Technically, an extranet may also be categorized as a CAN, MAN, WAN, or other type ofnetwork, although, by definition, an extranet cannot consist of a single LAN; it must have

at least one connection with an external network.

    ONLINE PRESENCE

With the decrease in the network cost, more users can use broadband network resources. Users

are not merely satisfied with voice and data services. They require more online services thatenable them to interact with each other. Therefore, enterprises increasingly emphasize on how

to build a communication network that integrates voice, data and videoconferencing services,

products sales and purchase services on a single data network, to satisfy versatile

communication requirements of enterprises and all stakeholders. As one of thetelecommunications equipment vendors with the most diverse product lines, PTA has many

outstanding advantages in providing complete solutions to satisfy the multimedia

communication service demands of various enterprises and stakeholders. Coordinating its jointstrengths in data communications, transmission and multimedia products, PTA proposed the

Viewpoint MeNet Multimedia Communication Solution (hereinafter referred to as ViewPoint

MeNet Solution), which thoroughly satisfies versatile communication demands of enterprises. The ViewPoint MeNet Solution provides various services such as video conference,

conference call, videophone, IP telephony, PC to Phone and streaming service online.

How PTA maintain Security & Backup

PTA has developed comprehensive security strategies before focusing on any oneparticular security problem. Security is never ending exercise. PTA faces and ongoing threat from several sources both internal and external PTAsecurity policy is inplace.

    Physical Security

    Release of Information

Policy documents supplied as part of employee work related task or other required-reading resource should not be misquoted or used anywhere else. Failure to complyin many cases is a suitable justification for termination of employment.

    Visitors

Visitor cards are issued to all the visitors of the designated officers of PTA for enteringthe premises after necessary verification.

    Network SecurityAntivirus

PTA use kaspersky Antivirus to save data.

Physical firewallPTA uses physical firewall to Protect from any hazard.

Digital SignatureDigital signature is used in PTA. It is an electronic signature that can be used toauthenticate the identity of the sender of a message or the signer of the document, and possibly to ensure that the original content of the message or document that hasbeen sent is unchanged.

BackupFor backup Pakistan telecommunication authority use compatible hard drive minimumcapacity is 30 GB and maximum 100 GB these hard drives are given tothe department ever weak for storage of data and backup for critical and some timenon critical data also store in it. They also use its IP server for most critical andsecrete data that use only top level management it very secure because itsopen only key words that only know top executive. When they enter the key wordsdata can b converted in to readable format.Key words are very secure it can not be break by any person instead of that person

    who know these key words

    Conclusion & recommendation:

The Pakistan telecommunication authority pursuing cooperation agreements with itsinternational counterparts as well as with various agencies within the country;cooperation, however, needs to be mutual in order to be effective. Our reform agenda

fits in well with the Governments policy and broader reforms of the economy and assuch require necessary support from the Government and public

While the year under review was marked with considerable challenges inimplementation of the envisioned reforms, I assure you that the challenges have onlystrengthened our resolve and belief in fundamental reforms.
