Welcome...What does Christmas mean to you? Is there one true meaning of Christmas, or is it something more personal that carves its own unique definition into the souls of not only Christians around the world, but those of other faiths and those without any religious inclination as well (see pages 18, 28 and 38). As a phrase and a concept, the 'true meaning of Christmas' is relatively new in the wider context of Christianity, with the earliest record of its use first appearing in the 19th century. It is traditionally understood to refer not so much to the Nativity of Christ, but to a more general objection to the commercialisation of the festive season and a reminder that there is more to Christmas than gift buying. It was succinctly defined in The American magazine (volume 28) in 1889: "To give up one's very self – to think only of others – how to bring the greatest happiness to others – that is the true meaning of Christmas."

In the commercialised world in which we live, one could argue, however, that a commercialised Christmas is no less a distraction from its true meaning than package holidays are a distraction from global exploration, or cinema is a distraction from literature – does the former preclude the latter? Perhaps the financial forces at play during this season of over indulgence are vital to fuel the yule tide spirit of a capitalised society, and perhaps we need this fuel to generate the goodwill that the true meaning aspires to. Of course, one could equally argue that it is the very existence of our commercialised society that drives Christmas further and further away from its meaning and origins – a vicious (or virtuous, depending how you look at it) circle that encourages us to spend more and think less. Perhaps the sentiment of Christmas is something that needs to be protected and sustained amidst the pressures of a modern world that can erode those underlying values.

We may be a world divided by religion, distinguished by history and separated by culture, but the true meaning of Christmas is surely one that rises above these differences – and it is certainly worth defining for yourself.

The City of London Corporation are inviting residents to take a look at the newly-restored Temple in Wanstead Park, following a series of improvements made last month. According to a City of London spokesperson, the restoration work has left the 250-year-old building 'looking spick and span'. As well as redecorating the portico, the work also included repairing the flaunching on the chimneys, repointing the external brickwork and repainting the

window frames. The Temple was built in the 1760s as a fashionable garden feature and now

houses displays that tell the story of the Park's fascinating history. During winter, the Temple is

open every weekend and bank holiday (excluding Christmas Day) from 10am to 3pm (free entry).

Philippines appealOrganisers of a community fundraising event in aid of the Philippines disaster appeal are seeking food donations from local residents and restaurant owners. "The plan is to sell hot food in boxes for £5 and we would like any restaurants to contact us if they want to participate," explained organiser Sue Paterson. Five-year photo project preserves the stories of locals

A five-year photography project documenting local tradespeople will this month culminate in the publication of a book, presenting the personal accounts of 41 people local to Wanstead, Chingford and Woodford. Shelf Life E11, E4, E18 – which has

Local music producer releases reggae nursery rhyme album

A music producer and composer from Wanstead has been inspired by his young daughter to release an album of calypso- and reggae-themed nursery rhymes. Toby Salmon, whose past work has included creating music for Pepsi adverts, assembled a collective

Parents and teachers have thanked the local community for backing a successful campaign to prevent the academisation of Snaresbrook Primary School. Following the delivery of a 2,000-strong petition to Downing Street, the Department of Education said:

"The school does not have a history of underperformance and has made significant progress after being judged to require special measures by Ofsted in June. We therefore do not plan to intervene to convert Snaresbrook to an academy."

Inaugural meeting of the Wanstead Park Liaison Group

The first meeting of the new Wanstead Park Liaison Group was held last month at the park's Temple. The group, which is made up of City of London staff and community representatives, aims to coordinate a programme of small-scale park improvements,

volunteering activities and community events. Strategic issues will continue to be dealt with by the Project Steering Group, which began work earlier this year. "I thought we covered lots of ground for the first meeting," said the park's project manager Peter Wilkinson.

Film club of the yearWanstead High School scooped the Film Club of the Year award at the National Youth Film Festival last month. The school, which launched its film club in 2008, received the award for tapping into the resources on offer to inspire pupils and reinforce the curriculum – from writing film reviews to learning about piracy. "It was great to see our young people being interviewed about the award, with their confidence to do so largely down to their involvement with the club," said Assistant Headteacher Melanie Warner.

Wanstead Methodist Church on Hermon Hill will be launching the Wanstead Challenge Youth Club next month, offering a range of activities for 10- to 19-year-olds. The club, which will meet on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 15 January, hopes encourage young people to be part of the church community and to discover new interests and learn new skills. A new local microbrewery will be holding a launch event in Wanstead this month. Upstart Brewing, which is the brainchild of Snaresbrook resident James Weir, will be showcasing their first beer, Upstart Alpha, at a pop-up event at Christ Church hall on

7 December, from 7pm. James, who has been developing beer recipes in his garage, has been commercially brewing Upstart Alpha at the Pitfield Brewery in Moreton, Essex and is now looking for suitable premises to set up a local brewing plant and to increase production.

Community awardsRedbridge residents are being urged to put forward their nominations for the Mayor's Community Awards 2014 before the 31 December deadline. A panel of councillors and people from the local community will then meet to shortlist the nominations and select the winners in the various categories, which include the best business contribution to the community, caring for others in the borough and making a greener Redbridge. A temporary 12-metre swimming pool will be located in 'the Wanstead area' for a12-week period during 2014. "We have over 1,000 people on our lists waiting to learn to swim and this pool in Wanstead is a facility that will help those residents learn an essential life skill. We are negotiating with the provider of the pool to try and extend the time it will be in the borough so that more people can benefit," explained a council spokesman. Subsidised by the Mayor of London, the pool will cost the borough £30,000.

Local photojournalist Carole Edrich has brought out a new version of her Angels in Wanstead calendar – which celebrates community heroes – to raise funds for children with cancer. The limited-edition version (priced £15) was released earlier this year and has been

The Friends of Wanstead Parklands – a community group concerned with the preservation of Wanstead Parklands – have published a new set of articles detailing the history of the park's lake system. Of the nine significant water bodies created in the park between

1715 and 1745, only five now survive: The Basin; Shoulder of Mutton Pond; Heronry Pond; Perch Pond; and the Ornamental Water. The others were all abandoned in the early 19th century and the reasons for this are explored in the 15-article series. Visit wavidi.com/thelakes

Weather patterns over Europe this autumn have probably left Father Christmas wondering how on earth

he is going to deliver all the presents on time. A warm Atlantic, coupled with an erratic jet stream, has left things very damp in Wanstead. Rainfall since the beginning of October has been 144% above average – the wettest for 10 years – while the mean temperature is over half a degree warmer than normal. It is all a far cry from the last few years, which were much colder and dryer.

While it is possible that Wanstead may have already seen the first snowflakes of winter fall by early December, the weather patterns up to now have been far too mobile to suggest that any cold weather will last. With the jet stream close by, it is possible that the weather pattern that spawned the St Jude's day storm – which downed large mature lime trees on Christchurch Green at the end of October – will return. And if it does, it could stay locked in

until the end of the month. There will obviously be quieter spells, but patterns observed through the autumn, together with various forecasting models, suggest that mild, wet and windy weather is much more likely this Christmas day.

The chaotic behaviour of the atmosphere makes forecasting detail beyond three days extremely difficult – very often forecasts just a few hours old can be wrong. As I write this, the CFS model, which forecasts up to nine months ahead, is suggesting this pattern for Christmas day: a complex triple-point low anchored south of Iceland, driving a very mild and windy south-westerly flow. With Wanstead being close to a high over Europe, there could be a lot of brightness, with any rain being showery and light – expect 10ºC and feeling balmy if the sun comes out.

need one or two extra reindeer to cope with high-level headwinds well in excess of 100mph. Unless, of course, Rudolph has been keeping up to date with events that have seen a fairly stormy autumn period and trained accordingly.

With a mix of snow and, sadly (most probably) rain in Wanstead, Santa would also be wise to select the sleigh with the interchangeable wheels and snow runners, not to mention extra nets to prevent likely violent wind shear from displacing all the parcels. With all this extra energy needed to deliver the presents, perhaps this year parents would be wise to leave out a couple of bananas for Rudolph and his colleagues, together with the customary glass of milk and parsnips.

Beyond Christmas, the predictions for winter are mixed – there is no signal to suggest a severe winter or a very mild winter. Last winter, we had a major stratospheric warming, leading to some very cold easterly spells. It is rare for these to occur in successive years, so perhaps there will be fewer easterlies this winter.

Overall, it would appear that the coming season is going to be a winter of rapid changes – one week cold, the next mild – leading to

mean temperatures being slightly below average. I would expect numerous rainy days, with far fewer frosty, dry and cold spells than last winter. Given the erratic jet stream, incursions of very cold air from the north could give some transient snowfalls.

This month is the 51st anniversary of the start of the severe winter of 1962 to 1963, when large parts of the UK were snowbound for six weeks. The mean temperature in Wanstead for December 1962 and January and February 1963 was 0.15ºC. To put that into some kind of perspective, last winter, which was considered cold and never-ending by some, had a mean temperature of 4.15ºC.

Though history has a habit of repeating itself, I believe it will be flooding rather than snow and ice (certainly in the south), that makes the headlines this winter.

Christmas means...18

My name is Jean and I have lived in Wanstead for 25 years. I have a husband, two sons and daughter-in-

laws and three lovely grandchildren. I was a PA to a solicitor for the first half of my working life and a classroom assistant until I retired. I am a guide at St Paul's Cathedral and sang in the London Emmanuel Choir. Approaching Christmas, my folk are looking forward to all the joys of family celebrations, with food and presents and all the rest. But none of us can help but remember those suffering in the Philippines and in other places, where hunger, pain and loneliness have blighted their lives.

My family were refugees from Hitler's Germany and I remember searching for boxes to sit on in the accommodation we were given in Manchester. Tragically, I was separated from my family in my early teens and placed in an abusive foster home. When we hear of terrible disasters and experience desperation and despair ourselves, questions are often asked. Why does God not intervene? Why does he leave us alone? I have no simple answer to these questions, but I offer you these thoughts.

As a small boy, my husband holidayed on his uncle's farm, and he can still remember the stench and slime of the farmyard and stables. God sent his son to be born in such a place; to live our life, to die our death and to rise again to give us eternal life. And I believe that today the living Lord Jesus is with me – no matter what.

In the 19th century, the following words were found on the wall of a man's cell in an insane asylum, after he had been carried to his grave: Could we with ink the ocean fill And were the skies of parchment made, Were every blade of grass a quill And every man a scribe by trade, To write the love of God above Would drain the ocean dry, Nor could the scroll contain the whole Though stretched from sky to sky!

Can you feel the joy in these words of this man – I can. He had an experience of the presence and love of God that nothing – nothing – could take away. Even as little girl in a family with no religious beliefs, my favourite Christmas present was a book about Jesus. Later, I realised that Jesus had come into the world to live and die for me and to open for me the door to eternal life. I surrendered my life to him – and he has never left me. I was reading the Bible as a teenager when I came across this verse and it has remained with me ever since: 'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.'

I pray for those who suffer this Christmas, many of whom have truly passed through the waters. May they, like the man in his cell – and the shepherds and the wise men – know for sure that God has come to them personally and is with them in their need.

Regular visitors to Wanstead Park will know that the lakes have experienced prolonged periods of low water levels,

which has had a negative impact on the historic landscape and also threatened the park's nationally-important heritage status.

The aim of the study, which will last until April 2014, is to review and improve the understanding of the sustainability of the lake system in its present form. To do this, we are developing a water budget. This budget can be considered analogous to a household budget, with inflows to the lake, such as rainfall or drainage discharges, representing income, and loses, such as leakage and evaporation, representing expenditures. In this context, a full lake represents a balanced budget, with overflows representing periods of surplus and low water levels equivalent to debt.

At present, water is pumped from a borehole in the chalk aquifer to sustain the lake levels in the summer. To extend the analogy, this could be considered to be the equivalent of a credit card, of which the continued use of to balance the books is unsustainable.

The water budget will be determined using a computer model of the lake system, which will enable us to consider the complex interactions between rainfall, groundwater and the levels in the lakes. Using a computer model will also allow us to understand historic periods of low water, as well as testing how the lakes might respond during a period of drought in the future. The outputs from the study will be a number of options for reducing the shortfall of water. This may include finding additional sources of water supply or reducing leakage from the lake system.

Throughout October, a bathymetric survey of the lake beds was undertaken. This type of survey records the depth of the lakes at a number of points and enables us to determine the volume of water each lake can hold – an important consideration for the water budget.

We have undertaken a review of the recorded water levels in the lakes and surrounding groundwater and, with the lake volume information, we have begun to build the computer model for the water budget. We anticipate initial results from the computer model to emerge early in the New Year. In conjunction with the City of London Corporation and Friends of Wanstead Parklands we will then begin to review the feasibility of the options to reduce the shortfall of water.

We are very thankful to the Friends of Wanstead Parklands for their continued assistance with this project and look forward to contributing to the restoration and regeneration of this historic parkland.

Support groups at Wanstead House for parents who have lost a child

Begin to Heal is a 10-week guided therapy programme directed by counsellors with many years of experience. Parents are given the opportunity to share their feelings and experiences. What makes Begin to Heal different from any other support group is the learning part. Delivered in an empathic, realistic way, participants are given the skills and information they can use in their life to begin to recover from their loss. Many parents who have lost a child have other children who are grieving the loss of their sibling; Begin to Heal teaches parents how to support their other children, their parents and friends.

The aim of Begin to Heal is to empower grieving parents to help themselves and to help others by giving them the tools they can use to strengthen their family and their friendships. Each two-hour session is free of charge and any parent who has lost a child of any age is welcome to attend. However, because of the structured content of each session, we find parents benefit most if they join a Begin to Heal programme at the start.

The Healing Place is monthly drop-in support group with a difference. When a child dies, their grieving parents suddenly join a club nobody wants to be a member of. Nothing seems the same after such a loss. As parents struggle to come to terms with what has happened

to them, they often become more isolated from the people who had been in their lives before their bereavement. Relationships become strained and friendships drift, exactly at a time when human contact is most needed. Other people, even friends of many years, feel awkward; neighbours and colleagues use avoidance tactics, nobody wants to say anything for fear of saying the wrong thing.

“If you mention my child’s name I might cry, but if you don’t mention it, you will break my heart!”

The Healing Place gives parents the chance to talk about their children, to share their experiences and to receive and give support to others in similar situations. Each two-hour session, held on the first Monday of every month, is free of charge and is professionally facilitated, although the aim is that participants lead the content.

Any parent who has lost a child of any age can attend. Most parents who attend The Healing Place have already been on one of the Begin to Heal 10-week courses, or are signed up to attend the next one that runs.

I have always loved Christmas. That may seem strange on two counts. Firstly because I'm Jewish and secondly because I'm an

atheist, brought up by staunchly atheistic parents. I don't think I ever believed in Santa Claus, let alone any of the Gospels.

So what is it that I love? A strong Jewish tradition, which doesn't depend on any religious belief, is the importance attached to just sitting round a table with family and friends eating and talking. This may well be the case for other cultures as well, but sadly for many, the concept seems to be disappearing, replaced by fast food meals eaten in front of the telly.

Therefore, one reason for Christmas being so special is the setting aside of the daily grind and the common expectation of spending whole days just feasting, talking and rejoicing in each other's company. Indeed, feasting for many Jews is itself an expression of our love. It is considered shameful to run out of any dish and the third helping is greatly encouraged. The classic response, on selecting one type of cake, is a guilt-trip laden: "So, what's wrong with the other cake then?"

The lack of any religious element has never detracted from my enjoyment of the season. In fact, for me, the triggers for that Christmassy feeling – the sense of a special occasion, warmth and celebration – are completely disconnected from any religious connotations. This was brought home when I spent one Christmas in Australia. The pavements were melting from the heat, but the Christmas spirit was still engendered by Father Christmases in their stifling costumes, by artificial snow in the windows and by reindeer, all of which I suspect were absent from Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.

One view of Christmas that I do share with the devout is a dislike of the pervasive commerciality that now accompanies it. I've always enjoyed getting presents, but it was always the thought

behind the present, not the value, which touched me, and as a child the simplest gifts were often the most cherished. Heaving myself through the dense crowds in Westfield last Christmas, it struck me how this mad throng of consumers represented, on a huge scale, the complete opposite of the religious Christmas message.

The desire to celebrate and to mark time and events is a very human one, which Humanists share with most people, whatever their beliefs. It is hardly coincidental that the period of the winter solstice has been celebrated by so many throughout the ages around the world. The Romans, who really knew how to party, had their Saturnalia and we can thank the northern European pagans for yule logs and Hogmanay.

As one great former east London resident, atheist and humanist, William Morris, famously said: "Fellowship is life and lack of fellowship is death." Christmas really is the season to be jolly. It is a time when we can all feel free to celebrate life and our common humanity, not only with our friends and our family, but also with complete strangers. So happy Christmas everyone!

In 1955, when I moved to Wanstead, a school friend of mine, who was a choirboy at Christ Church, told me that if I joined the church,

he would allocate me a girlfriend rather than have me pinch one of his. He was true to his word, as I met Sheila, who I later married, and we recently celebrated our golden wedding anniversary. We attend church regularly, but I admit that, back then, I was probably more interested in girls than religion!

There wasn't any room in the choir for me, but there was a vacancy as a bell-ringer. Also, the man who maintained the bells above our heads, the bell tower keeper, was suffering with his health and was having difficulty crawling up through the small trapdoors and over the bells. So, at the age of 16, I offered to take his place and I have been crawling through small spaces ever since, checking ropes and pulleys high above the town, silently tending to the needs of eight brooding brazen maidens.

I have also taught bell management to many people. It takes about six weeks to learn how to control the bell and then ring in with your fellow band of ringers. Good bell control is important, as our big bell generates enough force through the rope to lift a small van, so letting go at the right time is vital, to avoid bodily contact with the ceiling.

There then follows a lifetime of learning various methods and combining teamwork with individual ability, thereby practicing the art of change ringing. Change ringing originated in England some 400 years ago and, over the centuries, bells have proclaimed the presence of the Church in the community – summoning to worship, rung for weddings and important occasions and tolled for funerals – so I feel we are a rather special breed of people. Our own weekly bell practice concludes with a quiz night at the Nightingale pub – a perfect end to the day.

The first ring of six bells at Christ Church was installed in 1869. The benefactor at the time stipulated they be made of steel, which I'm afraid makes a horrid sound, like scaffolding being dismantled. Fortunately for us now, they rusted and were replaced with a bronze set in 1934.

In 1972, two further bells were added to complete the octave, and thereby hangs a tale. A choir member, with whom we bantered over his utter dislike of all things to do with ringing, had bequeathed a sum of money to be spent on the church organ upon his death, which occurred

tragically early. However, the organ had only just been overhauled, so Christ Church consulted his family, who agreed to fund the installation of a new bell frame and the casting of two new bells, with his name preserved forever, inscribed thereon in Latin. I'm sure he would have been totally bemused but delighted with the outcome of his beneficence.

As for my future in the tower, well, as my knees are creaking a bit these days, I am training a very able apprentice to take over the maintenance, but I fully intend to carry on ringing bells in perpetuity.

Hinduism is very tolerant and understanding of other religions, so we as Hindus celebrate Christmas just

as much as we do Diwali, it isn't part of our religion, but we share a lot of its values and meanings.

We give gifts to our friends and family for both Christmas and Diwali and we celebrate together. In our home, we put up a Christmas tree every year and decorate the house, and on Christmas day we all scramble to open our presents first thing in the morning. Unlike devout Christians, we may not go to church at Christmas, but apart from that, we celebrate the festival in much the same way.

Weary from the previous night's merriment, we all muck in to help prepare the Christmas dinner – for about 50 people – only stopping to watch the Queen's speech and the Eastenders Christmas special. The food is mostly traditional fare, including the all-important turkey and pigs in blankets. Some of our family are vegetarians, so we do make a veggie option for them, and our gravy is renowned for its extra kick of chilli.

The children in our family enjoy Christmas more than they do Diwali, because they are more familiar with Christmas celebrations than those for Diwali – the fact that they have more holidays also helps. For us, Diwali is more of a religious festival, whereas Christmas, without being disrespectful of its religious meaning to Christians, is more about family, eating, drinking and having a good time. Every year, without fail, we spend the day together as a family, and being a national holiday makes that easier to do than during Diwali, which isn't recognised in the same way, so not everyone can take the time off to get together.

The kids in our family believe in Father Christmas and so they leave milk and carrots outside for the reindeer and mince pies and a glass of sherry on the fireplace. They are always wonderfully

delighted on seeing them finished in the morning – not knowing, of course, that our pet dogs had lapped up the milk and carrots and their granddad had scoffed the pies late on Christmas Eve.

For us, Christmas is a very exciting and merry time of year, and one that we look forward to every year. Regardless of what religion you are, we think that the spirit of Christmas, through its traditions of giving, togetherness and charity, resonates through us all. So we say: eat, drink and have a merry Christmas!

behind the big push to encourage shoppers to explore businesses at the Snaresbrook end of the High Street. She says: "We have some great independent shops along this part of the street, but so many people only walk so far, and miss out."

Shop owners and town centre officers are now working together to find ways to publicise the attractive businesses along the length of the street, and want to encourage even more independents to open in Snaresbrook. The local business group has now changed its name to the Wanstead and Snaresbrook Business Partnership, to reflect the involvement of those at the far end. And the shops are planning local promotions to persuade people to make more extensive use of their local shops. Christmas street decorations are being shown along the Snaresbrook stretch, whereas they used to only appear further back, and carol singers are being lined up to provide entertainment during the festive season.

Savvy shoppers already make a beeline to Revive, which sells designer and stylish clothes and accessories for women and men at affordable prices. The business is also eco-friendly, by giving a new life to pre-loved items, and is valuable for those who want to sell on their own smart clothes. Owner Nicola also offers a consultation service – she can show customers how to zero in on styles that will suit them, or will help select an outfit for a specific event.

Other businesses along the same stretch include the large pet shop, which stocks hardware and some haberdashery; an electrical appliance shop that carries out home repairs; a health food shop; a traditional barber shop; a couple of smart restaurants; and, around the corner on Hermon Hill, a luxury bathroom showroom, which also sells outstanding artwork by local artists. Back on the High Street there is a new toy shop, a popular tea room and a florist, Lillies of Wanstead, selling a range of gifts and Christmas decorations. Kay

Stavrou, co-owner of Lillies, said she and other traders would like to see market stalls extend up to their end of the street. She says, from the point of view of Snaresbrook residents: "We are not the end of the High Street. We are the start of it!"

Time For Tea, which started up a year ago, has already become a draw in Snaresbrook, opening seven days a week. Co-owner Tracy Reed says the tearoom is applying for permission to use pavement space out the front of the premises for more tables, to create an even more appealing frontage to Snaresbrook's shops. The tearoom already has a small rear courtyard garden installed by creative designers Pocket of Green, showing vintage teacups "growing" on trees. See it before the courtyard scheme is changed in the New Year. Time For Tea also sells vintage goods and artwork, and is used as a craft workshop venue for adults and children.

Maps are a way to understand our world� Without them we would be literally lost� But in a new exhibition at Redbridge Museum, maps are used to explore the local history of Ilford, Wanstead and Woodford� Museum Manager Gerard Greene guides the way

ON THE MAP



The exhibition begins by exploring the history of European map making, from medieval mappa mundi to Victorian

cyclists' maps, from the A-Z to today's smart phones. Thanks to satellite technology, we now have a map of the world in the palm of our hand.

The earliest maps of the local area clearly show Wanstead and the surrounding area as being part of Essex, not London. Chapman and Andre's survey of 1777 is probably the first large-scale detailed map of the area we have. It was the first to depict minor roads, and included every country house and cottage (usually named), milestone, bridge, turnpike, creek, ferry, cliff and many other features.

On all these early maps, the great estates of the 17th and 18th centuries are clearly visible. There was, of course, none greater than Wanstead House, which dominated the surrounding area.

Jean Rocque's plan of 1735 shows how the then owner of Wanstead, Richard Child, was aiming to enlarge the estate. Wings were to be added to the house and the gardens were to be extended into Snaresbrook to the north.

Rocque worked as a designer of gardens in the beginning of his career. He designed the landscapes for aristocracy and the royal family at Kensington Palace, Richmond Garden, Windsor Castle, Sion House, Kew Gardens and Chiswick. This income and his connections helped him in his map-making career.

Ten years later, in 1746, Rocque published a large-scale series of maps called Environs of London. It is probably no coincidence that on this he managed to 'stretch' the boundaries of London to include the lake system of Wanstead Park, which he had of course designed himself!

Maps have recorded the oldest things in Redbridge – its natural features. Geological and topographical plans describe what the ground is made of (mostly London clay) and its height (hilly in the north of the borough to low ground in the south).

Another part of the exhibition shows what else is hidden under the ground. An archaeologist's detailed plan of a 2,500-year-old Iron Age camp in Ilford shows what can be discovered through careful excavations.

revealed by studying maps at this time. A printed, hand-coloured map of 1914 shows the area governed by the Wanstead Urban District Council. Many of the notable buildings on this map still exist, although they may now have different purposes. These include Wanstead Infant Orphan Asylum, which opened in 1843 and was latterly a boarding school until closing in 1971. It is now Snaresbrook Crown Court. The Merchant Seaman's Orphan Asylum, Hermon Hill, opened in 1863, becoming a convent in 1919 and then Wanstead Hospital from 1938 to 1986. It is now flats, while the chapel is a synagogue.

During this time, Wanstead's population had steadily risen from 7,097 in 1891 to around 16,000 in 1914. As more people moved to Wanstead, the Urban District Council was created in 1894. In 1934, it joined with Woodford and became Wanstead and Woodford Borough Council in 1937, finally merging with Ilford to become the London Borough of Redbridge in 1965.

The destruction of World War II is evidenced in a map that shows the incidents of bombing inflicted on Redbridge. In Wanstead and Woodford, 250 people were killed, with 1,300 injured, 509 houses destroyed and

thousands more damaged. Due to its denser population, neighbouring Ilford suffered even worse damage. Redbridge Council planning officers still use the bomb map to check for potential subsidence when assessing building applications.

The exhibition closes with a glimpse of what may have been. This includes a City of London proposal to build a new airport for London in Fairlop plains, near Barkingside, in the years before World War II. After the war, the plan was dropped in favour of a small west London airfield – today's Heathrow airport.

While many of the archive maps on display are part of the collections of the Museum or Redbridge Information and Heritage, the more recent ones have been produced by Redbridge Council's Planning and Regeneration team, showing that maps continue to be a vital way to help navigate our world. A

We are a group of four professional harpists. We perform both classical and contemporary music that we

arrange, commission and compose. As you might expect, there are very few harp quartets in existence and, having notched up 25 performance in 2013, we must be the busiest.

Although the group have been performing together for over 10 years, I only joined in January. Sometimes, being a harpist can be a lonely experience, as we mainly do solo recitals and play in orchestras, where we are usually the only harpist, so the idea of being part of a group of four was something that really appealed to me. I was delighted to be selected after auditioning for the group and, one week after joining, I was busy posing in the snow in Buckinghamshire for new publicity photographs of the group with my fellow harpists, Harriet Adie, Keziah Thomas and Eleanor Turner.

It was then that we also decided to record a new album of Christmas music. We made the choice of which carols to record by drawing up a list of our personal favourites and then narrowing those down to a good mix of faster pieces as well as some slow and atmospheric ones. We know that many associate harps with angels and Christmas images, but we also hope that while listening to 4 Girls 4 Harps at Christmas you might hear a few surprises. Harriet has arranged We Three Kings in an unusually jazzy style and What Child is This sounds almost like a progressive rock track. But rest assured, alongside these unexpected arrangements you will also hear the traditional; a beautifully calm arrangement of Silent Night and Oh Holy Night performed with guest soprano Helen Winter.

The recording took place in April at Harriet's parent's house in Devon. They run a popular music festival called the Two Moors Festival, which 4 Girls 4 Harps have previously performed at on four occasions. It was very bizarre to be rehearsing and recording Christmas music in the

warm spring weather and we had plenty of bird song and sheep bleating to contend with. The recording process was extremely exhausting, having to repeat sections of music over and over again until we got the perfect take. At the end of the recording period, an audience of local festival supporters were invited to a informal concert and we were able to perform a few of the carols we had spent so many hours on that week.

Since recording, there hasn't been much time to draw breath, as 4 Girls 4 Harps had a busy summer of concerts in Buckingham, Lyddington and Bromsgrove and then, in early September, I also got married to James, who is a percussionist. After a three-week honeymoon in India, I will have got my fingers back into shape ready for our December tour of concerts; harpist's fingers do not like going on holiday.

The campaign to secure the future of the Evergreen Field adjacent to Christchurch Green on Wanstead High Street as a

community amenity is gathering pace.

Scott Wilding, chair of the Wanstead Society, explained that, ideally, the Everybody's Evergreen group would like to see the field incorporated into Christchurch Green itself. Having lost several of the green's beautiful mature trees in the St Jude's day storm on 28 October, the large trees on Evergreen Field have become even more valuable as a resource for the future. They need care and protection.

The aim is that the field would be landscaped so that it could be used by community groups for special events and by the residents of Wanstead on a daily basis.

At present, the Wanstead Society is, legally, a small charity, and therefore has limited access to grants and funding. By becoming a registered charity, additional funding would be possible and we are now actively exploring this option. Fundraising, however, has already begun, with raffles being held at our socials.

Photographer Geoff Wilkinson of the Eightyfour gallery on Nightingale Lane provided photos of Wanstead for a calendar, which has been selling very well at Bennetts of London newsagent on the High Street and through our website. The May 2014 picture (opposite) shows the view of the magnificent spire of Christ Church from the High Street, rising from behind a leafy Evergreen Field. This is a sight to preserve for future generations. The owner of Bennetts told us that every year people ask for a Wanstead calendar and she was pleased that now there is one.

There has been widespread support from the community and from former residents of Wanstead for enhancing and providing public access to the field, and the Wanstead Society committee has been touched by the generous donations it has received so far. However, we still

need some more ideas and volunteers to help us with our fundraising events. A steering group has been formed to lead the project and there are vacancies for two or three additional people who have some time and energy available to help in the planning and carrying out of fundraising activities for 2014.

My name is Vanessa and I was referred to Haven House Children's Hospice in Woodford Green when my son,

Jayden, was 18 months old. He was born six weeks prematurely and was diagnosed with lissencephaly, a rare neurological disorder. He suffered from seizures and visual impairment and needed round-the-clock care. Jayden was fed via a tube into his stomach and also experienced severe reflux.

As a single parent, I needed help, and that was when Jayden's palliative care nurse introduced me to Haven House. Over the next five years, Jayden regularly went to the hospice for respite care, and also had 10 sleepovers a year. All of this was completely free to me.

Sadly, on 19 December 2012, Jayden passed away in hospital aged just seven years. The presents I had bought, wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree would never be opened. My life as full-time carer and mother to Jayden was over. As I sat watching him slip away from me, the only thing I could take comfort from was that I could call Haven House and have Jayden transferred there after his death. He loved his visits to the hospice and it was the only place where I wanted to be.

Even in death you naturally want the best for your child and, undoubtedly, round here, Haven House is the best. Jayden was taken by a private ambulance to the Butterfly Suite – a special climate-controlled room equipped with a cool bed – for five days. When I saw him, he looked so peaceful. It was nice not to have people rushing about and to see him with no tubes and other medical equipment around him. All those who had loved Jayden in his short life were able to say their goodbyes.

The thought of how different the scenario would have been without Haven House hardly bears thinking about. While I was making arrangements for the funeral it was a comfort to know that he was being looked after by the nurses. He was never left alone and they played soft music and read his favourite stories to him. The staff were so understanding and welcoming and we

had access to the suite day or night. If we wanted to be alone we could be, or

if I needed someone to talk to, it was never a problem.

Since then, Haven House has slowly helped me come to terms with my

loss. I am undergoing a 12-week counselling course and I am

also in regular contact with the bereavement sister and other Haven House mums, who can understand what I am going through. I consider myself so incredibly lucky

that Jayden and I were able to share such a wonderful place together and

benefit from their support since he passed away.

Please do give to Haven House if you can. Their work is so important – it changes and enriches lives. There are going to be other families who need their care and it would be awful for them not to have the same experience as I did due to lack of funding.

The death of Sir Josiah Child in 1699, and the publication of his will, resulted in some embarrassing revelations

about the state of relationships within the family. Child's eldest surviving son, also Josiah (c. 1668-1704), had latterly been out of favour with his father on account of his "disobedience". Although Josiah II could not be prevented from succeeding as 2nd Baronet, his father's will left him no more than had been settled upon him at the time of his marriage in 1691. His sister Mary, who had married against their father's wishes, was similarly treated, being left only £5. It was Josiah's younger half-brother, Richard, who had been made their father's principal heir, and he came into possession of the Wanstead estate at the age of 19.

The division in the family fortune was not to last long. Sir Josiah died of pleurisy in 1704 and, as his marriage had been childless, Richard succeeded him as 3rd baronet. He also inherited the £4,000 per annum that had been settled upon Josiah for life, bringing his own annual income to some £10,000. Earlier the same year, Richard had married Dorothy, daughter and heiress of John Glynne of Henley Park, Surrey. They were to be married for 40 years, until Dorothy's death in 1744.

Like his father and brother, Sir Richard Child was a Member of Parliament. He has been described as having inherited from his father "a certain political flexibility", which enabled him to make the transition between the Stuart and Hanoverian regimes. Also like his father, he was determined to advance his family into the ranks of the nobility. In June 1711, a rumour spread that he was about to purchase a peerage for £10,000. Nothing came of the speculation, though the talk of a peerage was

renewed in the winter of 1711 and again in early March 1713. However, in 1715, he finally succeeded in completing the family's journey from its mercantile origins by purchasing his ennoblement via Melusine von der Schulenburg, Duchess of Munster (afterwards Kendal). The Duchess was, for many years, King George I's principal mistress, and a leading member of the horde of rapacious German hangers-on who sapped his popularity.

Sir Richard Child had to wait a further three years before he was formally gazetted as "Viscount of Castlemaine in the County of Kerry and Baron of Newtown in the County of Donegal". The Child family had no known connection with Ireland, and neither Richard Child nor his successor appears to have taken up his seat in the Irish House of Lords. However, Irish Peerages had two advantages for an Englishman. Firstly, if money was involved in their acquisition, they tended to be cheaper than their English equivalents. Secondly, they did not disbar the holder from seeking election to the British House of Commons.

In 1731, Child was promoted in the Irish Peerage as Earl Tylney of Castlemaine. In 1733, he assumed the surname Tylney by Act of Parliament, to comply with the terms of an inheritance from his wife's uncle, Frederick Tylney of Rotherwick.

As far as Wanstead is concerned, Richard Child's impact cannot be understated. As we shall see next month, he rebuilt Wanstead House as a spectacular neo-Palladian palace, and transformed the gardens in two vast phases of work, the expense of which ultimately almost ruined him. The result, in the words of Nathaniel Salmon around 1740, was that Earl Tylney's seat at Wanstead in its "situation,

building, waters, gardens and the hereditary command of the forest, may be said to exceed any in England."

In paintings by Catton, Hogarth and Nollekens (as shown here), and various written accounts, we can catch glimpses of life at Wanstead in the Earl's time. In 1731: "Lord Tilney gave a grand Entertainment at his fine Seat at Wanstead to his tenants and all the Parish of Wanstead, of both sexes, which were about 100 in number; and in the Evening was a Ball, which continued till Two the next Morning." In the same year: "several Foreign Ministers, and other Persons of Distinction, had a elegant Dinner at the Lord Tilney's, at his fine Seat at Wanstead, and in the Evening went to the Assembly House in Epping Forest, where they had a neat Cold Collation and Diversion at Quadrille till Twelve at Night, then danced till about Five yesterday Morning."

Earl Tylney of Castlemaine died in 1750 at Aix-en-Provence, though his body was returned

to Wanstead for burial. He was succeeded by his third son, John, his two eldest sons having died young. The Earl and Countess had nine known children, but only one of those, Emma, was to leave issue, by her husband Robert Long, whose descendants inherited Wanstead after 1784.

Although the magnificent house and gardens that Earl Tylney created at Wanstead will forever assure him of at least a footnote in history, both were essentially means to an end: to help buy his acceptance as a member of the elite. In this he failed. As A. C. Hotson put it: "he did not gain access to high political or court circles, and did not found a long-standing dynasty. His tragedy was to be surrounded by the trappings of the ruling class without being part of it."

A few years ago I received the FIFA football video game as a birthday present and began playing the odd

match here and there, usually coinciding with my wife's Eastenders time. However, the game's manager mode gradually took over my life as I began to assemble my own team to play in the English Premiership. As a bit of a twist, I decided to use friends' names to create the players for the team (some living locally, but also friends living in Australia, New Zealand and America), and so the Kalbarri Bullfrogs were born, managed by Rodriguez La Bamba.

The name for the team came from a small town in western Australia called Kalbarri, where I once came across a field of marauding bullfrogs during a travelling jaunt down under. I don't remember how I came across the manager's name, but Rodriguez takes the Spanish equivalent of my own name. Where the La Bamba part came from I don't remember, just something quirky.

I then got the idea of providing running commentaries for the games I played. I emailed my squad of 16 real-life friends to describe to them what I was doing, but got no reply. On average, I played one game a week to coincide with the football season, but after emailing the first game commentary and waiting a couple of days, I still got no response from anyone. At this point, I was feeling quite exposed and worried about being ostracised and labelled as someone who was losing their marbles, but I decided to persevere. I reported on the second game, sent another email to the squad and received, yet again, no responses.

Frustration had now crept in, along with a little annoyance at the lack of acknowledgement for my efforts. So, I tried one more time. For the third match, I dropped half the team, replaced them with substitutes and tried a different tactical formation. Within minutes of sending the email out, I was inundated with replies from the players asking why they had been dropped. From that

moment on, the email banter started and the Kalbarri Bullfrogs played out a virtual season.

It was about half way through the season that I had the notion of writing a book based on the team. I realised I had a bank of emails that contained a lot of material, telling the story of how the players and team had progressed during the season. I then began noting down little anecdotes involving my friends, real events and experiences that happened. I also started writing some fictional characters to embellish the story further and the book started to take shape.

That's how The Story of the Kalbarri Bullfrogs materialised. It is a spoof, taking the mickey out of footballing clichés, but also having fun documenting real and fictional events and stories, some of which are based in Wanstead, London and abroad. When I had enough material, I decided to self-publish and, within six months of that decision, the book now enjoys pride of place on the living room bookshelf.

A client came to see me once and said: "I need a lawyer to help me with my divorce and I don't want a pussycat – I

want a tiger!" Fine, I thought, I'm happy to be tigerish in ensuring my client gets a fair settlement, but when two parties are at war, as was the case here, the last thing they need are opposing lawyers fanning the flames. All that does is add to the stress all round and bump up the costs. There is a better way.

Resolution, which was formerly known as the Solicitors Family Law Association (SFLA), is an organisation of 6,500 family lawyers and other professionals in England and Wales, who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law matters. The group also campaign for improvements to the family justice system.

Resolution members are committed to easing the pain and the financial cost of family breakdown. They are encouraged to find solutions rather than confrontation and to take into account the needs of the whole family. If you have children, they encourage you to put your differences aside and work towards a resolution that will minimise the negative impact on them and give the best opportunity for everyone involved to rebuild their lives.

The cornerstone of membership of Resolution is adherence to their code of practice, which sets out the principles of a non-confrontational approach to family law matters. The principles of the code are widely recognised and have been adopted by the Law Society as recommended good practice for all family lawyers. The code requires lawyers to deal with each other in a civilised way and to encourage their clients to put their differences aside and reach fair agreements.

Resolution supports the development of family lawyers through its national and regional training programmes, through publications and good practice guides and through its accreditation scheme. Resolution also trains and accredits mediators and is the only body providing

training and support for collaborative lawyers in England and Wales.

When a relationship ends, couples need the right advice and support. Family, friends and colleagues can be extremely helpful, but are no substitute for assistance and advice from a skilled professional. By choosing any Resolution-accredited specialist in one of the areas of family law that the organisation's lawyers specialise in, you will be safe in the knowledge that he or she has the right level of expertise to deal with it.

During a chilly but eventful Wanstead

Festival, the Wanstead Golf Club

stand was an active area, with both

the young and the old keen to try their

skills on the fun golf equipment, along with

an app used to cure your hook or shank

without hitting a ball. This equipment,

along with video coaching of your swing,

are all available with PGA professional

David Hawkins.

His aim now during this autumn is to give

the opportunity for younger golfers to

come and enjoy the fantastic golf environ-

ment there is at Wanstead. Fun and enjoy-

ment, as well as learning to win and accept

losing, are the name of the game.

there will be a chance for

adults to bring their chil-

dren to the club outside the

set guide times dictated by

lessons, to allow budding

McIlroys the chance to practice on their

own shorter golf course he has set up.

After what has been a very successful

season, the junior section has grown from

two active members to over 20, with some

very keen girl members as well. With

the introduction of coaching through the

autumn and the intermediate and elite

junior programme through autumn and

winter, all looks very promising for 2014.
