Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival 2012 - 4th Annual

THE BEER LIST 2012 – draft (final beer list may vary, but only slighty…)

Welcome to the 4th

October Halloween Festival and 8th

in our series of twice yearly beer

festivals. There is a massive influence of new, hard to find, and genuinely unique beers

this time round. Be absolutely sure to sample the Gothic 666 beer a collaboration

between hosts Le Gothique and this years sponsor Shepherd Neame.

Bateman’s, Wainfleet, Lincolnshire Bateman’s Dark Mild 3.0% The lowest gravity beer at our festival. But

still one of the best Milds in Britain. Deservedly popular

B & T Shefford, Bedfordshire Black Squirrel 3.9% A rich dark beer with hints of blackcurrant and

chocolate in the flavour, leading to long fruity finish. The name is derived

from the new breed of squirrel seen in Bedfordshire in the last couple of

years.

Belleville Brewing, Jaggard Way, Wandsworth

**NEW BREWERY**CASK SAMPLE ONLY**** Thames Surfer 5.7% Only the Wandsworth Common festival organisers

could find you a brewery and a beer so NEW that no-one, no-one, has even

heard of it let alone tried it. We are indebted to Adrian Thomas for bringing

in a cask sample of his first brew at what will eventually be London’s latest

brewery (opens Jan 2013) A West Coast IPA style packed with hops.

Delivered “bright” and only 36 pints.

London Brownstone Ale 4.9% is planned at time of going to Press.

Possibly only available on Preview night. But ask at front desk.

Botanist, Kew Gardens, London **NEW BREWERY** 65 Mild 3.4% Good old fashioned mild. Almost died out in London this is a

rare re-birth of an almost lost tradition in the South at least. The name is

derived from the bus route that passes by the brewpub in Kew

OK Ale 4.2% An Oaky, nutty, malty, beer but well balanced bitter/malt.

The name is derived from the trade mark of the Botanical Gardens and in

fact the popular term “O.K” is derived from this Kew Garden trade mark.

391 Ale 4.0% Deep mahogany brown with dark fruit cake on the nose. Once

again the bus route passing the brewpub is the origin of the name.

Humulus Lupulus 3.8% Light orange brown in colour. Grapefruit and hint

of pineapple flavour. The name is derived from the latin name for hop plant.

See……you are actually learning something AND drinking!!

Nemo Phila 5.0% A Halloween special brew. Very dark bitter made with

black malts. Nemo Phila is the latin name for a popular plant often found in

graveyards.

Kew Green 5.2% Naturally cloudy with faint berry notes. Raspberry, cloves

and peppers can be detected.

Maximus 6.2% A deep red predominantly hoppy ale. Maximum hops as the

name suggests.

Box Steam Brewery, Rode Hill, Wiltshire Ghost Train 4.8% Full bodied, deep amber bitter with delicate blackcurrant

aroma. Slightly sweet finish with nutty aftertaste

Bradfield, Sheffield, South Yorkshire Yorkshire Farmer 4.0% A gold coloured brew. Light on the palate with a

smooth bitter finish.

Bristol Beer Factory, Ashton, Bristol Acer 3.8% Remarkable flavour from the Sorachi Ace hops. Feels stronger

than the 3.8% suggests. Tangerines and lemons.

Sunrise 4.4% Smooth premium golden ale. Very refreshing. One to have if

you have blown out earlier on a heavy stout.

Milk Stout 4.5% Creamy and full bodied a National Champion Stout

Brew No.7 4.5% Distinctive best bitter. Full bodied and very drinkable

Bitter Kiwi 5.0% New Zealand hopped bitter with tropical aromas and

flavour

West Coast Red 5.0% An American style hop led beer balanced with malts

to give a medium bodied beer.

Southville Hop 6.5% Blockbuster dry hopped IPA style. Amber in colour.

Uses the increasingly popular Centennial, Columbus and Simcoe hops. Big

and Strong.

Burton Bridge, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire Thomas Sykes 10% A full on barley wine. Deceptively easy drinking so be

careful. How can you leave the festival without trying at least a half of this

brewing blockbuster

Bushy’s Brewery Braddan, Isle of Man Helmsman 4.5% All the way from Manx a golden brown bitter light yet full

bodied with a light floral aroma. Brewed to celebrate Manxman John

Quilliam’s actions at the Battle of Trafalgar. Hard to find, unless of course,

you are currently tax exiled on the Isle.

Cromarty, Cromarty, Scotland. NEW BREWERY Hit the Lip 3.8% Summery beer with peach and pine aromas

Happy Chappy 4.1% New wave West coast American style bitter made

with both New Zealand and U.S. hops. Fresh and zingy.

Brewed Awakening 4.7% Rich and dark beer with six malts and real

espresso coffee from Arabica beans.

Red Rocker 5.0% A red rye based beer laced with American hops during

the boil but then dry hopped with American and New Zealand hops.

Dark Star, Horsham, West Sussex American Pale Ale 4.7% This was amongst the first of the new wave of

American style super hopped beers. A multi award winning beer and was

best in class and overall Bronze at this year’s Great British Beer Festival.

Winter Meltdown 5.0% Bronze coloured with chocolate and crystal malts.

Cask conditioned with Chinese stem ginger for a warming winter feel

Dark Star Festival 5.0% A chestnut, bronze coloured bitter with smooth

mouth feel. Gold medal winner at the 2012 Great British Beer festival in the

Strong Bitter Class. Must try.

Revelation 5.7% A blend of four hops Centennial, citra, cascade and

liberty. A mega hoppy brew. All the beers from Dark Star seem to have that

cutting edge feel. This is no exception.

Derventio, Darley Abbey, Derbyshire NEW BREWERY

King Arthur 4.3% Traditional brown bitter with sweet biscuit malt flavours

and a smooth balanced bitterness.

Dorset Brewery, Crossway, Dorset Jurassic 4.2% A medium bodied golden ale using Challenger and Mount

Hood hops providing a citrus aroma and clean sharp taste.

Downton Salisbury, Wiltshire Pumpkin Ale 4.2% A well hopped Autumnal ale with a nutty sweetness

and distinctive orange hue derived from the addition of fresh pumpkin.

Honey Blonde 4.3% Straw coloured beer with sweetened with a hint of

honey

Gooseberry Wheat 4.4% A 30% pale malt wheat is used to produce a

sprightly, refreshing flavour. The addition of Britain’s forgotten fruit, the

gooseberry, adds a sharp bite to the well balanced hoppiness. Buy more

gooseberries or this fruit will die out in the UK!!

Nelson Delight 4.5% Mellow amber with added rum making it rich and

sweet on the palate. Recommended. Celebrates Trafalgar Day October 21st

Dark Delight 5.5% A rare chance to sample an “Old Ale” a style of beer

fast disappearing. Must try a festival favourite.

Chocolate Orange 5.8% Consistently a festival crowd pleaser. Very

chocolately and very orangey. Must try.

Chimera IPA 6.8% This is the original strength IPA’s were sent out to

India before the modern day re-interpretation of the style as a mid gravity

session bitter. Strong and powerful. Excellent.

Roman Imperial Stout 9.0% This is Martin Strawbridge’s first Imperial

Stout and should be well worth a try. An abundance of chocolate and roasted

coffee flavours and aromas. Silky smooth, rich and powerful.

Elland Brewery, Elland, West Yorhshire Bargee 3.8% Full flavoured bitter with two malts and both English and

American hops

Exmoor, Wivelscombe, Somerset Beast 6.6% A rich porter with toffee, mocha coffee and chocolate aromas.

Fruitcake, rum and coffee on the palate

Wild Cat 4.4% Gold with hoppy citrus fruits. Initially sweet and lemony

but with bitterness showing through long finish

Fuller Smith & Turner, Chiswick London London Porter 5.4% Brewed from a blend of Brown, Crystal, and

Chocolate malts for a creamy delivery balanced by traditional Fuggles hops

Red Fox 4.3% An autumnal seasonal ale red in colour. Distinctive biscuit

notes. From London’s leading brewer.

Brewers No.2 Reserve 8.2% We are indebted to Derek Prentice of Fullers

for providing this unique one-off experimental beer available ONLY at this

festival . Brewed then stored for 2 years in an old cognac cask. As it says on

the festival banner. “Expect the unexpected”. Must try. If still available after

first day.

Fuzzy Duck, Fulton Le Flyde, Lancashire Mucky Duck 4.0% A dark stout, slightly sweet with roasted malts giving a

coffee and chocolate palate

Green Jack Brewery, Lowestoft, Suffolk Trawlerboys 4.6% Gold medal winner in Best Bitter class and overall Runner-up

Champion Beer of Britain 2012 at Great British Beer Festival. You simply must try to

find out what all the fuss is about.

Head in a Hat Brewery (The Florence) Herne Hill

London SE24 **NEW BREWERY** Titfer Dinner Ale 3.5% Beer historian Peter Haydon is using old London

beer recipes to fashion a revival of long lost styles of beer. This “dinner ale”

was designed to be drunk with the domestic family evening meal. Light and

refreshing the recipe dates from 1925 from a brewery in Camden.

Trilby XX Mild 4.0% Mild has virtually died out in London. Yet it was

once the predominant style. Basic mild was sold as “X”. This “XX” version

was the next step up.

Tommy IPA 4.2% It is a much repeated falsehood that IPA’s were brewed

extra strong for export to our troops stationed abroad. This 1914 recipe at

4.2% proves otherwise.

Topper 4.8% From a Barclay Perkins recipe dating from the Battle of

Trafalgar 1805 this is another export ale that is strong in hops but not

alcoholic strength. Indeed for its day it is on the weak side.

Hog’s Back, Tongham, Surrey Autumn Ale 4.0% A golden ale brewed with new season hops. A subtle

banana creeps in before bitter finish

R.I.Psnorter 5.0% Ripsnorther is a traditional strong English ale. Reddish

amber in colour. A Malty beer.

A over T 9.0% Fantastic barley wine style beer from our friends in

Tongham. Full bodied and tawny coloured. A malty aroma with hints of

vanilla. Hops eventually cut through the underlying sweetness.

Hoggleys Brewery, Litchborough, Northamptonshire Northants Bitter 4.0% A really beautiful, rich, golden beer. Made with

Fuggles and Northdown hops.

Hoggleys IPA 5.0 % A thirst quenching IPA, bitter with malty undertones

Houston, Renfrewshire, Scotland Braveheart 4.3% An exceptional Scottish Premium Ale with rich lingering

hoppy aroma. The Houston Brewery was Champion Best bitter in 2011.

Ilkley Brewery, Ilkley, West Yorkshire Ilkley Gold 3.9% A golden session ale with floral aromas derived from

Celeia and Cascade hops

Leeds Brewery Leeds, West Yorkshire Gathering Storm 4.4% A traditional stout A combination of dark roasted

malts and subtle hops giving a rich finish.

London Fields, Hackney E8 **NEW BREWERY** Pale Ale 3.7% A classic citrussy English Pale Ale but mixed with Galaxy

Tasmanian hops giving it a tropical fruit finish.

Hackney Hopster 4.2% Packed with New Zealand Motueka and Sauvin

hops giving grapefruit, lemon and gooseberry flavours. Superb.

Love Not War 4.2% First brewed last year as the brewers baracaded

themselves into the brewery during the riots outside. A red ale with caramel

and pear character.

JW Lees, Middleton Junction, Manchester Dragons Fire 4.0% An all malt ale with citrus aftertaste. Will pu a fire in

your belly.

Moonraker 6.5% Those of you who visited the recent Battersea festival

will remember this powerful very drinkable barley wine style beer from the

strong ales section in the corner of the Hall (where you would have seen me

propping up the bar). Deservedly popular. Was originally 7.5% but reduced

to avoid punitive tax on beers of 7.5 and over.

Magic Rock, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire **NEW** Hire Wire 5.5% A mighty USA style hop forward bitter from this new

brewery founded in 2011. Mango, lychee grapefruit flavours anchored to a

malt base.

Dark Arts 6.0% A four malt blend with bags and bags of whole hops.

Chocolate, blackberry and fig flavours. As we say…come over to the dark

side and expect the unexpected. Could be a festival favourite.

Moles, Melksham, Wiltshire Perle Anniversary Ale 4.6% Brewed to celebrate 30 years of brewing at

Moles using the Perle hop which is often used in German style beers. Gold

in colour with malty flavours, slightly floral aroma.

Mole Catcher 5.0% Copper coloured ale with spicy hop aroma and long

bitter finish.

Moorhouse, Burnley Lancashire Pendle Witch 5.1% Curiously this obvious Halloween pick is brewed all

the year round and not just October. Well balanced malty brew with long

complex and malty finish

Naylors Brewery Crosshills, West Yorkshire Merlins Revenge 4.3% Although this a predominantly a festival of dark

brews this is a very drinkable golden blonde ale from Naylor’s series of

mythically named beers.

New Plassey, Wrexham Clwyd, Wales

Dragon’s Breath 6.0% Strong full bodied tawny bitter. My kind of beer.

Must try.

Northumberland Brewery, Bedlington,

Northumberland Witches & Warlocks 4.0% Seasonal beer from brewery founded just 10

years ago but with ever growing reputation

Coffin Dodger 4.3% Very popular at last years Halloween festival

Orkney Brewery Quoyloo, Orkney Skull Splitter 8.5% A must try all the way from the Orkney Isles. Intense

malty, apple, prune and plum aromas. A long dry finish with a hint of nut.

Otley Brewery Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan O-1 Original. 4.0% The original Otley beer a straw coloured pale ale with

large amounts of styrian golding hops.

Phoenix Brewery of Heywood Lancashire Skellington 4.1% Pale coloured ale brewed only at Halloween

West Coast IPA 4.6% A heady waft of hops. Complex malty hoppy finish

Pot Belly Brewery, Kettering, Northamptonshire Pigs Do Fly 4.4% A light and golden ale from a brewery that has won over

30 awards since starting up in 2005.

Rebellion Marlow, Buckinghamshire Rebellion Mild 3.5% Dark with off white head. An old fashioned mild.

Strong on caramel without much bitterness as you would expect.

Saint Georges’s Brewery of Callow End, Worcester Red Dragon 3.9% Red in colour as the name suggests. Initially spicy but

with long lasting bitter finish.

Sambrook’s Batteresea, London Lavender Hill 4.5% A special limited edition from the boys from Battersea.

Infused with real honey for a sweetish finish.

Powerhouse Porter 4.9% My favourite of all the Sambrook’s beers. A dark

brown porterwith very pleasant roasted malt nose. The flavour is of

caramelised fruit. A delicious pint.

Sarah Hughes Brewery Sedgley, Dudley Sedgeley Surprise 5.0% Bitter sweet and medium bodied. Nice to have all

3 beers from Sarah Hughes for you to sample

Dark Ruby Mild 6.0% Regulars at this and other festivals will be aware of

this wonderfully eccentric extremely drinkable 6% mild . Brewed in an open

copper Victorian brewery. We actually sent a van all the way to Dudley to

collect this. Has acquired an almost mythical status as it’s either never

arrived or just run out. Don’t worry we have several firkins put by. Enjoy.

Snowflake 8.0% Snowflake is the ultra rare seasonal ale from the Beacon

Hotel in Sedgley. Has not ever been sold outside the homebrew pub except

at this festival. Barley wine style with a hint of coconut.

Shepherd Neame Faversham, Kent Late Red 4.2% Shep’s are the largest brewer by volume to be featured at

this festival of otherwise entirely micro breweries. But never under estimate

what great beers they can produce from their Faversham base in the heart of

English hop country. Copper red and very drinkable

Spooks 4.7% The favourite of all the Halloween themed beers at last years

festival. Only available for one month.

Bishops Finger 5.0% Originally supplied only in bottles in 1958. But for

some time now the flagship cask strong ale from this Kentish brewing

dynasty. Ruby coloured and mouth filling. Named after a signpost found on

the Pilgrims Way. Also known locally as Nun’s Delight or Ecclesiastical

Digit.

Gothic Ale A unique 6.0% beer made from 6 malts and its 6%. The result of

a collaboration with hosts Le Gothique and our sponsor Shepherd Neame.

The obvious “must try” of the festival. Available nowhere else. Will

possibly become a regular. Dark rich and complex. Beautiful.

Skinners Brewery Truro, Cornwall Cornish Scream 4.3% A spooky themed beer from the ever excellent

Skinners Brewery Copper coloured with smooth bittersweet finish.

Titanic Brewery Stoke on Trent Staffordshire Titanic Mild 3.5% A mild of classic stlye. Roast malt and delicately

balanced by hops. True to type it has a rounded sweetness & smooth dry

finish.

Captain Smith’s Strong Ale 5.2% Red/brown colour. Quite malty which is

welcome with so many super hopped ales around. Slightly sweetish honey

aftertaste.

Triple fff Four Marks, Hampshire Alton Pride 3.8% A golden brown full bodied session bitter with a hop

forward aroma and finish. A former Champion Beer of Britain (2008)

Twickenham Fine Ales Twickenham, London Naked Ladies 4.4% Well hopped with First gold and Styrian. Extremely

fine beer. Essential. Do try before it runs out. Deservedly popular.

Autumn Blaze 4.4% Russet amber ale with gentle spicy aroma. English and

German hops mixed with dark and crystal malts to give a full flavoured

Autumnal ale.

Strange Brew 4.1% A dark golden ale only brewed at this time of year.

Five different hops are used in this initially experimental brew which was so

popular last Halloween.

Entire Butt 6.4% A dark porter with treacle and liquorice notes and clean

hop finish.

Williams Brothers Kelliebank, Alloa, Clackmananshire William’s Black 4.2% A rich dark ale dominated by roasted malts. Coffee

and chocolate overtones. But can you discern the wonderful blackcurrant

aroma?

Windsor and Eton Windsor, Berkshire Canberra 4.0% Dark Malty brew for the autumn using maple syrup from

Canada and Australian and New Zealand hops. The third and final brew

completing Windsor & Etons “Jubilee Ales”

Eton Boatman 4.3% Fresh clean golden ale made with American citra and

Australian galaxy hops. The Dorney Lake rowing events at the Olympics

were less than a mile from the brewery.

Kohinoor 4.5% The second “Jubilee Ale” from Windsor & Eton. A pale ale

made using Jaggery sugar, Jasmine petals, coriander and cardamom from the

Far East. A must try from a respected brewer

WJ King Horsham West Sussex King’s Old Ale 4.5% Big tasting Old Ale with silky smooth mouth feel of

coffee and molasses This was our March 2012 Festival overall Champion

Beer of Wandsworth. We welcome its return for you all to savour once

again. Highly recommended.

Autumn Mist 4.1% Quintessentially autumnal. Lovely reddish brown hue.

Marris otter malts plus three Kentish hops. Wonderful.
